I've been playing for a couple of months now, and about half way through the Romulan story (been playing alot of foundary missions as well).
Been lurking on the boards, but just found out I can post after buying from the C-Store, so I thought I would introduce myself. So hello.
My character is Admiral (please, he's a Captain) Stunshock, flying the Galaxy class U.S.S. Chicago, though he has been known to transfer to temporary command of other vessels in need of captains (I like having in story reasons for things, like why there are so many ships). This is my first online multiplayer game, and I still have no idea on what things I read mean like PUG, DPS and so on. But I'm willing to learn.
Yeah, the terminology is pretty universal to the gameplay of all mmo's these days. Most of them have been used in Dungeons and Dragons for decades, but some are new. Here's a few I've learned since my time here:
PUG -- Pick-Up Group. This is a randomly assigned group of players trying to run a mission together. There is no team loyalty, like Kirk trying to team up with a Klingon.
AoE -- Area of Effect. This is either a weapon or ability that deals damage to multiple enemies within an area.
DoT -- Damage over Time. The bad guys lose HP over an amount of time, like they're poisoned. It can TRIBBLE up people in this game when they're trying to interact with a switch and can't because they're taking damage.
Procs -- This is a weird one. It refers to unique effects that some weapons have, which cause a unique procedural script to run. In this game, phasers have a chance to knock out a system temporarily, that is their "proc".
There are three common class types in these games:
DPS -- Damage Per Second. These guys dish out pain faster than any other, but die quickly. Tactical / Escort in this game.
Tank -- Don't deal much damage, but it takes a lot to take them down. Their job is to distract a boss while the DPS guys pound on him. Engineer / Cruiser here.
Healer / Controller -- These folks either heal and buff allies or weaken enemies in groups. Alone, they don't tend to win fights. On a team though, these are the most valuable players. Science / Science here.
Ah, that helps alot. That would make me a tank. I have no idea if my ship is well built, as it levelled up too quickly to get a good handle on the thing, but it does seem to take ages to take my ship down (though there is a few times when my ship just randomly goes pop!)
Post your build on fleet shipyards. My primary is a TAC, but I bought extra Boff slots. So I fly cruisers, and escorts.I have two other Alt toons. One Engineer,(Commander 22),and a new TAC.I will take a look at your build. Quick advice.RUN the same type energy weapons, rainbow ships fail in PVP or PVE.I like the classics at that level. Good old phasers. If you post in shipyards, tell me what you are trying to succeed at with yours, and I will try to give you advice. I have a T-3 excelsior build I am quite combat effective in.Watch your hull in combat....I've let overconfidence tanking dammage get me (still) Keep engineering Team 1 or 2 in your Boff skill slots. Max it out as fast as you can. Check your shield skills too.Hazzard emitter is a great Sci skill to have for your science slot.Gets rid of that nasty hull eating, shield rotting cloud of plasma that plasma torpedo's cause.Their will be other people who will probhably read that thread and put in their opinions too.
