I'm asking this, because lately I've seen a lot of what appears to be Mogai Escort captains in PvP.

You know, flying their cruiser or escort at a constant 1/4 impulse with low engine power, wile trying to circle around you/away from you. It's becomeing a habit for me, when my BoP is on the tail of another ship, to continously click my mouse-thumb-buttons to vary speed between 1/4 and 0, in order not to overtake my target. It's not even like they try to reverse to make me overtake them... it's just a constant low speed...

I always thought it useful to keep the speed up... at least some power to engines (especially in an escort) and never less than 1/2 impulse when someone is shooting at me.

Am I missing some secret? Is flying slow the new OP/FoTM?

Mogai Escorts actually use Evasive Maneuvers and Tactical Team. They seem hopelessly OP to what you describe. (They still aren't good, they are incapable of bringing their front cannons to bear thanks to their maneuvering. But at least it' s something)

9 out of 10 times I switch between 1/4 impulse and reverse ...

I don't think you are missing anything. My carrier has 70% defense when on full engine power. I rarely want to give that up, although sometimes I must.

It could be, though, that the plane-like turnrates of escorts go on the nerves of these people (like they did go on my nerves when I tried them so many times), and that is their way to work around it?

So your bonus defense is lower then 70 on lowest engine speed? Sucks for you, did you forgot the elusive trait or proper speccing into Warpcore efficiency/potential/engines? :p

yeah, they fire all their abilities the moment they spot you, and then spend the rest of the fight trying to fit into your shuttlebay. And they're having cannon issues because they're trying to broadside you... :p

    CLICK ALL THE BUTTONS!
    NO! NOT ABANDON SHIP!
KABOOM! (before abandon ship is resolved)

By trundling along at a crawl, you force a trailing escort to trundle along at a crawl to keep you in their cannon arc which doesn't do anything nice to their defense value, or to have to make strafing runs which leaves gaps in their big hits. It is a double edged sword however since you're own defense value drops, but cruisers can usually handle it a bit better. Usually.

Doesn't look like it's working though... and if I get flanked by another escort when trailing a snail, i just switch to following the escorts tail. But as I said in the OP... sometimes the snail i'm trailing IS the escort... :/

Yeah, but by being close it's easier to move outside of your cannon arc with lateral movement, because the width of your cone is much smaller close to you than it is far away, so aside from leaving you vulnerable to their wingman, they make it easier to break your targeting and the speed means they can bring their turning circle closer to yours. Also, it's easier to drop plasma on you in those situations.

Speed is very important... defense is derived from speed... however understanding the numbers allows you to play with in the rules. Escorts have the lowest inertia numbers and bleeding defense numbers for a few seconds here and there is not always life threatening.

hmm... maybe it works on fresh escort pilots... I learned long ago to lean ahead when running tight or fast circles. And keeping the cannons firing is much more difficult against someone going fast in circles than slow. As for EWP... It rarely bothers me, as I have APO.
