The KDF UI is too red!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I get that red is their color and all, but please let us change the color theme of the UI. Having to stare at a screen filled with red is the primary factor that discourages me from playing my KDF characters more often.

Funny...I actually prefer the red interface over the blue. :p

What color would you want to change it to?

fed's dark blue is fine, a neutral dark grey would also be good.

i have been here since the beta, and am only now considering the klingon gameplay

the reason: the horrible red color of the hud
i dont care if this color is 100% canon, it's annoying..

Have to admit I;m a +1 to this. I can play the federation toon I have for hours. 30-45 minutes with the Klingons and I;m having eye strain.

I have to admit, that I created a Klingon character because I actually like the Klingon Empire as a playable race.

I enjoyed playing Klingon Academy with my Klingon ships and voice overs. I enjoyed playing as the Klingon Empire in Birth of the Federation and in Star Trek Armada. However, I do not enjoy playing Klingons in Star Trek Online because I can’t stand the UI. It gives me a headache.

The Klingon UI does not have enough contrast. The color scheme of the overall UI is much too bright red for my eyes. I wish I could tone the bright red in favor of a darker red, sort of like the color of real human blood when it is exposed to the air. The overall UI color of Red needs to be darker! I think the text in the UI should be bright red on a dark red background.

I also do not like the choice of yellow for highlighting contacts or other ships. I think it should be a different shade or brightness of red on red.

That is just my own opinion. If we could make color changes to the UI, i'd play Klingons more often.

Another one of those? I guess that means I can give another +1 to this as well.

It's not that I want to take the red away for the people that like it.I just want to get rid of some of it for myself! At least they could give hostile ships a blue color. That orange/red difference is way too little. I suppose it's particularly bad due to my red/green weakness, but it's really difficult for me to see what are hostiles and what are friendlies.

^And what part of "get a life" is a useful contribution to this discussion?
I agree with the original poster, one of the main reasons I don't play more with my Klingon toons is the overwhelming red HUD.
I get that the color may be "canon" to Klingon ships in all of the scenes in TV/ movies where Klingon interiors are seen, but if we are going to cling to what is canon then why is the labeling in English and not Klingon(ese)?
I know that red is sometimes used for ambient lighting to protect night vision for night ops and in darkened rooms to allow personnel to see their instruments better. The reason for that is that the brain doesn't register red when controlling eye focus or pupil dilation, but as a result red is a difficult color to focus on.
I would much prefer if the red were subdued or a more neutral color were available instead. brown, gray, whatever, it would even be better if the red were only used for frames and borders of the windows instead of overlaying everything as it is now.
No doubt if Romulans become a playable faction in the future, I expect that their HUDs and overlays will be predominately green, that to me would be preferable, that the eye straining red of Klingon ships.

At least the HUD is not a shifting rainbow with the blink command tied in for good measure.

A UI with sliders for the colour is the right this to do since its hard to make everybody happy.

The most disgusting part of all is that sector space stars are all red colored. It makes the already ugly Red HUD even worse.

Since red and green seem to be the Klingon main colors (greenish coloring of their hulls, red is obvious) The UI should be red, but as most have stated a darker red and enemies should detect as red and allies should detect as green. That would solve all the eye stain and color contrast issues all in one shot.

IHO, I personally would like to have a transparent HUD and color coded abilities on both sides, the only colors I want to see for targeting is green (kdf) / blue (fed) for friendlies, red for enemies and keep it as minimal as possible.

How about we CHOOSE different UI colors? THAT WOULD MAKE MORE PEOPLE PLAY KDF.

Whats wrong with red ? Red is much easier on the eyes than blue in the sense that it doesnt degrade your eyesight like blue does.

    http://www.sciencentral.com/articles/view.php3?article_id=218392616

That being said, more contrast would be welcome, and having yellow for enemy and orange for ally needs to change since the colors are to similar

Just give us the ability to customize the UI on both sides. I agree the KDF side is too red. Personally I'd like my UI on both sides to be green.

Oddly enough, the red on Starfleet Command's Klingon UI gives me more headaches/eyestrain than this one does. Not sure why (different shades? Better for my slight colorblindness contrasts? I don't need to stare at it as much in STO as SFC?)

Though I'm all for as much customization as humanly possible (and can be easily stuffed into the code), so

    +1

Though honestly, if there's anything with the Klink colors I'd love to see changed is the color of the player/ship names, the current shade takes way too much getting used to for me...

I started KDF a few weeks ago and i must say, its not very easy to see who is enemy and who is not. They both use those orange/red triangles around ships so i have to look really close (bad monitor as well) to see if someone is actually a threat

You know what I love about this, "UI is too red," complaint that keeps popping up? It implies that more people want to play KDF than actually do.

We need more threads like this.

A dev reply saying "Oh, and we'll fix the Red UI / give you more UI customization" would be a nice addition. There is little point in having people try out the KDF to immediately turn them off with the UI, don't you think?

Oh I agree. First time I tried KDF, (real moment of honesty here), right after launch I ran about a bit, saw a healthy population and realized I lost quite a bit because I was fighting the UI. Wound up not playing that toon for a very long time.

You do get used to it over time though. I now have 10 KDFs and I play them more often than I do my Feds. Well now a days I play Fed to give the KDF something to fight in the PvP ques. Seeing that most Feds would rather fight themselves and KDF only wants to fight Feds.

Still I woulda payed that first toon much more often if the UI was not so difficult to adapt to.

I really do not think changing the UI is going to get more players to play the KDF LOL. Maybe actually putting work into development to get people to play it may but that is the problem they think they developed it but its far from attracting players who are not hardcore Star Trek Klingon Fans.

This. The red might be tolerable if [A] the backgrounds were darker and it wasn't orange-on-red.

I really miss being able to change the colors like I could in CoH/V
