Hi folks. Long time no see. No one will recognize me I'm sure, which is great; I love being stealthy. I played through beta and a couple months into release, got to Admiral and retired for greener pastures. It happens. Anyways, I used to be pretty active here, often battling in mighty forum wars the people who insisted that STO sucked and would be dead in 6 months, the game was doomed, Cryptic would file chapter 7, etc etc ad nauseum. I'm glad to see they were wrong and I was right.

My purpose in posting is to mention how effing great the game looks! There are so many new features that I'm sure most people take for granted that blew me away. The first time I scanned an anomaly and the wave feature popped up....it freaked me out. Didn't know what was going on. After all, I just logged on as a whim, I hadn't kept track of the game in 2 years. It was a pleasant surprise that you actually got to interact with the <censored> thing instead of scanning and moving on. And the duty officers! I'm finding myself logging on real quick before work just so I can keep them busy. It's an interesting dynamic, and I only wish you could space 'em 'cuase I have a research scientist who fails at everything but might do well at a naked body in a vacuum research experiment....but I digress. Guess I'll just dismiss him eventually.

The graphics are so much better, and smoother, then before. I like the changes to sector space, and the worlds are finally fleshed out some. Sure, they could be better, but compared to release they're phenomenal. I noticed there aren't as many incidents of crew members being inadvertantly bald, which is a relief, though you still look like Fred Flinstone if you run while scanning. Hmmm. Maybe I should make a character that looks like him; it'd be a hoot in coop missions.

In chat at Sol I saw someone lamenting the quality of discussion, and blaming F2P for it; it wasn't any worst back when we had to subscribe. But what a shocking relief to NOT hear people asking where Sulu was! And I saw you now have a silver trail to follow to the Admiral's office. Nice time saver, that. Not to mention how much the Starbase has changed! It's bigger, I like the new departments, like medical, to. Still don't see why we have to have 40 foot ceilings...I feel like a Liliputian running around.

I remember how excited people were when bridges were introduced. Never really cared, I'm anti-social so I wasn't going to invite people on board. But for S&Gs I went to my bridge and saw I could roam engineering. WOW. I was shocked to find officers who I could talk to to create new components, or for new missions for my duty officers. I may end up spending more time with those fricken DOFFs then I do blowing up Klingon and Gorn ships! Makes me feel more captainly to; after all, the Captain's job is to manage the ship and crew, not do everything himself. So sure, I'll happily send a diplomat off to do a survey of some colony. Let HIM run around with a tricorder for awhile.

I do admit it's mildly disconcerting to me to engage an NPC in conversation and not hear a voice. I guess ME and other games have spoiled me. I'd like to see that change; maybe Cryptic could do a 'contest' or something and use players as voice actors. Also, I'd like to see an integrated voice command system. I've been using Voice Attack and Windows voice pack, but they seem buggy and don't always work. Didn't always work in the old days either. Might be operator error.

Anyways, I'd like to thank Cryptic for keeping up with this game, and improving it so much. Ya'll did a much better job then I thought you would, and I was one of your supporters! <LOL>

    Welcome back!

I wonder what it would be like if STO was released in its current state?

There have been a lot of great improvements to the game that you mentioned.
The last 12 months have been a real trial for the survivors of "The Great Content Drought".

I'm looking forward to eating up the new content faster than it can be produced :p

    ps. The game is doomed!

Hmm...let's see...what would have happened if the game was released as it is now...

Well, people would complain that it sucked, that it lacked content, that the graphics were bad, that we were LIED!!!! LIED TO I SAY!!!, that it doesn't feel like Star Trek, that it's WoW in Space, Cryptic and devs have no idea what they're doing, and the game is doomed and won't last 6 months at which point they'll go out of business and no one will ever trust them enough to ever by a new game from them (which makes sense if they're out of business...duh). In other words...everything would be exactly the same! <LOL>

Something I used to try to hammer home to people is MMOs are never released completed. They're constantly growing and changing. You have to give them time; no matter how much content there is at release, there will be people who finish faster then everyone else who then rush to the forums to lambast the devs for lack of content. Even if they were only able to finish it so swiftly because they stayed up day and night injecting Redbull straight into their eyeballs and ignored all the content in a mad grind to the finish line, they'll still blame the devs. Sadly, you can't tell those people any different. Even pointing out the loads of content they skipped over, they'll just ignore you and claim to be right. I'm glad to see Cryptic increased so much of the content over what was released...I stand vindicated <LOL>.

It'd be nice if the timeline advanced a few years though.

There is a difference between releasing a MMO that is incomplete, and one that grows and changes after release. Its funny that MMO's are able to get away with it. STO is in a much better state than it was when released, and we can now look forward in anticipation for the growing phase. :)

A new page was recently added to the STO website that might be of interest to you ...
