PvP etiquette?

mimey2mimey2 Member Posts: 0 Arc User
edited October 2012 in PvP Gameplay
I've starting doing some research, reading threads, etc around here. Maybe I missed it, but:

What's the etiquette, unwritten rules, and so on that is generally a part of PvP?

I'd like to learn of course, so when I get into it more, I won't be ticking anybody off, at least in my interactions with fellow PvPers.

Just doing my best to learn of course. :)
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

It's pretty much a dog-eat-dog world. If it's in the game engine, people can and will use (and abuse) it.

I personally find fireworks offensive. Both because they have no reason, second because it's meant to lag the opponent on slower machine.

Really no rules... Best advice is to step carefully for a while, cause we have some people in here who have a serious grasp on how STO/PvP works, and you may ruin your credibility by not listening to them :)

Or if you don't care about your credibility, just follow the few others down that path... :D

The real question is how good / polite a player do you want to be?

So far season 6 has been a blast the devs added some great bugs for us to play with so it's down to you as a player do decide if you want to use skills and abilities that you know are overpowered or just plain broken even if another player uses them on you.

Or at least try the "you AMS'd first noob rule"

Laws of honour (not specific to PVP and broken daily by maulers and battle packs)

1 thou shalt not spawn camp
2 thou shalt not turn about (take turns to lose)
3 thou shalt not rig matches or games
4 a member of your guild/clan/fleet on the other team Dies FIRST
5 if someone has to go to the bathroom do not shoot them while they are gone
6 Hiding in the scenery (glitch abuse) is cowardice
7 he who speaks the word PWNED must die by the hand of his own team for dishonouring his team
8 There is no greater dishonour than to team someone who calls for a fair fight.
9 if you are an organised team up against irregulars it is down to you to explain the codes before the battle
10 the winning side says "Good game" or "better luck next time" the losing team says "Well done"
if ANYONE says Owned , pwned , rolled , beasted etc the winners default

my rule is if you beat someone, do it honorably. no i win buttons, no bugged abilities, no cheap crippling doffs and PTW combos that put someone at an automatic disadvantage or takes away someones ability to fight back. are these things legitimate? sure, but its a mater of self respect, i wouldn't feel good or satisfied attaining a victory using such tactics.

i have mixed feelings on some of the things i use, but i can live with them, id be basically ineffective without them. the glider, buffed with flow cap consoles makes a big difference, at least when i use it im not using shield hp consoles so there is a trade off. the borg set is a cheap super heal, but everyone is using 1 of these sets or the other and your simply not in the same league without 1 of them.

i feel sort of bad loading up on snares, having EWP and TB on the same ship. who doesn't HATE being held like that. at least its a player doing it to you and not a thrice damned pet.

doffs really throw the game for a loop. distro doffs are simply insane in their full effectiveness, and other doffs remove the need to run multiple powers of the same type. they have also taken quite a few skills out of obscurity, for better or for worse. they are gear that is more important then what engine, deflector and shield you run now. i disprove of a lot of them, but being so widely available they simply raised the baseline, not using them is not an option.

I don't really mind TBs on a ship since there's opportunity costs and cooldowns. My only real beef is that the resists (especially AP:O) don't work nearly as well as they should.

Honestly I never thought about lag. For the future I will refrain from using it during battle unless all my power levels drop to 0. Than all bets are off.

And of course I might use it before/after the battle.

    1. As a pvper myself I can say I play to win!

    2. I pvp because I believe theres more challenge in other humans than in AI (pve)! That is why I also hate and only do grinding best items on pve missions for pvp.

    3. Im very interested in game mechanics and the most efficent ways to use those against other players!

    4. Im observing my own performance very seriously to become better! When I or my team fails I have to find out why!

    5. I respect all players which follow the mentioned points in a pvp match!

Yes it lags. On my previous computer (laptop) such stuff especially in solar map was unbearable. Truth is, back then there was not such horibble trash around in pvp as well. On new computers it probably does not matter, still I hate it when I see some stupid bug flying around doing fireworks all over the place.

Ah, thats why I saw that being used all the time in Ker'rat.

The most basic etiquette of PvP is no cheese (except in Ker'rat. Its the PvP moshpit)

I try to follow a simple maxim.

Don't be a jackwad to my opponents. This means I don't insult them, or belittle them without just cause. Now if the other guy starts it? I'll be more than happy to trade barbs. Or just save it to my Archive, so I can post it later and we can all get the last laugh.

If possible I try to help them improve if they want to learn from their mistakes, or even from my own.

I don't go out of my way to abuse game mechanics that are clearly not working as intended.

That being said, pretty much everything else is fair game for me.

If your gonna do 1v1 against another player, dont bring a full klingon energy drain build. Anyone can do that. Those who say spec against it know jack. Its the one thing no one can fight no matter how good you are.

Really, PvP ettiquette is pretty straightforward. I find it important to keep a sense of humor about it; no matter how good your ship is, you won't always win, and it's better to laugh or shrug it off than get upset. (And if you do get upset, no yelling in zone chat.)

The PvP queues are usually more structured, but all bets are off in Ker'rat.

i can only think of 1 person who obnoxiously uses fireworks constantly, otherwise they are almost only used after someone gets a kill, so.... the lag you get from them wouldn't mater at that point

When you'll be ready for Ker'rat I strongly recommend you...don't vaporize the enemies that aren't at your level and don't try to finish an opponent already hit hard and close to being destroyed...it's a bully behavior that won't help you when facing opponents stronger than you.
However, despite your honorable behavior, you will always have to fight at Ker'rat against the terrific KDF targ packs! Be prepared for the worst...:P

About the only time I 'bully' someone like that is when the Feds outnumber the KDF and are all grouped together. As I PvP using a hit-and-run BoP, it's often pointless to try doing a run at 'em, as I'll likely get snared and blown to hell before I can actually kill the target (unless I manage to kill in a single run). At that point, I just pick off PvEing stragglers because I'm bored, and need to pass the time to wait out the grouped-up feddies :P

Oh, and occasionally I'll say something like 'BOOM' or whatever, if I pull of a particularly effective surprise attack from the aft quarter. IMO, nothing feels better than swooping in suddenly and wiping someone out with a single attack run.
My PvP toon is Krov, of The House of Snoo. Beware of my Hegh'ta of doom.

This is true. I remember my last space pvp arena had 2 heavy escort carriers and 3 atrox carriers in it. I was watching a slideshow of my ship blowing up. While in ESD where people blow off fireworks all the time, I don't notice any slowdown more than the usual.

    Anyways, my personal rules are:

    1. Be polite. If it was a good match, say so. If you stomped someone 30-0, it wasn't a good match and saying "gg" only makes you look like a prick.
    2. No exploits.
    3. No stupidly broken weapons/abilities. (I'm looking at you, hyper compressed cryo launcher)
    4. Always help those who ask for it.

I'd say this: be proud, but be curteous. Queues are usually not bad from etiquette point of view. But Kerrat runs by different rules. In Kerrat, I usually try to kill whoever brags more or is the noisiest. Other than you publicly embarrass those people and they suddenly become quiet, it adds a very nice flavor to the game. And usually those people die easy. Whatever you do, play to win. Equip whatever works as intended (this means do not equip a shield like Jem shield used to be a while ago while bugged and healed through distrib doffs, or maco was, or siphon drones, or whatever other things). If you are part of a premade, then obviously the rules are set before, otherwise, make your own rules, with respect of the above.
