No, really! Discovered it in Ker'rat while trying to figure out why I kept getting Husank's plasma torp fires put out almost automatically (in fact it was Husank that noticed it, I just thought plasma was supposed to go out after two seconds or so). Turns out, any time the Borg Secondary Shields activate it, hazards on your are wiped.
In fact. sometimes I think the game would be more fun without all those "sets".
Finally, something upon which we can agree! lol
Seriously though, the sets are gimmicks released with little thought towards balance (like just about anything else). Even the "nerf" to the Borg set some time ago actually made it stronger, just as the "nerf" to ablative armor made it that much more powerful. Stuff that looks good on paper doesn't translate well if they don't consider the effects across the greater game.
AFKers at the spawn point can last 10-15 seconds and score decent healing just by equipping the Borg set, lol. Sets won't make awful players great, but they do put anyone without them at a disadvantage against equally skilled players. There was a time when equipment didn't really matter all that much. The C-store and free to play are changing that though.

Too bad the current normal gear is not effective enough in most cases to go up against the Special sets.
But i still like how we can mix and match sets with the bonusses etc. I just wish there were alot of more of them.
It would be interesting to see stand alone pieces get some kind of boost that could, potentially, compensate for giving up a set ability.
I also wonder what we'd see if each set had a console as a fourth piece (like the Borg Set). Being able to mix and match multiple sets AND get extra powers would probably get out of control pretty quickly:(.
sets, and combination of sets is a classic part of any MMO game, u have a lot of variety for builds, is a good adition to this game.
The problem here is that the are only a few sets, and nothing can compete with the borg set healings.

So true. Now you have all these cool DOFF assignments that can make you Very Rare Deflectors and Impulse Engines and Shield Arrays. And what can you do with them? Sell them as trash to the vendors, because no one ever needs them. Sets is where it's at. It's really lame.
But Cryptic/dstahl in their infinite wisdom decided that it would be a good idea to make sets very rare items in power with extra abilities. Cryptic's forte itemization is not.

That's an idea... A new class of item.. INDIGO or something, that has an extra trait (ie. 4) rolled on a special table with VERY nice perks.... basically like getting a set without the set.
Only 1 Indigo item equippable on a ship normally.
2 Indigo equipable after a starship upgrade is applied via starbase project.
3 Indigo after a very high level project
Where to get these? Random drops, small chance when doing DoFF equipment missions. (which, btw, should scale up to MK XII)
The idea of sets is cool and all but in most MMOs the bonuses they provide are minor.
3 seconds longer on this skill... 3 seconds shorter on this cool down ect...
Cryptic has went out and plain added more abilities to them and seriously OP procs.
I use a borg set like everyone else... you have to and that's sort of the problem.
3 piece maco 3 piece omega ? whats that.... oh have to drop my free 0-100 hull heal no thanks.
Yes I did notice last night that the shield proc from the borg seems to wipe dots... I was wondering why my dots wouldn't stick on a handful of people... despide them not having hazards. Turns out that full borg set has some very nice advantages. lol
Its to late now I know but the sets honesty should never have added ... free abilities like borg heals and tet glider... they should have added SMALL passive bonuses to cool downs or skill durations. (as other MMO devs have done) By that I mean....
Borg set...
2 piece (reduce cool down of (Go Down Fighting or RSF or Dampening Field) by 15 seconds
3 Piece (increase up time of (Go Down Fighting or RSF or Dampening Field) by 15 seconds.
Omega set
2 Piece (reduce cool down of (Attack Pattern Alpha or EPS transfer or Sub Nuke) by 15 seconds
3 Piece... increase up time by 15 seconds... (duration modifier for Sub nuke)
Maco and KHG.... could effect the team fleet abilities in the same way. (being the team STF klink fed team up sets)
Ect Ect...
Jem Set... hmmm they seemed to have fast rammy type ships... why not a 2 piece boost to evasive... and a 3 piece boost (with added kinetic resist to ram, perhaps allow it to be used at 75% hull).... or if that seems ability like a duration increase to evasive (2-3 seconds)
Breen set... honestly the EPS boost is fine... 3 piece instead of adding an ability could have reduced some other cool down by 5-10 seconds... BFI perhaps or abandon ship ? (I joke)
Yes nice buffs but not whole new skills that are a pain in the butt to balance properly, and in general are so good you can't compete with out em.

Aye, done correctly that's what sets should do. Unfortunately, STO sets kill variety. It does this in part because there are so few, but it also does this by making any non-set combination pretty pointless.

This explains it much, much better. Sets should be a minor boost, not powerful passives and even more abilities in an ability spam heavy environment.

I suppose that is one way, but I was refering to just your average item drop or something you pick up from the STF store (that isn't part of the set) for example. Base gear that isn't part of a set but could be combined with a set, or even stronger solo pieces.
I really love the full borg set and still rock it on my raptor. Escorts are the only ships that really can take advantage of it because of the low number of heals an escort can carry. But yeah the sets are getting stupid. Throw in the fact that they all have to be of the same mark and rarity to work, this id mostly the breen/Reman/STF sets.

I don't expect the average item drop to ever be made better than a set bonus, since the set items are basically on-par with purples without the set bonus being taken into account. However, I can see them creating EXEMPLARY single pieces that do, hence the suggestion.
It may also be possible to create Blues and Purples that RARELY have a chance to get a normal trait transitioned into one of the indigo traits. One way to do it might be a Doff mission from the Ferengi trader, the item creation missions, etc. I can't seeing them making it as easy as Standard Borg Equipment though.
After a bit more thought, another way they COULD do it (but probably more effort) is that all ships get a Universal Bonus Console slot.
If you have any set bonuses equipped, that slot gets greyed out. If no set bonuses, you can equip any console into that slot (and/or maybe some special consoles that can ONLY be put into that slot.)
So the sets will still give 2 bonuses vs 1, so strictly better, but depending on your ship and strategy the 1 may be better for you.
Better is relative. The non-set items should be stronger, with higher stats to make them appealing for different purposes. The sets get strong gimmicks. The other items need not be worthless.
It's not so much about making them better as it is about making them viable alternatives.
