Why can't Caitians be barefoot?

velktravelktra Member Posts: 0 Arc User
If you think about it, a Caitian is just a big cat, and cats don't like to have things on their feet. It interferes with how they feel the ground and can throw off their balance (and make them generally go crazy).

While some Caitians might prefer boots (to protect their paw pads from cold, heat, or sharp objects, it would be nice to have an option to not wear boots at all. It would make sense that Starfleet would give them the option; in the animated series, M'ress didn't wear shoes.

Besides, Gorn can be barefoot. :P

    I agree.

It would be nice to have a barefoot option for Caitians - M'Ress was 'barefoot' :D

Oh, and speaking of M'Ress, when are we going to get her hairstyle for Caitians as well? :)

YES. That too, full manes for Caitians! The current styles are cute, but not what I really wanted for my Caitian.

More fur patterns would be nice too. Spots and stripes for leopard and tiger style Caitians (unless they're there and I missed them).

This thread reminds me of the one Star Trek movie where Chekhov is jumping to conclusions about a certain crew member being a culprit to a crime based on the size of his shoes. Another person has to point out that this crewmember has freakishly gigantic lizard-like bare feet that couldn't possibly wear those boots.

That's because Gorn don't track kitty litter all over the ship when they go barefoot; also, Gorn physiology, in general, contributes to their ability to go barefoot much more than soft pads. Think about it; if they're resistant to, say, being hit by large rocks, they probably don't care about walking on surfaces or objects a cat would avoid.

im not against bare feet option but remember monkeys and lizards probably dont want to wear shoes either but numerous species, like the xindi, humans, cardassians etc have evolved from them and they all wear shoes.

caitians are also dont walk on all 4 feet so we dont know how they would feel about shoes. hundreds of thousands of years of being bipedal will change they way you walk, compared to how their primate ancestors did.

and besides have not technically even evolved from cats. they have evolved from some alien creature that just happens to look like a cat. who knows what they feet look like, or how they work.

ST:TAS, M'ress didn't wear shoes, but also had digitgrade feet.

Although from a two year old dev post:
When deciding to make the STO Caitians plantigrade or digigrade ("flat-foot" or "on-toes") we decided to go with plantigrade, the "flat-foot" option.

We took a look at what would give players the most compatibility with currently available costume options and decided that most players would want to use as many of the different Uniform pants and boots as possible, so the flat-foot plantigrade was the best option.

Plus, we were slightly torn between the Animated Series Caitians, and the ones portrayed in the TOS Films. Since the films established some canon for Caitians to be plantigrade, and plantigrade offered the most compatibility with customizations, that's what we went with.

Now, there is a possibility of adding some "bare feet" options in the future (similar to how the Gorn can have bare feet), but it's not currently in development.

It's obviously because of Starfleet's health & safety policy.
I mean, what would happen if a caitian trod on a drawing pin dropped at the academy?

I would love for my caitian and my ferasan to both be barefoot. But then again i would also like them to wear kilts to more easily deal with their tails.

Well, there you go. Since STO Caitians are flat-footed like humans, no reason why they shouldn't wear boots. I don't see Cryptic wanting to revisit that decision, especially with every other little thing on their plates.

I'm all for the idea of Caitian (and Ferasan) manes. For more hair and costume options in general for everybody. But not so much for M'ress long-hair, which would probably wind up looking pretty bad in-game.

The lizard and cat people in Morrowind were well designed, but sadly they were changed in the sequels into humans with a funny head.

That is my problem with the animal-like races in STO. They are no more than humans with a different head. Understandable for a TV shows that dates back to the time computer animation didn't exist. However the game could be much richer on this part.

I would certainly buy an exotic race, but not the cats in this game. They just look cheap. (and they are, by sticking to the human body, animations and clothes are the same)

Just because they look like cats doesn't mean they are cats. That's a pretty feeble argument for why caitians should be barefoot.

Besides, I've seen animals wear socks and little booties (including several cats) and their balance and awareness of their surroundings was unaffected.

One or 2 were background pieces in Starfleet groups, as well as many other of the rarer races.

It's generally accepted that the Caitians are a felinoid species, meaning that they're cats. Even in game they're feline (evidence is name of hairstyles).

And some animals don't mind booties once they get used to them. Others won't tolerate them at all.

First, I'm not a furry. I just think it'd be more logical to allow Caitians the choice of wearing boots or not since they're more "animal" than humanoid.

Second, you don't have to like it. :P

While I can understand the desire, the concept of footwear is a practical matter. These are bipedal felines, so they would have similar pressure on the feet as humans would.

Also the boots are armor, and more than that, how would they handle situations requiring pressure suits without footwear?

I'd just like the barefoot option across the board. Dunno why we have to make options for specific species/races to the exclusion of others.

    I call Desu Syndrome.
I suppose Aliens, Gorn, Ferasans, and Caitians can use that option in all outfits. Default races need it in an Off Duty thing.

When Catians can not only be barefoot but also have more hairstyles including the M'ress mane style I will pay for the species unlock.

Until such time, My money remains mine.
