It doesn't take a whole lot to disable a resistor in some laser pointers and get a beam that would generate enough heat to pop a balloon. Certainly not a level of skill that is going to get any government attention.

    Nice toy, tho.

Isn't that a Laser in phaser disguise...?

I doubt that little thing can create a phase modulated energy beam? xD

It also only has a visible beam because he is firing it in a smokey room...

Will it pass airport security :D

I would argue that real phasers don't exist anyway. Yet!

Blue ray laser diode for the win. I wonder what'd happen if you arranged several arround a collimator lens to focus the multiple beams. With fine tuning screws etc and the lens calculated and ground to the right shape, it'd probably be pretty easy.

I remember the TOS "Cage" episode phasers had some sort of glass arrangement at the front and could be adjusted by twisting the lens housing. They were also called "lasers".

The video is cool, but modded blue ray lasers are really nothing new. The smoke machine is a nice touch, though.

What I really loved was the comments from all the morons who thought popping a balloon with a man portable laser was so revolutionary the vid had to be a fake, and the flip-side morons who were all mad that you couldn't disintegrate elephants with it.

I remember an old saying... "Never under-estimate the power of stupid people in large groups." Now that large group is the internet!

I think this was how he did it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=fJ77l23xwak

However, I don't think it includes a frequency remodulator. Who cares about not vaporizing elephants when you can't atomize the Borg? :D

It's certainly not a 'real' phaser, but it's pretty cool, IMO, and I'm pretty sure the video is not a 'fake.' Some further elaboration.

If you could get that laser driving 100W or so you could do some serious damage. The amount of power it would take would be unreal though. Not possible with handheld lasers at this time though,

    Correct me if Im wrong
