I see nothing wrong with people trying to tank in PvE. The general gist - you need to bring enough damage to draw aggro, but have enough healing to survive it is prefectly sound in PvE. It doesn't work in PvP, because you can't artificially generate aggro against players.

But this still wouldn't lead to squishies in PvP, since these people build ships too last against damage. UNless you think the low DPS of NPCs tends to lead them to err too much on DPS abilities instead of survival abilities? That may be an issue.

But a Tac in a Cruiser is not necessarily squishy. As long a he outfits his ships with the usual healing stuff. If he tries to make it a pure DPS ship ,sure then he'll run into survival issues in PvP. But he'd also do so in STFs.

Artificially generated aggro? No, he used the normal/natural human emotional response system.

You can probably also generate aggro if you get into a Pvp match and scream "I'm invincible". :p

Or say (and I quote) "All Klingons wear ladies underwear"

That guy drew fire from three battle cruisers instantly

Well, whether there was intent behind it or not. Maybe I should avoided the word use - "In sophlogimo's case, it was just the natural human emotional response system".

nothing generates pvp threat like a tac/excelsior. if i don't have 3 escorts shooting at me at all times, its because i killed one or chased them off. i don't know why but it always seems to be those nova core guys that gun for me, then insult me and block my before i can even say youmadbro.

like this from tonight, basically said all you do is run. i reply well if i only run why are my damage numbers so high? and then something about im not speaking English, and then this

(my character in this match is kayla)

as much as some forum posters make me want to place my face into my palm, i would gladly take them over the hyper aggressive 'you have no life, get over yourself' mad as hell crazys that feel the need to pm me. if you feel the need to be this aggressive in a chat box with a stranger, i think its you that have the self esteem problem...

er, news to me? bro im not even there :P. no worries tho.

but yes, in regards to that 'artificially generated agro' comment that does seem to be an issue there. that and there tends to be a greying of lines in regards to ground vs space tanking.

im under the assumption though, that a new player would misread something like that and spread said knowledge to who knows else. Mostly, I figure its good for pvpers to post elsewhere aside from the pvp forums, spreads the word of 'truth'. there's a lot of threads out there, some requiring the math and hard numbers and other helpful information that the pvp forums seems to have. to quote dontdrunkimshoot's post in that thread:
you really haven't seen that? thats been posted 10 different places in the pvp forum alone. the perfect guide when ever you feel the urge to respec.

if you like that, all you would be damage dealers would love this.

we have tons of useful information, some with a little more math for my tastes, but definitly someone would find it beneficial, they would use it and then the overall playerbase would have increased by that much in skill and knowledge (however small that percentage might be). a better understanding of individual mechanics, leads to a better understanding of team mechanics and at some point perhaps a love of team play rather than a view that it is 'hax' or 'op' or just not fun at all.

why not give it to them rather than waste our collective time on so many 'overdone' threads here... makes things stagnant imho, and then people get catty for lack of a better term :). we can do better, especially as supposedly one of the more vocal forum groups in sto. ^_^

edit: the prime example being used wasnt a tac in a cruiser, rather a tac in a carrier, im thinking it's the atrox and not the armitage, not too sure how much of a diff that would make though

But then you will never know how much more awesome a build can be if you base it off of obscure soft-canon sources and self-imposed RP rather than actual game mechanics!
