Humble, mostly PvE'er says thanks to PvP'ers.

I consider myself a good enough player, enough to get through what needs to be done, and even PvP, on an ok level.

I've never been a big fan of it in other MMOs I've played. Mostly because of the 'nightmare tales' I've heard of such extreme elitists believing themselves to be the 'god of the game', and so on. I know there are those types here in this game, but they are much, much fewer compared to others.

Why the 'thank you'? I don't mean it in a sarcastic or mean way. I want to thank you for not giving me the Star Trek equal of getting TB'ed, tossing around the word 'nub' and 'noob' like it was going out of style, to those PvPers out there who are still on my friends list, thanks for staying on there still, and well...thanks for killing me.

Because at least for me, killing or getting killed, regardless of anything else, is an actual fun and enjoyable experience in this game, in the rare times when I do PvP.

So, thanks for reading this, and may I provide you fun (but not necessarily easy), kills in the future. :D
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

thanks for being just as anti obnoxious, not saying we are a bunch of cheaters. no one around here thinks their the best player there is, the closest thing would be a group of players that think they are the best when they are teamed up, and they are more or less right.

i do very well in pvp, and feel bad for those that obviously are struggling. i wish i had half an hour for each of them i encounter to fill them in on everything they need to know to be competitive. thats why we have help threads here, for those that want to learn and get better, we have the information on what works.

    Thanks for staying around.

And thanks for showing a willingness to improve.

Thanks also for not being a total piece of garbage attitude wise.

Positive minded pvpers are typically the most dangerous. These are the ones I have my eyes on, because they are the ones that step back and say "hmmm, what am I going to do with that situation next time..".

I think the curve is pretty steep in STO, partly because the PvE game doesn't threaten you in any way and never punishes bad choices. To new players, getting instagibbed or seeing people in tiny ships flying like they're indestructible can seem like magic, because the difference between someone who just hit their first 50 in a Tactical cruiser and someone who's spent over two years min-maxing and bleeding dry every last bit of performance from their character is mind-boggling. It's not really well-designed on Cryptic's part but what're you gonna do.

There's some dude out there in the KDF that has profiles on many PVPers out there, telling what tendencies certain players do.

"Oh, that's ____, watch for this, he tends to do this when ___." On and on. It's cool but kind of freaky at the same time

You're welcome. Allow me to extend my gratitude as well.

PvP is the thing that actually kept the game interesting for me and is the thing that actually requires some skill to do (the rest is just mindless grinding, save some organized STF runs).

I really like the mindset of the OP. I can't count the number of players that i have encountered across various games that think "I lost to him, therefore he mush cheat". In fact the more you get blown up the more you should think: "Ah, he beat me... why? What is better - DPS, Boff skills, Ship, Player skill? How do I make up for that?" and after figuring out these questions to eventually improve.

Also thank you for all the Ship build threads that helped me understand how everything in the game works: from abilities, cooldowns, counters, power settings and many many other things that the average PvE player doesn't know.

Now if only we got a nice little PvP system for more players to play...

Yeah no kidding, if I get killed extremely fast regardless of what I do, there's something I didn't do right, and/or the players were just that good. It is just a game, if I get better in general by going into PvP more, all the better I think.

    Glad not to be. :)

I wouldn't complain about pointers, tips, advice, etc. I plan on, when I have more time, to read some of those very threads.

Don't worry there, I doubt I'll be soloing whole groups of PvPers any time soon.

I agree completely. That is so true, and it is something I realize each time I PvP.

But I can really go for wanting to get the most out of your ship and such, it's a little insane the amount of specific effort some go through, the same amount I might not do, but I will say I do like the dedication, to me, that really shows their passion and enjoyment for it, so all the more power to em.

Whoa...that is kind of freaky, nearly on the creepy level almost. Interesting, in a psychological way though.

Thank you for that offer, I've heard much about the Sad Pandas, I can guess the Panda Cubs is a child-fleet of them? However, I do have a fleet on both sides, so I will politely decline your offer, but I will keep it in mind should things change in the future. I hope you understand of course.

It's a mindset I hope I can keep as well. I realized recently I'd kept a very closed mind about PvP in this game, which wasn't fair to those who did it.

Well, thanks for the replies folks. I just have, as pretty much a starting PvPer, one REALLY big question has bugged me for awhile:

Could someone explain a lot of the terminology ya'll use? Like I see things such as 'Instagibbed', and 'minmaxing', etc. I know a lot of the abbreviations, such as EPtS1 is "Emergency Power to Shields 1", but much of the other terms I see are going over my head.

I am perfectly willing to learn of course, as long as folks are willing to teach. I'll be looking at threads in my spare time, thinking about my builds, and asking specific questions on those threads.

Any advice will be highly appreciated if you wish to give it.

Oh, my bad, I apologize, I come from a heavy PvP background and those aren't specifically STO terms. "Instagibbed" is when you die to extremely high burst anywhere from within a few seconds to half a minute (in STO they tend to say he or she "popped"). Min-maxing is where you put on your giant nerd cap and test hard numbers, compare items/builds/tactics, use log parsers, etc. to get the highest possible desirable performance and the lowest possible undesirable performance from your character. It's kind of like trying to find out what the absolute limits of the game engine are.

It's worth remembering that in STO, there's no penalty for losing (in fact you still get a tiny lil bit of gil as a remuneration). There's always something you can learn from a death or a defeat, and the more you know about these situations, the faster you'll get better. You can also just straight up ask someone what it is they're doing, since most people take pride in their builds and are flattered if people ask about them.

Sad Panda Cubs isnt about joining a fleet. Its also a chat channel in game where you will get advice on whatever PVP related question you have without being made to feel like a noob. Also, its not just the Sad Pandas who help.

In summary, a safe zone for getting PvP help.

Good attitude! Now, if only 10% from pveers would be like you... After you'll have a bit of experience, you'll see that the people that are the most verbally aggressive go down first. Because instead of investing their energy in making a good build and spec, keeping an open mind on advices, they use that energy to talk trash. When you see that happening, make that player your main target. They are the easiest to kill.

I really should make a thread for it. (I also try to explain some of our more common bridge officer ability abbreviations in each of my build posts, before using the short hand again)

Instagibbed : most of us come pretty heavily from various gaming backgrounds. Instagibb, refers most usually to near instantaneous kill, or an instantaneous reduction in defenses that is so hard to deal with that you're effective presence on the battlefield is 0.

Nil : Often refers to Totally Non Effective Status.

Minmaxing: Most of us are die hard min maxers, we pour over our ship stats, our captain abilities, to maximize our advantages and minimize as much as possible our weaknesses.

Faceroller: A derogatory that a large portion of us now use, to describe people with poor attitudes and severe lack of skill.

/Faceroll: the fictitious command that means nil effort on the part of the person typing it. Most often used to describe pve, or being in a team of solid pvpers, against a poor attitude equipped losing team.

Faceroll: Itself, is the act of putting your face on the keyboard and rolling it around to fire off abilities thus why we use it to describe either minimum effort or to describe someone incapable of putting up real effort or making us put up real effort when they would rather blame us or the game for their shortcomings. For example:
    fij ds k ol
    [w er
    ok jli jko ;f.;/'
    b g d
    aw fir o[j; !! !!
    ____________

Hax: This used to be an insult that sore losers would throw around they still do really. It was an accusation that we are using some kind of special program to make our ships better etc. Or an accusation of exploiting. Most of opvp at this point has taken it as a compliment now, or as a joke. You'll find it in almost any mundane conversation we have in the channel at this point, for example. "Bacon is hax"

Haxcellent: Our endearing replacement for excellent.

fuklulz: (with the C before the k of course) something so stupid, that it's hilarious.
