    Good interview.
Odd interviewee. People don't play the KDF because there isn't nearly enough attention given to them. Would ANYONE play an ignored faction of an MMO? It doesn't make sense to.

It's chicken-and-egg. Do few play KDF because of the lack of content, or is there a lack of content because few play it? (And let's not get into the history, because to be honest it's immaterial right now.)

Cryptic's problem is if they devote significant resources to KDF and it DOESN'T really increase the # of folks playing KDF, then they've diverted resources away from things the vast majority of players spend time on. I'm not saying that's the right call or the wrong call, but like any company Cryptic has to allocate its resources carefully. I personally would prefer to see a fleshed-out KDF, but if Cryptic feels there's more bang-for-the-buck from doing faction-neutral stuff, I can understand the thinking.

The need for faction nuetral stuff relies more on the fact that most players are at levelcap and need something to keep them playing as oppossed to what faction they play in.
Or at least thats the gist of his statement as I got it.
Which is kinda funny since a few months back the reasoning behind the lack of KDF resources was becuase most players where in the mid levels of the game........
Of course if endgame is finalized and set in place it would nice if the Devs could start on finishing the KDF and possibly starting the RSE.

Ambassador class tied to a story? wasn't the storyline of STO killed recently... >.>

And yes that is a not so thinly veiled expression of disgust over the loss of episode missions. Just for those who couldn't tell :)

    here is the story....

“Captain, there is a subspace rift opening in front of us.... Sir, I am picking something up on sensors coming through the rift.”

    “What is it?”

“It appears to be a small cube.”

    “A cube? What is inside?”

“Unknown. Our sensors can not penetrate the outer shell. But there is some writing on the side.
    ”
    “What does it say?”

“To open insert Master Key. Keys now available in the C-Store. Grand Prize: An Ambassador Class Starship. Odds of winning: Not disclosed.”

“My god, there is a starship in there!! We have to free it. RED ALERT! Raise Shields and Load my credit cards into the torpedo launchers . Stand by with large amounts of $50 bills. Crew, this could get rough!”

… the loses were horrible that day. Our Intrepid and clueless Captain lost everything. His bank account was depleted and he was forced to sell his starship and file for bankruptcy.

Wow! During my few months of hanging around in STO, the KDF fans made it sound like there are millions of them. dStahl revealed that the population number for KDF is a whole lot smaller. As a result of the faction luring a small population, the KDF side of the game is not a money maker. Now we know why there is a problem with PvP. Since the KDF population is very low, 50% of the PvP games are stuck in neutral.

    Very interesting interview.

Cryptic is beefing up what is bring in the revenue, so that they can continue to give us more content.

    Nothing wrong with that approach.

Very good points. If I am listening to his interview correctly, dStahl mentioned that there is just a lack of interest. Majority of the players prefer playing Federation characters than KDF characters. As dStahl had also mentioned -- If the KDF faction does pick up a good seized population, Cryptic will go back an flesh out its lower levels. Until the faction starts to pick up steam, Cryptic will focus on neutral endgame content.

    Very smart move.

there, i fixed that for you...

And I am not bemoaning them to make a profit. However, I have yet to see any relation of more money = more content in the game. But I am willing wait and see what they come out with for Season 6. I am hoping they will knock my socks off. But right now, I am not see it.

Revenue does not turn into profit until all the expenses are paid. If Cryptic was making a substantial profit, they would have no problem with beefing up the KDF faction. Cryptic is trying to boost the revenue generating content, so that at some point they will be able to make a generous profit.

dStahl revealed that KDF was not generating enough revenue; thus, the content for the faction will be held off until the future.

Again, I see nothing wrong with his thinking.

If by content, you are referring to "storyline missions" then you're waiting for Season 7 (due before the end of th year). Season 6 is going to be more "systems" stuff (Fleet mechanics, Starbases, PvP, etc.).

Stahl seems like a nice guy with a good head on his shoulders and a good sense of humor.

I like that he clearly is responsive to feedback and has a clear vision for the game.

I like that he is resolved to always 'under promise and over deliver' going forward.

I like that he has hired someone to do nothing but tag foundry assets and that he clearly understands the foundry's potential.

Putting the KDF issue to rest (aka stop beating a dead targ)

I think KDF players need to be a bit more realistic in their expectations. Only 16% of STO players play KDF. That number would likely be a bit higher if the faction were 'complete' but given what we know about Trek fans at conventions, at others games etc. the nature of the IP is that overwhelming majority of players will prefer Federation.

BESIDES, 90% of STO players are at endgame. You can't seriously suggest that they go back and create missions starting at lvl 1 for KDF. Rough parity and faction neutral content going forward is the best that KDF fans can hope for. He has laid his cards on the table and been very candid.

Good Idea with releasing some ships in future only in SB shipyard. People will need invest in building SB , so sinking dilithium there. Not changing too much for C-points. People will need to buy some C-points for real cash :) Clever idea ;)

After listening, I have begun to think that the devs are thinking something similar to what Adm. Lance Cartwright thought of us during the praxis incident:

The Klingons are the "alien trash of the galaxy".

I for one am insulted. We should be respected by them, yet we get the same cut-and-paste excuse about "low playerbase" and "too many at max level" that they have always said in prevoius interviews.

But I will not let this deter me. I will still continue to call for KDF content!

    Qapla'!

the problem with kdf is that u start half done whats the point ??? to fair u should of had the choices at the start if u want to be kdf or fed not u must play fed then half way u can now change whats the point u allready done half the work and mission on fed so people will just stay there till lvl cap and nothing els to do due to lack of content so they then play a lvl 20 kdf toon till cap lvl then 1 leave 2 restart a toon 3 wast time just sitting around chatting ( due to lack of content)

the second most problem with the kdf if its a mess

New site doesn't have that nice little drag an start timeline. Guess I'll have to download it so I can skip through the first half (chatter and info I don't care about) to get to the good stuff (Dstahl) or is it still possible to drag an start on this new site?

Read some posts at the end of the topic noticed kdf mentioned that dan thinks its not popular cos no ones playing em. Even tho i never thought of playing kdf because i was waiting till it was more on par with content i.e missions and ships etc and then i would devote time to it. That didnt happen but i tried kdf anyhow and loved the gurumba and said fo to the fed side, only on fed side now cos i have a jem ship and wana use it for a bit, when ive got it nice and done some stfs ill probs go back to my beloved gurumba and stay there.

Them comments about kdf make me not want to bother listening to the interview as all i think ill hear is chicken and egg TRIBBLE (u made the mess cryptic fix it and ull get the ppl on i guarantee it. Oh and funny how almost anywhere in sector space theres a about half the ships are klingon and in stfs about half are kdf. Strange that isnt it for such a low playerbase...

I bet the rest of the interview was "in the future" "a we would like" and all that rubbish.

I know its a rant, its meant to be a rant but sry heard it once heard it a thousand times. I hope one day this will change and interviews are worth a dam like they used to be on stoked back when it was not f2p.

Edit - Actually.. Cryptic just merge the factions because lets face it factions don't have any gameplay that needs factions. Just merge the missions and drop the ones that doesn't make sense anymore. Let ppl play any species they like any ship they like and have everything from now on species neutral so doesn't matter what ship or what toon ur playing the story would make sence regardless. Do this and then we wouldn't need any other faction stuff i.e separating the player base, it will be all one global faction where any thing goes. Just my opinion of course but man it would removal all this faction TRIBBLE and would let ppl have any ship they like and let u give any ship to the players without it needing to be rare etc

As for the interview, I found it very informative. Unfortunately, it does not look like there will be any reason for me to put much effort into STO until season 7.

I too am getting an error, but after reading some posts here do I really want to see it? Um I think no. Obviously you Cryptic guys are biassed against the Klingon faction. Reason a lot of people (your words) aren't playing is because we have only 9 missions, the rest are crappy Federation ones. Yes only 9 and the Federation has what, 70?

Produce the content for the KDF and you'll get the players, the money coming in and a happier fan-base. There is basically nothing in the C-store for KDF, one uniform, a handful of ships and that's about it. How can you make money off them if you produce nothing for them. Sounds like a lame excuse to me. You guys are really starting to sound like politicians, you make promises and never keep them, say it's this way and ignore the problem rather than deal with it. I have no interest in anything you do until you do the right thing with the KDF, season 6 is a waste of time and money.
