Its kinda funny how the Regent has proven to be such an advertisement for the Odyssey that way.
A lot of people earlier were commenting how the Regent looked like a 'bridging' class between Sov and Oddy. The pylons and nacelles do look like they come from the same 'design pattern'.

I was one of those people. Its a beautiful ship, I'd almost buy it on looks alone, but tactically I'm just not sure what to do with it that the space whale or the grandpa cruiser can't do better.
Indeed, the boff layout of an 'offensive cruiser' is, in terms of existing STO gameplay styles, geared towards the mainstream gamers like myself who wish to have a more tactically inclined cruiser. I will still continue to use Escorts and SVs for PvP, but the Regent is a great PvE ship.
The console and special torpedo type is not exactly worth the $25 bucks. The gas cloud while looking impressive, tends to prematurely detonate and lose its CC properties, making Eject Warp Plasma or Theta Radiation the choice for a reliable 'smokescreen' to slow mobs in STFs.
The traditional 'threat control' role is best done with a simple standard cruiser type. And oh, I couldn't slot Extend Shields or Eject Warp Plasma onto my Regent without making it kind of squishy or vulnerable to science powers.
So it is some sort of giant patrol escort.
Don't get me wrong, I love the APO + TT + TS + CRF spam, but a Patrol Escort of Doom (tm) is still far handier for most typical STO endgame scenarios that require offensive power, while the role of a resilent damage dealer is from observation, already covered by the Armitage.
Arguably the ability to launch fighters plus photon torpedo mega spread is much more effective than WA quantum and the metreon gas console. The Armitage doesn't need a wide angle launcher because it can just swing around fast to unleash a HY salvo out a rear tube at point blank range into a downed shield facing for great PvE pwnage. Double pwnage if the Armie was doing a strafing run with APB3.

I bought the Regent and, personally, I like it. I do wish that it came with another Tac Console slot, but then, you can't have everything in life. I believe it looks better with the traditional Sovy pylons, but if you try to equip them, you can't use the #6 material for the ship, which kinda sucks. I agree that it's not the killing machine that my MVAE is, but if you're a Cruiser fan like I am, the wide-angle torpedo launcher is very nice and is alone worth the price of the ship, IMO. The metron gas, meh. Not impressed with that, although I may get to like it better the more practice I get with it.

Basically my thoughts as well. Loved the wide arc torpedo, even though the damage seemed pretty miniscule compared to my normal quantums. The Metreon console was pretty much meh. I was not impressed with the damage that much and it seemed to be completely random on when it destroyed things even when they were unshielded. Compared to the damage it does to you in the Briar Patch, I think they missed the mark. Console slot wise though I think it's ok. Using 2 Field Gens my shields are over 12k per facing, and that's using a Mk X MACO(haven't been able to get the XI drop at all) and my hull is over 55k which is about the same as I get on the Oddy. Oddy I have better shields with a 3rd generator but I didn't notice any drop off in overall ship defensive performance due to this.
As for the ship I find it to have pretty solid survivability and better movement that the Oddy and I was doing much better DPS with it. I swapped out an EPTWs for an Aux. to Dampeners and Eject Warp Plasma for Emergency to Battery and was amazed at the difference that did for me. Now if I could just get my damn MACO shield that I've been grinding the last 3 weeks for, lol.
I started it off with the Aegis set, but after one mission I switched to the Borg Deflector, Borg Engines, Borg Console and the MACO XI Shield. This "Golden" set works quite well with my Red Matter Capacitor, EPTS, Sci Team & Eng Team.
I remember from the time the Excelsior was released up until early this year, players were complaining that the standard assault cruiser was a failsauce ship due to weak tactical boff options. Now there's a variant that resolves this issue and everyone is ungrateful.
10 consoles are an Oddysey, a fleet ship and lockbox ship only feature. Get those starbases to tier 5, kids. Then you'll get your uber Sovereign and you can move on to whining that it doesn't have five tac consoles like the fleet defiant.
People are still complaining as it?s still a weak layout which is not resolved. A strong layout would be Lt Commander Tac and Lieutenant Tac. But to get that you have to have a useless Ensign tac and no Sci. A strong layout would be turning the Universal to a fixed Lieutenant Tac. Or keep it Universal as Universal but change the ensign tac to ensign sci.
My only problem with the Regent is that mission BO dialogue pop ups ignore my Science officer because he's in the universal BO slot which is annoying.
Cryptic needs to wire that up so that the DOFF system "Department Heads" feature determines which officer fills which dialogs. I'm pretty sure they could do it without having to refactor any missions, just a code change.

Tough luck, nothing besides the Flagships and the Fleet ships get more than 9.
Most likely when you get to the Tier V shipyard Cryptic will have gotten around to putting a Fleet Assault Cruiser there.
