(Junior Starfleet and Romulan officers serving in the Cardassian Reconstruction Force) (Ensign-Junior Lieutenant)

The first two hours of the shift just dragged on. Answering questions from the previous night's status reports, crewman evaluations, system checks, and reviewing the senior officer's duties for the shift. Tonight you were tasked with monitoring for ships travelling through Cardassian space. This seemed to be the most laborious station on the shift. All the crew ever saw were 23rd and 24th century traders passing through and with few breaks during the shift; the hardest part is staying awake to type a small situation report of stardate, time, ship name, captain, faction, and destination.

You were beginning to doze off when two pings abruptly brought you back. The scanner picked up something very different this time, it seemed as though the monitors usually dozed off at the same time; but now this ping saved you from the dreaded z monster. It also meant that this was more than the normal trader; Pings had been designed into the system to help "warn" of abnormal activities and as you peek at the monitor; your energy returns. Vessel names (this alone was abnormal as most traders travelled alone) UNKNOWN, Captains: Unknown, Vessel Types: Jem Hadar attack ships, faction Dominion, Destination unknown entering Cardassian space.

You attempt to hail the ships with no response and suddenly they disappear from screen.

Admiral T'vess was lounging in his small hovel enjoying a glass of Romulan Ale. Eventhough it was morning, noone ever checked in on this worthless piece of dust in the middle of Cardassian space. The Admiral found out early on what happens when you get on Empress Sela's bad side, it was worse than death.

T'vess had been stuck on Umoth Prime for three years now; no ships other than a squadron of Romulan warships blockading the planet. The Admiral of that blockade whoever it was now, would aquire the supplies through traders and one of the Romulan transports would deliver relief supplies to the dock yards.

It was hot outside, somewhere between 125 and 150 degrees Kelven; for twenty six hours each day (the rotation of the planets made the normal day here twenty eight). So, the Admiral and his senior officers just stayed locked up in their prison walls with all of the luxuries the blockade provided. It didn't much matter to him how the Cardassian settlers fared, they seemed ingenuitive enough living in their dirt holes and caves.

The last delivery the colony received was six months ago when the Romulan Star Empire delivered eighteen 22nd century Federation food replicators, bags of earth cement which seemed like just more dirt to the Admiral, and a dozen 24th century temperature control generators which lukily just enough to supply his crew. Of course if he cared he could have consolidated the crew to three enlisted or even two junior officers and been able to supply some of the generators to the colonists, but why. Just being here was punishment enough.

The front door creaked open slightly, the Admiral still heavily under the influence of the Ale slowly rose to his feet. Two shadowy figures appeared in the doorway and fired phasers killing the Admiral; now lying in a pool of ale with burns on his chest.

    CAPTAIN SALAS/USS ARCHANGEL/CARDASSIAN SYSTEM

Captain Salas just returned from holodeck 3 and his old west program. It was a little strange walking back to his quarters wearing a 19th century U.S. Cavalry officer's uniform, but a built up pride swelled within him as he was able to experience part of what his ancestors lived through. His ancestors served in various styles of cavalry scouts (the original deep recon) dating back to Europe in the 16th century. From leading security forces for the Spanish explorer Pedro Men

    UMOTH PRIME; CARDASSIANS

At first Jevak thought he had time, watching the Romulan Soldiers some struggling to make any headway up the ridge, others just lingering at the edge of town, and nowhere near his friends. That was until the group at the edge of town vanished from exsistence only to appear halfway up the ridge. Suddenly what appeared to be a morning of entertainment turned into a serious issue requiring an urgent response.

He began running towards the caves to warn the others. He was afraid to shout out a warning that may help the Romulans locate the makeshift settlement. Running through the paths alerted Jevak of yet another problem, as pebbles and dirt were pushed down along the ledges as if something was knocking them out of place although nothing appeared to be in the area. Could this be what the Romulans are chasing? or worse, the Romulans found a way to create cloaked body armor. He sped up with greater urgency, the extreme heat of Umoth now after forty years began to tug away at his will. His lungs burned with the smothering humidity, sweat pouring like the waters from the air tube; time and again he wanted to quit yet he continued for the sake of the others.

He arrived at the first cave yelling over his exhaustion Gul Makvek!! Trouble!!, the Romulans are coming quickly they'll be here soon! The retired Cardassian officer replied You need to stop drinking Kanar, its effecting your head. The Romulans hadn't left their barracks during daylight since they arrived at the settlement. Either this was a joke or something bad really happened. Makvek stood up and headed to the door, What happened, did someone go into the city? A worn and ragged Jevak entered the door. panting heavily trying to get his words out. No, not us; I thought I saw Saw what demanded Makvek.

Jevak looked up with frightened eyes Jem Hadar. Makvek was stunned for a moment. What were the Jem Hadar doing here? A planet of waste. The retired Officer headed to his chest and pulled out an old Cardassian Uniform. It would never be complete without weapons, but those days were long past now. Jevak looked at him What are you doing? continuing to dress Makvek just snorted I'm going down to talk to the Romulans, You're going to gather the others and move higher up the ridge.

Ray slowly let out the breath he had taken and loosen the his grip on the chair. True the ship was all ready at yellow alert but he had been so concerned of the Jem`hadar that he had negligeted to sweep for any Roumulan ships in the area. "On Screen Lieutenant, Admiral JVal, if you were a snake you would have bit me in the..well were here. however we should keep this as curt as possible seeing that there seams to be a battle on the ground. not to menchan that we may have some unfriendly's in the neighborhood"

Admiral JVal leaned back in his commander's chair, smiling. Captain, our compliments on your swift arrival. I'd be honored if you and your staff would accompany me in this evening's dinner. Be assured, there is plenty of Romulan Ale on board. As for the firing on the planet, just a few conspirators being dealt with."

    Captain Salas
    Commander Telru
    Lt Cho'arie

The Makar: the captains table dining room.

later that evining the Captain and his first officer and CMO were at the captains table on board the Makar. Raymundo admired the architectural aspects of the room, the room spoke control the bold angles and spartan military colors gave it a feeling of order. Captain Salas sat on the left of the Roumulan commander. opposite the Admiral who sat to the commanders left.

"Admiral," Telru began. "What exactly is going on the planet below?."

Admiral J'Val gave the commander a noncommittal look but before answering the food arrived form the kitchens.

"Come friends, lets....whats the Federation tradition? A Coast? No...no...Yes! A Toast! to the strengthening of alliances and a future of joint endeavors."

The table members toasted and drank the light blue liquor.

Captain Salas was the first to break the following scilence. "Si, Admiral J'Val, please tell us of what is going on here and why we are needed?"

Admiral J'Val looked at Captain Salas and smiled You aren't like the other Federation Captains I've met before, you sound too much like a Vulcan. He casually grasped his hands together, and paused a moment looking around the table. He stopped his glance at Commander Tel'ru Sir, you are an Andorian correct?

Commander Tel'ru responded yes sir, I am Andorian and we have a keen sense when someone is avoiding the question sir. Admiral J'Val began a slight laughter with a sense of anxiety about his aura. The other Romulan officers began to chuckle as well. I hear the Andorians make a wonderful beverage as well, its said that in the 21st century an Andorian gave a Romulan some brandy and turned him into a Vulcan. The Romulans at the table began laughing hard at the comment, but Captain Salas maintained his straight face expecting a more military answer to his question. The table quieted down and the Romulans began eating their meal.

Captain, please enjoy your meal and I will share what I have regarding the situation. The Admiral slowly waved his hand across the table indicating that everyone should enjoy the meal. The Starfleet officers waited for Ray to take the first bite, but after a brief moment everyone began eating.

J'Val looked at Captain Salas. On stardate 25877.29 at approximately 2300 hours, one of our crew members identified two Jem Hadar vessels in this system. They appeared but for a moment then no trace of them since. The next morning at 0900 the Romulan Governor of the Umoth system was assassinated in his quarters. Since we have not seen any sign of the Jem Hadar after 2300, we assume that an unknown number of their species are still on the planet. Our scans haven't picked anything up and we believe they are being aided by a group of Cardassians which are living in those same mountains and resisting the order we are providing.

Commander Tel'Ru politely spoke up, Sir, our sensors picked up phaser fire on the planet along those ridges. The Admiral looked at the first officer for a moment Yes, I should have realized Starfleet's sensors are advanced enough to identify that. The other day we captured a few of the leaders of the rabble. They were tried according to galactic law, judged, and their sentences carried out. Tel'Ru followed up with another inquiry Sir, our sensors also indicated that only Romulans are residing in the colony, what happened to the Cardassians?

The Admiral sat back uncomfortably and then realized some of the officers at the table stopped eating. Please, Please enjoy yourselves. He called back to the service to refill the glasses with Romulan Ale.

What are you doing? continuing to dress Makvek just snorted I'm going down to talk to the Romulans, You're going to gather the others and move higher up the ridge.

Jevak and Makvek left the cave at the same time, while Jevak headed up the ridge; Makvek confidently headed down to meet the Romulan patrols. Jevak began running again, but stopped long enough to see the Colonies hero shot by a team of Romulan phasers. He struggled up the hill, but the patrols were moving faster as they would materialize further up. As one patrol was materialed in a sector of the ridge a second patrol dematerialized only to reappear even higher in a different sector. Jevak was able to reach and warn several families, but arrived at Lenzechak's cave too late. The charming instructor and a class of ten children missing with tablets broken on the floor and furniture tipped over in disarray.

    Captain Salas
    Commander Telru
    Lt Cho'arie

The Makar: the captains table dining room.

Captain Salas looked to his right to watch his Chief Medical Officer. he hazel eyes were like stone. staring intently at the Admiral. hands gripping her knife and fork with a white knuckle grip. Raymundo know that he had to think quickly least this spiral into a diplomatic quandary.

"Well," said the Captain, leaning back esaly and pulling out his napkin and dabbing at his mouth. "Starfleets orders for me is simply the investigation Jem`Hadar activity's in the sector. the best place to start is on the surface. after all we can hardly learn with out... talking with all involved. And I am sure as you know the Praetors interests is to... keep the peace. Form our collective scans it does seam that the trouble makers or in the mountins. your men keep doing your thing and well send a small team behind there lines and work our magic, cut them off at the pass if you will" the captain gave a low chuckle at this. "My first officer will Take the Archangel and begin a sweep of the local systems for the rogue Jem`Hadar attack ships." The captain placed the napkin on his plate, downed the remainder of his ale, and flashed the Romulan's and smile. "Adios Admiral, if you excuses us."

the three officers filed out of the officer, Admiral J'Val with a angry look on his face. Telru looked at Cho'arie as they made there way toward the transporter room he watched as her shoulders and fists got tighter and tighter. as the party mertilized in the Archangels transporter room she turned to Raymundo and hissed, "How could they! Prophets damn them even though they are Cardassians the Romulans are no different form how the Cardassians treated the Bajorians.... they...they.....

Telru put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "let the dead rest, do what you can for the living"

Ray taped his comm badge, "Lt Alem, Mitsuko, report to transporter room 1" Command Telru, you have the com. Find those ships. well take the Peregrine Fighter, Richthofen, will set up a camp and get in contact over a secure channel." As he said this the two lieutenants walked in. "All righto then, i don't know what were ridding into but be prepared, saddle up and ride."

    Captain Salas
    Chip
    Mitsuko

    >>>Shuttle Fighter Richthofen<<<

The Richthofen broke below cloud cover as it made its decent over the baked desert landscape. from the captains view at the helm he got a good lay of the land. There was group cluster of out buildings that he knew lead to a interconnected subterranean network. To the East was rolling hills with the odd upthrust of broken rock. There was the continental dived to the west that created a series of jagged peaks and valleys for about a thousand Kilometers and stretched south and north as far as he could see. Further west of the mountains was a rolling sea of dunes. He Adjusted coarse for one of those valleys.

As the craft got closer he was able to see more detail. from a v shaped notch in the mountains there was a dam, form it flowed a small river that supplied most of the towns water. it snaked its way north of the town and feed a few farm steads that managed to cling to the barren land.

"Chip" Ray said, "what is your tactical thinking on this here LZ?"

Shihab shifted in his chair to where he could see a sensor read out of the area. "If there are still any living cardassians they would have fled to the most defensible area, which would be here." he said as he highlighted a area on the scanner map south west of the dam. "its the main source of water its closed off on three sides."
"Sir I'm seeing servile Life signs moving around about three quarters of the way down the mountain" Mitsuko added, " I can not get a good read being that most are under ground but i think that i am detecting still living Cardassins trying to escape. There are also eight Roumulan squads conducting a sweep of the cave network." The holo stopped for a moment to analyze. odds of the Cardassians making it to safety is statistically unlikely Sir.

"well we will just have to give the Roumulans something better to think about than the Cardassian Civies." Raymundo said rubbing his hands. "Mitsuko use the sensory data to estimate the next patrol pop in, Lt. Alem Set Fore Phaser array to .001% power. I'll sweep in low and see if we can buy some time, let play some good ol wack'a'mole!"

Three days of traveling up the ridge and trying to stay ahead of the patrols was taking its toll on the colonists as they traversed through the rough conditions. Since the escape began, the refugees lost fifteen members as the elderly couldn't maintain the pace. All that were left were twenty adult men thirty five women, and thirty children too young to attend classes.

The group was moving slow as the adults took turns carrying supplies and the toddlers up the draws. There were very few breaks during those days with the longest being an hour to change into heavy clothing as they were reaching the snow peaks and again to remove the extra weight once they cleared the extreme conditions. With the Romulan soldiers keeping pace, the group broke off into four smaller teams led by former Soldiers and survivalists each taking different paths to the Gultran farms.

Jevak chose to lead the smallest team with seventeen others to traverse the deep crevasses leading down the ridge. The former special operations ground combat specialist doubled the weight his group would carry to attempt to deceive the Romulans into thinking this was the main group. With difficult terrain any experienced team leader would understand the dangers of transporting through these areas.

Jevak's group was moving down the ridge struggline with every step; when a Romulan assault team began to materialize in front of them. For a moment he thought the group was done for, but as the Romulans became solid they were once again dematerialized and disappeared.

    >>>Shuttle Fighter Richthofen<<<

Lieutenant Alam began tapping multiple keys, Captain Salas knew he was up to something but was amazed how quickly his junior was moving. He saw one othe person during his career move this quickly and that person was Captain Data.

What's going on Chip?, Alam continued with the keys We have a group of unarmed Cardassians and a Romulan patrol materializing slightly to our north sir. I'm hacking into the Romulan transporter system to obtain the patrol's signals.. A moment later Chip looked at the Captain I just sent them into the peaks sir, they'll be alright but very cold. This will bide us some time. If you want, there is just enough space to land this by the Cardassians but the shuttle is too small to carry all of them.

    Cardassian

The group was stunned, what happened just now. Jevak knew the group had no weapons so the colonists didn't do it, could it be a problem with the Romulan transporter..that could be something no officer would wish on anyone. Just then a Shuttlecraft came into sight; it wasn't a Romulan.. It was Federation and as it passed overhead Jevak thought he saw a human make a casual wave or salute. Jevak's group was safe, but what about the others??

Lt Alem walked off the gangway of the Richthofen as the dust settled, HOIS wrist bad to see if Mitsuko picked up any further Romulan activity. he dobbled checked his phaser rifle settings and waved to Captain Salas to come out.

Ray stepping into the sun placed a straw hat on his head and nodded to Jevak and walked over and came to a stop and reached a hand out to the Cardassian, "Raymundo Salas, Captain of the USS Archangel" Looking Javak in the eye he frowned. "I am just sorry we could not get here sooner"

    Umoth Prime Romulans

The transporter crewman was stunned, he just materialized a patrol at the western base of the ridge. Now his sensors were picking up Cardassians and two humans. The Romulan patrol on the other hand were being tracked 500 meters up the ridge in the blizzard conditions. Commander can you come here and look at this? Commander Vesna looked away from her map with a disciplined and practiced demeanour; there couldn't be something going on yet. The Cardassians hadn't completely crossed the ridge so they hadn't come to the town yet. She walked over to the transporter station and reviewed the records, everything leading up to this misplacement were accurate. Try transporting them to that location again, the crewman just looked blank at her and responded I tried Commander, but there is some sort of scrambler in the area that prevents me from locking on to their signals.

    The Gathering Kullain Ridge

Jevak was accustomed to military shakes, so he reached out and clasped his hand around the human captains forearm. It took a moment to realize that humans shake with just their hands, but the captain was graceful in this mishap on Jevak's part. Welcome and thank you Captain, I'm former Glinn Jevak Third Order planetary special operations task force. That was a long time ago though. He looked at the Starfleet officer to react, but it was clear this Captain knew that you could take the Soldier out of the uniform, but you couldn't take the uniform out of the Soldier. Jevak felt he could get along with this man, but was still a little nervous to share everything he knew without learning more about this man. Have you found the Jem Hadar? the other day I was standing on the ridge watching the sunrise and thought for a slight moment that I saw two Jem Hadar materialize into the town. The next thing I know these Romulan patrols started chasing us. Because of the rough terrain, this group is trying to bait the Romulans into chasing us. The other groups have whats left of the women and children, any word on their status sir?

Before Captain Salas could respond, he was hailed by the Archangel. What is it Commander? inquired the Captain. Commander Telru here sir, we just had an unidentified trader enter orbit. We started scanning, but their hull prevents external scans. Following the attempt, Admiral J'Val hailed us and informed us that we were not to scan the traders as his patrol has physically inspected all cargo entering orbit.

    >>USS ARCHANGEL<<

Tleru sat in the command chair and watched as a civilian freighter dropped out of warp withing sensor range. "Ensign Blackwood, report." The Commander looked over to watch the aged man at his station key in a sensor sweep of the vessel, he frowned

"Commander" he said, "Their hull is plated ageist our sensors, some sort of alloy, lest one that is new to us."

Telru's antenna twitched in irritation. "If the Romulans were following there prototypical than the plantarie orbit should have been declared a no fly zone and all vessels detained, nothing gets in or out. This ship has some gusto to warp in, Helm lay in a intercept course." Telru leaned back in his command chair. but was soon inturupted.

"Commander." Ensign Dillon at the Helm replied. "The war-bird is moving to cut us off."

"Oh he is now?" Telru replied as Mitsuko announced that the war-bird was hailing the Archangel.

    "Put him through"

Admiral J'Val appeared on the view screen, as he saw that it was Telru he expression turned smug. Telru glowered back.

"Commander, do not worry about the transport it is on official business of the Romulan Star Empire. we will conduct the inspection of the on board shipment to see that it is in line to our satisfaction. I do believe that your Captains orders were to investigate the neighboring systems for signs of the Jem`Hadar."

Telru knew that there was something not right on that ship, and as much as he would love to break down that unrelenting haughty air, he had to avoid a ought right conflict, for now. "Of course Admiral, i will leave you to your work, and we will be breaking orbit as soon as i get final clearance from Captain Salas"

    Umoth Prime Kullain Ridge

"Commander Telru here sir, we just had an unidentified trader enter orbit. We started scanning, but their hull prevents external scans. Following the attempt, Admiral J'Val hailed us and informed us that we were not to scan the traders as his patrol has physically inspected all cargo entering orbit. Kind of reminds me of that time in New Calcutta "

Ray looked up at the sky as though he could see the drama unfolding in orbit above. "well what ever is in that ship will be dealt with in due time. find me those ships, i want to know where they are. you cant plan till all the pieces are on the board. well deal with the Murder investigation here, Salas out."

Raymundo turned and walked to Shihab, "Mitsuko, open a secure channel to the Archangel, link it directly to the bridge."

The short Asian nodded and disappeared much to the surprise of the Cardassians. and spoke form the wrist band saying that the channel was secure.

"Okey Telru, if you mentioned New Calcutta there must be something your not telling me." There was a pause as Telru thought of what to say. "Admiral J'Val know your orders, I don't think he meant to but he just knew too much to just guess form what was mentioned as dinner."

"So i guess it really is like New Calcutta, but remember this is not just some Syndicate Black Market forum where information is worth more than the drink you buy it with." Ray said brushing his hand reassuring against his phaser. "I doubt its hacking otherwise Chip and Mitsuko would have been on it fast... i dont know, i want to say i trust every member of my crew with my life but...." Ray let out a sigh, "The Tal Shier has was of geting information that we cant even think of yet....Listen, get out there and command as you would normally would, break orbit and start your search with where that ship came form. its a long shot but its a start. good will hunting. Salas out"

Mitsuko reappeared next to Lt Alem and Captain Salas turned around to look to see Jevak walk towards him "The sun is setting and we have much ground to cover if we hope to reach shelter."

Ray waved a hand assuringly, "were ready give the location we are trying to reach to my Lt here, he will fly ahead of us with my Chief Medical Officer... Cho? she still on the ship? OCC: Yes i forgot her but i ment to bring her Cho'arie poked her head out of the door of the Richthofen, ear rings glimmering in the fading light. She gave a cold look at the Cardassians and said, "if you have any wounded we have room for a few." and went back inside.

Jevak looked to the Captain and asked, "your coming with us?"

"Sure, a sunset mounten hike, sounds like fun"

After the invitation to place the injured into the shuttle, Jevak thought for a moment. He could have easily assigned the women in the group to take the trip, however this group was mostly former military and could make the hike. He looked at this new acquaintance for a moment; could he truly trust this human? The colonists trusted the Romulans so long ago and suffered because of it. He decided there was no choice, but to take that chance.

Captain Jevak walked over to a large stone and began to spread a hand written map This group is mainly trained in survival, we were attempting to lure the Romulans away from the weaker groups. We've been tracking three teams chasing us down this path. Thanks to your crewmember, one of them is out of the way for the moment. He pulled out a small vial of black liquid dabbed it onto the tip of his finger and painted three different and winding paths leading to the abandoned buildings. The weaker groups are following these trails, we're going to group up at the abandoned buildings and from there move through the tunnels underneath towards an ancient mining facility. Once we get into the tunnels, sensors can't track us. He pressed his pinky twice on one of the lines and once on a second. These groups have a large number of infants and toddlers, can your shuttle scout these and pick up the children at least?

Lt Shihab Lifted off in the Richthofen with Cho'arie and the wounded Cardassians. he will drop them off at the ron-de-view point and go back to collect the young and elderly. the fighter was only meant to carry two pilots and a dozen troops or so so they could never hope to shuttle everyone. And Raymundo knew that the longer the fighter stayed airborne the more likely it was to be detected by the Romulans.

"Javak", Ray asked pointing to the map, "I take it were moving to here." pointing to a area where to passes came close together and a outcrop overhung the valley.

    UMOTH PRIME SPACE

Four Romulan shuttles connected to the trader, an hour later the original four departed heading to the planet as a second group made connection. Over eight hours the process of shuttle transfer items to the planet continued.

    UMOTH PRIME PLANET ROMULAN
Commander Vesna was busier than normal; originally the quartermaster accepting cargo, since the Admiral's murder she was also coordinating tactical manuevers in an attempt to catch the conspirators. Not knowlegable about the various colonies or settlements of the planet, she struggled with decisions a more tactically experienced commander would. In all actuallity, Sub-Commander Dremoss was leading the movements yet in a very political fashion allowing Vesna to maintain command. We have four groups travelling different paths, one appears to have the ability to effect transporters. Are they heading in any direction? The computer screen had a map of Umoth Prime, but failed to provide the detailed terrain in order to predict movements. None that I can tell Commander, but there is a blip over here and it appears one group is heading towards that

Dremoss punched the keys on his pad connecting to the crewman's screen. Commander, it appears that this group is going towards Gultran Farms.

Now that was something that sparked a little suspicion; the Admiral had been sending deliveries to the farm for months leading up to his untimely demise. Maybe now it was time to investigate what these supplies were.

    UMOTH PRIME PLANET CARDASSIANS/CPT SALAS

Jevak nodded to the Captain's inquiry. We will stop at the farm and wait for everyone to arrive. There is a hidden tunnel beneath the hay bales of the cyphon house which leads to ancient mines. We'll walk four days in the tunnels and its dark, damp, and very humid; but once we get in the tunnels we can move at a more liesurely pace.

Captain Salas understood gathering at the city, but everything appeared as though it were a secure position in all directions. The city looks fine, its a very defensable position that can provide plenty of time to respond to any threat approaching. Why do you plan on going into the tunnels? Jevak came to the same conclusion thirty years ago, until Jem Hadar found a way to transport in and kill two dozen Soldiers. It seems that these Romulans or...there was a pause which seemed like a lifetime Something has a cloaking body armor, in the open lands there will be easy traveling under cloak

. In the mountains their unfamiliarity with the terrain ended up kicking rocks or causing small land slides.. they were very subtle, but enough to give us warning. Only four of the colonists know about the tunnels two are now dead. Jevak paused again looking at the Captain Once in the tunnels, the Romulan sensors won't pick us up and the mines will also protect us yet we'll have to find ways to gather food and water.

    Jevak
    Ray
    Cardassian Group 1

    UMOTH PRIME PLANET

Captain Salas listens to Jevak as he explained his plan to escape into the subterranean network once the Cardassian colonist had reach safety. The Captain agreed and picked up a rucksack that had been left by one of the injured, and fell in line with the old solder, he allowed so time to pass till he felt that it was appropriate to bring up his main purpose of making this trip. "the farmstead was owned by Admiral T'vess, what do you know of him?"

UMOTH PRIME PLANET/ CARDASSIANS AND CPT SALAS

Jevak smiled at Ray's comment, The Commander owned all of the dirt and rock of this planet Captain, owned it all with Romulan phasers. He was angry about this posting from day one, you see he fought against Sela and this was worse than death. His entire crew and others who fell out of favor were sent here with no way to leave.

Two hours of scaling down cliffs, moving through desert ravines, and talking about their pasts; the group finally arrived at the outskirts of the farm. Jevak stopped and knelt down, the rest of the group followed. He inhaled deeply, but concentrating very intently on something.

The former Cardassian Soldier spread his fingers out like an old peacock's train (tail) and stretched out his arms. The group spread out lining up flush with the leader and began lying prone against the desert sand. Ray saw this before, even had some basic training on this; but never had a practical opportunity to use it. Jevak noticed the intense interest on the Captain's expression wanting to participate and maybe not sure whether to do so. Captain, Jevak motioned to approach him; come Ray moved closer to Jevak and began to follow the Soldier's lead.

He was about to smooth out the sand where his head would rest upon, but Jevak stopped him. Any slight altering of the terrain glares out like a super nova to ground troops. Jevak closed his eyes and slid his hands under the sand like a scorpion setting his trap, Ray mimicked each move. Now concentrate Ray, can you feel the grains traveling along the desert? what do you... a few seconds pause when Jevak's mien changed more seriously SMELL Captain, what do you smell?

Raymund focused, yes he could feel some movement, he even felt the footsteps approaching ever so slightly, and for a moment he could smell. Romulan spiced Tea being brewed?
At that moment an unfamiliar female voice spoke up Very Good Captain, you are correct about the tea, I'm Commander Vesna; The Romulan Star Empire wants to thank you for collecting this group of conspirators.

UMOTH PRIME; PLANET; USS. Richthofen (Shuttle Craft)

Lt. Alem shook his head, an hour of loud screaming and getting bumped around in the pilot's seat. How did our ancestors do it he mumbled; he didn't expect anyone to hear him but you couldn't hide anything from that half Bajoran/Betazed. Lt. Cho'arie just laughed as twelve kids crawled and jumped on each other playing starship Soldier games. Its probably the first time in a long time, these children were allowed to be children.

My grandmother used to tell us stories about the occupation and the settlements I seem to understand where these kids are coming from. It was a little strange for Chip to hear, afterall Cho was more Bajoran than anything and didn't usually show good nature when Cardassians were involved. I guess so, but I feel like I've been thrown under a stampeded of Telleran Mountain Goats with the noise and rough play.

There was no response from Cho this time, she was busy punching buttons on the sensors. She looked over at Chip, we've got trouble. The Captain's group is at the settlement and so are a group of Romulans. The two adult Cardassians in the back knew something was going on in the front and busily began gathering the children and quieting the passanger area.

UMOTH PRIME PLANET/ CARDASSIANS AND CPT SALAS

"Very Good Captain, you are correct about the tea, I'm Commander Vesna; The Romulan Star Empire wants to thank you for collecting this group of conspiritors." a sultry female voice said form behind them. despite the heat ice shot through him, after a moment he forced the feeling down and comely rolled over on his elbow and used his other had to tip his hat back to where he could see her and the Romulan solders who were now standing over them, disrupters ready.

the solders were tense like a taut bow, waiting for there commanders single. Raymundo had to think fast to defuse the situation. Putting in as much of his Latino charm as he could muster he said, "Howdy Senorita, fancy meeting yourself here" he rolled up on his back and rolled forward and jumped to his feet and placed his hat over his chest in one graceful motion. "Now i don't take too kindly to accutisitans of who did what and why someone acted as they did for I myself don't have all the answers." he reached for one of the packs on his belt and the two bodyguards to the Commander raised their weapons at him, Vesna raised her hand giving the odd human a hard stare.

Form the pack Ray produced a small isoliner chip, "I do admit that morning tea sound lovely and my friends could use some refreshing as well, on here is a replicator orders for some of the best Turkish coffee you have ever had." he bounced the light green rod in his hand a few times before turning his eyes to the Commander. "It also has some of Starfleets latest data on the area Jem`Hadar, what we could get at least. all I need is someone....trustworthy, tell me Commander lest settle down and talk about what we know."

    UMOTH PRIME/PLANET/ROMULANS AND CAPTAIN SALAS

The female Romulan Commander just looked at Captain Salas with amusement. Not many Starfleet officers would just jump up and start casual dialogue with armed Romulans surrounding him. Captain, we just arrived to the farm to continue our investigations. Please join us while Sub-Commander Dremoss takes CARE of the prisoners. At first, that comment didn't quite sound right to Ray, especially the Care part. Still, he escorted Commander Vesna towards the farm house for a nice cup of Coffee. Maybe he'd be able to learn more of what exactly is going on and have a better picture of whether the Cardassians were or were not conspirators to the Admiral's murder.

Once inside the strong sweet aroma of the spiced tea took Ray's memories back to his childhood and the various spiced teas his grandmother used to drink. Still, over the years he'd fallen more towards his brand of poison...the Turkish Coffee. The Commander spoke again as she poured hot water into two cups one with the hot spiced tea; We monitored the approach of the Cardassians Captain, we just began the investigation and there are some very interesting items in the farm house which you should see before making judgement on the innosence of these Cardassians. Captain Salas thought to himself, wow now this is going to be interesting. Commander, can you enlighten me a little of what I'll be walking into at the farm house.

Commander Vesna handed the Captain one cup; We will easily be able to prove that the Cardassians were heading to a weapons stock pile among other things. One of the guards found the butt of a weapon underneath a pile of hay and after shoveling that miserable stuff, found several Jem Hadar rifles and body armor.

    Outer Umoth System: USS Archangel

"Commander Telru, First officer log, mission time +28:25, it has been six hours since leaving orbit and two from losing primary communication form Captain Salas' group. we are entering the edge of the system after tracing the emissions of the freighter that entered orbit when we left. I have strong suspicious that there were Jem`Hadar supplies on that ship, If not solders themselves. we will begin with a standard raidil sweep of the area and make our way back inward."

    Umoth Prime Farm

Commander Vesna handed the Captain one cup, "We will easily be able to prove that the Cardassians were heading to a weapons stock pile among other things. One of the guards found the butt of a weapon underneath a pile of hay and after shoveling that miserable stuff, found several Jem Hadar rifles and body armor."

The two sipped there drinks for a minute before Ray looked up and asked, "T'Vess, seemed to govern this planet with a stern hand. i find it hard to believe that there would be a Cardassian weapon catch under his nose." Ray put the chip in a padd on the table and flipped through the menu till he found the data entry he was looking for. "Shortly after we arrived a Freighter arrived that was heavily shielded and has been farrier servile shuttles to a area in this general vicinity."

    UMOTH PRIME CAPTAIN SALAS

Vesna smiled Captain, the Admiral T'vess wasn't as in control as many would believe. We don't know what's going on in orbit. We only receive shipments from Admiral JVal's shuttle craft, we would directly beam Admiral T'vesses supply to his quarters and keep the rest. This farm to our knowledge had been abandoned for years now and the Cardassians (a pause) chose to reside in the mountains near the food supplies. We haven't monitored the area much until we researched the path of these rebels.

Captain Salas and Commander Vesna's communicators chirped simultaneously, the Romulan left the room to respond so Ray kept an eye out and answered the call from the Richthofen. The strong feminine voice of Lt. Cho'arie came through Captain we are arriving at the farm, is everything alright? Raymundo wasn't sure why the Commander rushed him to this house, so he looked through the window watching Romulan guards standing watch over the small Cardassian group. Jevak didn't look happy, but was having his team eating rations. The rest of the gear was spread out in a second area and being searched by another group. They're fine so far, but consolidate the groups outside of the area until we figure this out. The captain cut off his communications to prevent any tracking from unwanted eavesdroppers and began to walk slowly towards the room which Commander Vesna entered. As he approached he could hear some of Vesna's directives to her staff. Make sure the guards know, only I'm authorized to speak with the Starfleet officers any inquiries should be directed back to me. There was a slight creek from the floor, everyone in the house froze for a moment and the Commander cut off the signal.

    CARDASSIAN SPACE USS ARCHANGEL

The more Commander Telru and the crew investigated, the more the Andorian didn't like what was forming. They found tachyon particles and a very weak warp signature similar to those used by the old Dominion Attack ships, but Telru thought it was a little too easy and if these ships had only been seen when last reported there should have been no trace at all.

The traces led the Archangel to the Badlands, but with the amount of time Telru had gone without communications with the Captain chose to return to UMOTH PRIME. It seemed every step brought on more complexities; he figured the Romulan ships were cloacked again as there were no visual traces of any traffic. Sensors didn't pick up cloaking, but did discover a new wrench to throw into the pile...more tachyon particles and a fresh warp signature identified as a Jem Hadar attack ship.

Scans of the surface, located a sector with human, cardassian, and romulan signatures. This wasn't good..but it reminded the Andorian of an operation him and Ray were on and was hoping the Captain was remembering the same thing. Telru looked at the time, if Captain Salas was thinking of Operation Majestic then contact by the Captain would be made in about an hour. Maintain orbit and keep a close look out for any communications from the Captain. Now we wait for a call.

    Lt Shihab Alem
    Lt Cho'arie
    Cardassian Civilian Refugees

Umoth Prim: foothills overlooking the farm.

Cho steeped off the Richthofen into the noonday sun and walked over to where Lt Shihab was Helping the organization of the groups till they could find a way to get everyone to the tunnels, now guarded by the Romulan patrols. As Cho walked up to them the oldest of the bunch stood up and turned to watch her approach.

"Chip, I just spoke with the Captain, he and the last of the Cardassians are at the Farm below......we need to do somthing." She said looking toward the farm with a slight downward turn of the lip.

"So he told us to hold fast?" Said the Cardassian standing with Shihab, he smirked at the flash of annoyance in Cho'aries eyes and introduced himself. "I am Revok, former leader of the Council of Merchants of Umoth Prim.....and new village elder." he did not look that old to Cho, mid 50's with wings of gray in his close cut ebony hair, like the rest of the Cardassians he showed the look of having lived out in cave huts for the last few years and the last few days hard march though the mountain pass had put oppressed stance in the way he carried himself. Not a defeated stance, but only holding on, hoping for that break to lay down his load.

Looking around Cho was taken to her childhood, sitting on her mothers knee listing to her grandmother tell of fleeing Bajor during the occupation and life in the camps, of how she struggled to support herself and her son, Cho's father. (OHer Grandmothers first husband being caught and executed during the flight from Bajo)r. she had been practicing as a Midwife, when her Grandfather meet her, a young Betazed Doctor volunteering in the camps.

Cho knew that her and her family were fortunate, and she felt....guilty, guilty for her feeling happy when things like this could still happen in the Galaxy and hidden in that..anger, anger at the Romulans and let the pa'wreath take there eyes she was going to make them pay.

    NO

No, she was a doctor, she was needed here, with the people that badly needed some comfort and heeling.

    *SNAP CHO! *SNAP *SNAP CHO!

"What!" she snapped looking up at Shihab.

"Just waiting for your mind to beam back to the here and now, as I was saying to Revok and you Mitsuko is reporting that the Archangel is entering back into orbit, we need to fill the Commander in on the situation.

    UMOTH PRIME ORBIT USS ARCHANGEL

Commander Telru's antennae were twitching nervously as the time approached to share status reports. The hour was spent silently thinking of the various aspects taking place; none of which made sense to the experienced combat veteran. The other bridge officers seems to have faded out of his perception although they continued taking readings and testing theories of the sector. When Mitsuko appeared on the bridge; Commander Telru communications with Lieutenant Alem being patched in now The Commander jumped slightly in surprise as a hand gripped onto his shoulder bringing him back to the present. Leiutenant Commander Holt stood next to him; Go ahead Mitsuko, patch it to the ready room. Mac knelt down next to the Andorian and whispered; I've found something the Captain needs to know. Telru looked at him inquisitively wondering what contraption or upgrade the Engineer made this time.

    UMOTH PRIME PLANET (LT. ALEM)

Chip looked at Mitsuko jokingly; What is it today, everyone become Borg or something? Everyone seems to be in the Gamma Quadrant on me. The joke was lost to the hologram and she took the comment seriously Scanning the sector there is a 0.001 percent chance of a Borg entering the sector all life signs on the Archangel are confirmed humonoids or living matter. Chip just looked at her, how could that joke not have processed her microchip.

Mitsuko paused; Lieutenant, the Commander would like the meeting in the Richthofen. Now that was new, what could that blue skinned ice cube want to meet privately for..there must be something more than just reporting the group's status now. As he helped Cho up from her kneeling position Well, lets get to it.

The two officers began heading to the fighter when Revok began walking as if to join them. Lieutenant, as I'm the defacto leader of the Cardassians and this situation seems to have snared us into it's trap; I'd like to join you in the meeting. Elam looked at him for a moment, the expression on Revok's face showed concern yet with a determination to help in whatever fashion possible. Mitsuko ask Commander Telru if it is o.k. for us to bring a visitor

    UMOTH PRIME MEETING

Telru sat at the head of the table with Mac and Pappy beside him. In the Richthofen a very dusty group and a middle aged Cardassian. The Commander looked at Chip with his usual stern demeanor Lieutenant, what is the status on the planet and what is going on with the Captain?

Chip thought not even a hello how are you? Just like the Andorian, always serious and direct. Well sir, it seems that the Captain has become a guest of the Romulans. He is inside of the house with their leader, so the best we can gather is he is alive and Mitsuko makes regular checks on his vitals so he isn't being tortured or poisoned..yet. Mac and Pappy grinned for a moment, but the prototypical serious atmosphere around Commander Telru remained. We are maintaining oversight on your group, what is the status and are there any requirements needed for the colonists?

Lieutenant Cho cut in We're fine, we've got tarps being set up for shelter. We'll need rations as the Richthofen wasn't set up for Humanitarian aid. We'll need supplies of water and salt tablets. Now, what are we going to do about the Captain? Everyone just stared at the medical officer and her reddened cheeks with gritting fangs like a little Klingon Targ foaming for a fight. Telru looked at her, Lieutenant what do you suggest, there are three dozen heavily armed Romulans around the Captain; You have two phasers and a population filled with undernourished, unarmed civilians; we have unknown number of warships cloaked in our area. Everyone knew the Commander was right although his response a little to harsh. Then the Cardassian stepped forward and spoke; Commander, my name is Revok the senior of this group now. If I may ask, have you ever had the pleasure of enjoying Cardassian hospitality? if so, have you ever played Kotra

Before anyone could answer, Cho snapped again with everything going on, you want to talk about a game? This isn't a game Revok and I don't know why we let you join us? The Starfleet officers were stunned and the already aggitated Commander''s antennae began to twitch like the tail of a Diamond back rattler back on earth. Yet Revok maintained his compossure. I have murmurred Pappy, and the game is better strategic training than many can imagine.

Revok smiled at the comment; Yes, and it is a game that favors the bold. We are seeing the board being set up as we speak. We know the terrain, We know the objective, now we just have to find all of the pieces before we begin. Now Mac chimed in And I may have found another piece.

While we were waiting for the meeting, I found another Jem Hadar signal approaching the planet. Telru turned his head and straightened up at the comment, why didn't the Engineer mention this before? I of course waited long enough to confirm this and a couple interesting discoveries. The signal came from one of the Romulan's shuttle craft transporting cargo to the surface and it delivered its cargo in the main city.

    Umoth Prim Farmstead

Commander Vensa walked back into the room and retook her seat. the two officers siped their respective drinks till they were gone and after some small talk about greater glaaitic politics the Captain said, "how bout we take a walk around and get to the bottom of these mysterious shipments" he stepped into the afternoon sun and walked to where Javek and the others were being guarded. One of the guards stepped to block his path, although he did not raise his weapon, he would not with his Commanding officer only a few meters away; stepped aside.

"Enjoy your tea?" Javek asked, not without a tinge of anger in his voice. "Everyone doing OK?" Ray asked

Javek gave a half laugh, "we've been given water, and some rations, but I've been better."

Captain Salas turned and walked back toward Commander Vensa and said "give me another hour and well get this all strait" as he walked up to her he asked, "Now i really do need to see some hard proof or I'm afraid I'm going to have take a leaf out of my glassier of a first officers playbook and get tough."

"I of course waited long enough to confirm this and a couple interesting discoveries. The signal came from one of the Romulans shuttle craft transporting cargo to the surface and it delivered its cargo in the main city." The Engineer stated bringing up his readings on the monitor. " there is a warehouse slash processing factory on the North side of the city. However it Is heavily fortified” The Heavy Set Lieutenant Commander brought up a map of the area in question. “I am also reading many Romulan patrols guarding the perimeter. Now the main warehouse is shielded form scans but there are many emissions that I believe are tale tail signs of Old Dominion design.”

Shihab looked at his Commander in the monitor and said, “There are many was to approach this, one we could beam in a small party and gather intel, or recon in force. But if we are caught the Captains life and the other Cardassians are in danger. Will have to rescue the captain at the same time that we do this.” He drummed his fingers one the table for a moment And looked up and smiled at the Commander. “We could do a Dust off with the Richthofen, and meet the main away team at the factory.”

“I do see one problem with your plan Lieutenant” The Andorian said, once the Romulans are on the defensive, I know of at least one D'dredrex class warbird in the area and most likely more, and two as of yet unknown Jem`Hadar attack ships. As soon as our shields drop to beam a strike team to the factory we will be exposed. And wont be able to support them, I am not prepared to send men to battle unsupported.”

Mitsuko spoke up, “I am detecting that the captain has left the main farm house and is on the move”

    UMOTH PRIME CPT SALAS

Commander Vesna turned away from the group and began walking towards the barn. Ray stepped up his pace to catch up with the slim Romulan female. So, you show compassion for them Vesna remarked continuing to walk in at a Soldier's pace. Raymundo quickly responded I admire them and until we prove their guilt we should demonstrate a level of respect for the native population.

the remaining paces to the farm house were quiet, giving the Captain a moment of reflection regarding the general attitude which the Romulans had towards a species which was so similar in many aspects and yet drastically different in others. The two leaders approached the barn door as guards opened the rotting wooden walls to reveal more rot from wet and spoiled hay. Jem Hadar rifles lined up along the ground in the center of the barn and several stalls obviously cleared out by the Romulan investigators.

Vesna pointed to three stalls which appeared as though nothing had been done to investigate. I instructed the guards to stop once these weapons were discovered, we didn't want to corrupt any further evidence which you may come across. Ray thought to himself, awkward but maybe that is the Romulan way; he began to walk through the barn house and view the entire scene before touching anything.
He noticed a small notch in a corner which he assumed was the mark for where the secret door on the floor was located, but walked past as not to alert the surrounding Romulans which were watching his every move.

One stall looked out of sort to Ray, nothing glaringly obvious but deep down his gut called for him to check it out. As Ray approached the area, he noticed that his boots sank a little deeper in areas which gathered more water seeping through the stitches along the sole of his boots. Still he said nothing; and the pile of hay which he approached now became more obvious to his experienced eyes at inspecting the most minute details.

He noticed the lower half of the hay was wet as with the top of the pile..this was normal as weather would hit the top first and settle at the bottom. Yet, as he dug through the hay; he noticed the heavy dampness in the center of the pile which would in most cases have been protected from such conditions.
A Romulan guard moved quickly up to the Starfleet Captain; What did you find? pulling the hay in handfuls out of the stall to reveal two containers with markings of KW2.

Now Ray knew this was not going to be an easy case...KW2 was the Jem Hadar lifeforce Ketracel White.

Captain Salas opened the container to find that indeed it did contain many vile's. Commander Vessna walked up to where the Captain and the solder were standing holding a kirtchif to her nose. "Commander", Ray said picking up and tossing a vile to the Romulan and laughed inside where none could hear as Vessna tried to catch it and keep the cloth pressed to her nose.

"The Cardassians my be the lesser of your worrys, It seams that Jem`Hadar are present and if my training prepared me for anything about them its that they wont be too far form these catches"

UMOTH PRIME ORBIT: USS ARCH ANGEL

The meeting had been completed for hours, yet Commander Telru remained in the Captain's Conference room. It was clear to the senior officers that Telru was angry, but never to this extent. Mac and Pappy returned to their sections trying to fix the destination of the signals.

Commander Holt pounded on the panel None of this makes sense, first why would Romulans be transporting Jem Hadar equipment? Why here? and if this is in fact Jem Hadar forces, why would they be brought to a Romulan Compound here rather than the home world? Pappy just shook his head, I don't know. but I think I've found where they stopped at. The science officer pointed to a large manse within the Colony. Mac looked at the layout of the building and then to the Ensign; Let me guess, that isn't the cargo hold.

UMOTH PRIME PLANET; LT. ELAM AND COLONISTS

Revok spent the afternoon standing on the ridge looking at the farm house, until Lt Alem walked up. Still playing Kotra? Revok continued to stand silently as if in a state of meditation. Chip saw the Captaiin do it before, in his quarters when things weren't making sense.

After a few moments Revok turned to Chip Yes, I apologize for not responding..the pieces to this game are very The Cardassian paused What? asked the security officer. Revok looked to the sky, clouded with dust and thick blackened clouds. We are facing a Kotra master I am certain and we have failed to identify the true attack. Everyone here sees different clues, we have different strategies,

we are all bickering, yet one thing we all agree on is that what we are seeing doesn't make sense. The Cardassian Kotra players call it the Straufmek. Chip looked interested So, what are we missing? Revok smiled That is the true question my boy, lucky for Starfleet and the fellow Colonists... I am a Kotra Master as well.

    Main Engineering : USS Archangel

"Busard Collectors?" The Heavy seat man said looking at the Ensign handing him a report back in main engineering. "Yes Sir, They are due for their bimonthly cleansing and inspection."

"Look son, I appreciate you keeping on top of your work but if we flush the Collectors then our sensors would be blinded for ....," He paused and furrowed his brow.

"Only a matter of minuets while it dissipated."

"Hot DAMN," the Ensign was startled by his Chiefs outburst. as Mac slapped his knee and garbed the pad out of his hand and headed to the turbolift.

"SIR?" the Ensign shouted after him.

"Get ready for the order to follow through in a hour, good job"

Telru was tired, his shift ending nearly 2 hours ago and him planing to catch some sleep while he could. Not that he was angry at his Chief Engineer, his plan was solid but it also was a big gamble.

"Mr. Holt, I think you have come up with a great plan, Flushing the Busard Collectors will mask any singles form this ship for a few seconds while we beam a team into the manor." Telru drummed his fingers on the table for a second and said, "get a report though Mitsuko, have Lt Shihab ready to drop in and grab the captain while the Romulans are distracted.

"Aye Sir." Mac said and walked out to make preparations.

    UPDATED 4/16/12 USS ARCH-ANGEL

Commander Telru sat in the Captain's office shuffling reports. He hated the fact that Captain Salas was still involved on the Planet. The newest status reports from Cardassian space was perplexing to say the least. A raid of an abandoned Ketracel White plant on Andarak Prime, an assassination of a Cardassian diplomat on Pentath III, and a missing cargo vessel from the Cestis system.

So far the evidence pointed to Jem Hadar attacking areas in Federation control. In Cestis, a Jem Hadar shuttle left behind or at least Jem Hadar equipment. In Pentath III Jem Hadar sniper rifles and of course the Ketracel White plant. Yet, Telru was concerned; the Jem Hadar are as much an honorable warrior species as the Klingons and wouldn't resort to assassinations.

Reports indicated that 6 of the Cardassian Defense Force and three Federation cruisers were hunting for the missing cargo ship, three CDF ships searching for the assassin, and four CDF ships along with the remaining 4 Federation ships trying to find the raiders of the plant. The borders are extremely thin and even a Borg fleet could sneak through in this state.
