Read more about the new Ferengi Lock Box in Season 5 Dev Blog #39 and in the new FAQ. Also, purchase a Master Key from the C-Store today to unlock one and claim its contents.
Well at least with the Ferengi we know it's a shameless ploy to get a quick buck. The Lobi crystal store thing though is just wrong. When a game that's devoted to customization makes participation in a a lottery mandatory to unlock all customizations it's kinda sad. I'm not mad about it I just feel like I should pity Cryptic at this point.
EDIT: It's like they knew no one was going to go for it just for the ship so they had to make it compromise the game at a more basic level with item sets, customization options, etc. A lottery box by itself is one thing, kinda cool I guess, but an entire new currency system based solely off of opening a lock box? Get real.
Themed Skirts. Federation and Klingon Empire female characters will look exceptionally classy in these new skirts. The skirts are Ferengi-styled for Federation female officers and Klingon-themed for KDF female officers.
Oh yeah this is going to go over well.
Klingons have been asking for skirts for how long now and to get them you have to pay for them....I'm getting my popcorn ready for this one.
Maybe a few hotdogs to cook over the flames that are sure to come.

yeah seriously. I thought the first one was bad.. they actually managed to make the 2nd one full of even more useless junk AND add a whole new set of content ONLY available by spamming key purchases.
I wouldn't mind paying for the option if I KNEW I was going to get it.
yeah Cryptic is seriously on the gamble wagon with their new business model. I kept holding out hope that they would make the next set of boxes more fair with less of a chase gimmick, but they are full on 100% "eff you buddy" to anyone who doesn't like to just totally gamble. I DEFINITELY didn't intend to buy a lifetime for a casino game.
actually I am a little confused on the "Lobi crystal" thing. I had assumed the Ferengi Lock Boxes would work exactly like the Cardi boxes. Manly, that they were for a limited time. However, the Lobi Crystal Consortium store sounds like it is a new and on going addition.
Hopefully it will all be cleared up in the FAQ release tomorrow.
Lobi crystals?? Really? So we went to dilithium to consolidate currecny because there were too many currecnies, and now you're adding another currecny into the game that can only be gotten out of a chance box?? This is the WORST idea you people have come up with since F2P!
I honestly hope you come up with an in-game way to get these crystals. Actually I would really prefer if you stuck to your original statement of reducing the numbers of currencies in the game and just switched these items to latinum purchases.
As someone who has been waiting for a D'Kora for a long time to go with my Ferengi, I am sad.
All that smoke and mirrors about latinum store . Who wants to bet most of the suggestions for the latinum store thread suddenly end up in the Lobi Crystal store.

I think the real point was to make more $$$.
My cynicism is straight but true I'm sorry to say.
While not as disturbed as other posters, I must vehemently disagree with the plan to have an entire currency only be awarded via these boxes and still not even be a sure thing.
-Add the crystals as a reward for the Ferengi dailies as well in Beta Ursae and Eta Eridani as well to open up gameplay methods.
These lockboxes are even worse than the last ones. Pay real money to open a box, to hopefully get some new currency that you'll have to save up by opening up many more boxes, just to get something else from a vendor in-game. I was already contemplating quitting because of how much of a waste of time STFs are due to the terribly low drop rates, and now this is pushing me even further out the door.
Seriously. I would pay cold hard cash for any of these, especially the appearance ones. But I will not pay for the random chance to earn a currency that may or may not be enough to actually afford said items, thus requiring me to open more boxes and hope that I get this currency.
EDIT: I hope you'll take a hint from Champions in this regard which had the decency to release a C-Store variant on there grab bag stuff.

The "we have too many currencies" was just PR-speak. Dilithium was put in place to monetize as much of the game as possible.
In regards to the latest cash grab:
The continued inability to produce new missions (seriously, devs, just use the foundry for frak's sake), coupled with the incompetent attempts to "balance" the game has ensured that you will be getting no money from this player.
Sadly, though, there are enough dopes playing this game that will gladly fork over the money. So I guess there's no real point to this post. Enjoy your cash infusion, Cryptic. And maybe use it to, I don't know, make missions?
I don't really have anything against the concept of lockboxes. It's sort of cool for some people if they want to gamble now and again. However what is just mindbogglingly bemusing is creating a new item store that only accepts currency that is only found in what is essentially a space slot machine. Creating yet another currency just seems silly when gold pressed latinum, a currency already widely associated with the Ferengi, is mostly sitting idle.
Despite all this and my being a terribly obsessed with collecting items sets I will probably end up buying a few keys.
Wow that's a lot of stuff to collect for the obsessive STO player. On the bright side any player buying tons of boxes to get the ship will have more stuff to collect and won't be stuck with 50 DS9 uniform boxes they can't use. Damn shame the lobi crystals can't be picked up off the exchange.
That pretty much forces folks to buy keys off the exchange if they refuse to spend Cstore points on keys.

When all the money we spend on this is going to translate in real content?

Wow Cryptic.. this a whole new low, holy TRIBBLE.

First off, one big item and a bunch of TRIBBLE, that's standard fare, it's still terrible, but it's standard.
Secondly, you expect us to buy keys, to open boxes, to get currency, to get other items..?
I am truly disappointed.

Anyone else find it kind of weird/funny/wrong that they have ferengi styled skirts? CLOTHES for FE-males???

then you get somewhat happy customers and profit.

If they keep churning these out at the rate they are, Spacedock will be filled with nothing but novelty trash.
