It's been two years. Two really good years. She's been with me through two alts as well as my main character and still she's my favorite ship.

The excelsior and her retrofit versions were never my favorites in the movies or shows. I only started flying it here because it was the only TOS movie era ship available at T5.. but it didn't take her long to win me over.

I think that's because it was the first ship that was truly mine.. I wasn't trying to fly my version of the Enterprise, or my version of the Voyager. I was flying my ship, experiencing new stories and really immersing myself in Trek.

What's everyone else's favorite and why? Favorite ship, favorite officer, etc. ?

This is a starship management game I was looking forward to since SFC2 in 1999.

I love the cruisers in STO because everyone says ESTFs are escort centric.

Not true at all. I made my Sovereign into a torpedo proof, unsinkable in-your-face assault ship that can dish out major mayhem while healing 2-3 allied ships simultaneously.

WIth such a build you definitely feel like Captain Picard coming to the rescue in the Battle of Sector 001.

See that tiny escort taking fire from the Borg cube? Suddenly, the Sovereign arrives and swoops ahead to draw fire and extend shields, and Borg plasma beams simply dissipate harmlessly off advanced shielding.

The whole 'captain's chair' roleplay experience is complete when the ship becomes the central core of a PUG elite STF task force every morning. This to me is the true definition of Star Trek roleplaying. No social events at Quark's, no play-by-email. Leadership from the front in the field.

Sounds like a real trek moment. Your sovereign sounds tough, what's her name?

I definitely know what you mean about the starship management too. I used to play battle cruiser 3000ad and bcMillennium. They had the management right, but there just wasn't anything to do. STO isn't as in depth, but there definitely is more to do.

Used to be called the Lexington, which is based off the original USS Lexington (CC-1) before she was converted to a carrier that served in the early years of WW2. The original design of Lexington was a battlecruiser, which fit the Sovereign's role perfectly (classed assault cruiser in STO.)

In Star Trek canon there is also a USS Lexington with Starfleet registry NCC-1709. In-game, I can't use 4 digit registries so I just made it NCC-101709.

    http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/USS_Lexington_(NCC-1709)
    http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/USS_Lexington_(NCC-1709)

Since I joked about and later became serious about running a 'redneck' fleet that is no talk all action, I renamed her Spirit of Texas after the B-2 stealth bomber, which is actually appropriate for the current version of my assault cruiser - she has maximum kinetic resistance so is almost impenetrable, and is configured to be very fast. Faster, in fact, than most tactical escorts. That does give her a surprising ability to start an engagement from one direction, let the fleet fix the enemy, then loop around really quick to outflank them or hit another target of opportunity while the enemy is preoccupied. In some way, that's sort of a 'stealth bomber' sort of role.

In this iteration I replaced the standard Sovereign model with the C-store Imperial class assault ship, which really does look the part. Although it's totally non Trek, I saw that this up-armoured and stout design was exactly what you wanted if you wished to fly head on against the Borg as we do in STFs.

    Ps.

And on a side note I enjoyed the 3000AD series for what it is, a starship management simulator. The combat was nothing to talk about, everything looked unfinished, but the starship management was complex and confusing and has too much verbose detail which is just how I like it!

I've been wanting to find a copy of Universal Combat: AWA but it's never sold on local shelves. The developer has quite a bad rep.

I did have a lot of good moments in the early versions of BC3K though. The early games had better, more aggressive enemy AI and once I even received a nasty kamikaze attack from an enemy fighter that lost its mothership. It just turned to ram and I was too surprised to do anything about it. I was then forced to escape 3 other enemy cruisers by crash landing on the nearest moon because my engines were disabled, There, I deployed mining drones to source for repair materials while I did what I could to patch the ship up with what spares I had.

Also deployed crew and vehicles for a ground security team.

However when I saved and exited the game I could not load it back up thanks to yet another infamous bug. Pity. Played to win, the game is seriously flawed, but when systems are all shot up and failing, that's crisis management at its finest. I've never seen any other game that's so immersive in emergency management (outside of rescue 911 sims possibly), in any other game damage was simply simulated by hitpoints and percentages.

My favorite thing is the community. I would've left long ago if not for my friends around here. I wish we could get some bonuses for teaming up with fleetmates. -nudges devs-

I used to love that kind of thing in BC300AD. You have a point about the bugs though. i used to just try to get from the starting location and kind of trek around the map to visit as many places as i could and re-supply and repair en route. I doubt i ever did a single mission in all my time playing because there just wasn't time before the bugs made it un-playable and i had to re-start.

I like what was said about the community here too. I love these forums and the zone chat. where else can you go to just talk trek?

I have to say that the community inside the game is what motivates me to continue to play. At first I was hesitant. I notice a lot of forums become flame wars over things everyone hates about Trek without mentioning all the good things they love. In STO it's different. People are there not to bully or complain about ridiculous things, but to enjoy the game and experience life in the Trek universe. The community is amazing and it's what keeps me playing.

Graphics - STO looks really crisp and nice. I keep playing other mmo's and being disapointed by the graphics. STO nailed it just right.

space combat - still very gun and very unique.

episodes - really nice missions and a lot better than the standard stuff mmo's serve up.

the foundry - i love making missions in the star trek universe. its as close as i will get to making a tv episode or writing a book on star trek.

Back in the 90s I spent the early days of my being on the internet taking part in an IRC Star Trek RP group. STO let me recreate that character. I have bridge officers based off alternate characters I played in the group. My ship is based off the very first ship I ever commanded.

Plus I get to come up with my own uniform designs. And then change them at a moment's notice when I come up with a different (sometimes better, sometimes worse) design.

I get to run around in the Trek 'verse, piloting a starship, sending crew members off on missions.

    STO is awesome.
