This is now the OOC - Out of Character thread for "The Gateway" RPG

the In Character thread is Here

A week from today is Friday the 13th, a perfect day to curl up on the couch and watch that classic Horror movie marathon. For this day i want to do something different. A Horror themed Play by Post RP sound like a good time for all.

This is a sign up thread to see if there is any interest in this. I will reveal more of the plot as next Friday looms closer but for now ill give you this tease

You revive orders to investigate a privately funded research facility that has been working on various contracts for Starfleet. However the station has gone dark and you have been ordered to assess the situation and reestablish contact with the science team.

Now some ground rules, due to the rules of the board we will keep it PG-13. Also all skill levels of writing are welcome but each post has to follow two rules. One it must advance the plot in some sense and second must be at least a paragraph. Why a paragraph? it make you think more about what you are doing in the story, and second if writing a paragraph is too much a Forum RP game may not be for you.

I will be happy to help anyone who asks and anyone who wishes to help is welcome as well.

As far as organization is concerned it is up to you as players, one you can be the captain of your own ships in which case your are working as a task force. in this though you must have established NPC's BOFF's that you will post with your BIO

or you may play as members on the same ship. in which case you must agree to how the ship is organized

Any Takers?

    Ive got a lot of Open RPs in WoW and such under my belt and it'd be good to see one like that for STO, my question is, if you are going to make people sign up, do you plan on making a template? A template would make selecting things a lot easier.

    Also, what restrictions are there going to be (apart from the obvious)? Is there a limit to how many Boffs you can incorporate in certain scenarios (to avoid people bringing armies with them) etc etc? If you can get something like that I'd be pretty interested.

    I'd be playing on my own ship, but I would have no objection to other people playing different roles on the same ship, or even someone wanting to take a position on my ship, but you have to clear it with me first as my Boffs take a lot of important positions and I'd prefer to not have them overwritten.

    id say the MAX would be 7, the postings on your ship would be

    Captain <=you
    First Officer
    Chief Engineer
    Chief Medical Officer
    Chief Science Officer
    Chief of Security/Chief Tactical Officer
    Operations Officer
    Universal (Helm, Consular, Guest Official)

    The only template that I can think of is that one would have to be a Starfleet Officer

    Rank<=Captain
    Name<=
    Speices<=
    Phycial<=
    Characteristics<=

    Ship Name<=
    Class<=
    Brief Tech layout<=

    BOFF's

    Name<=
    Rank/Posting<=
    Species <=
    Physical<=
    Characteristics<=

    Do note that your BOFF must be described in your BIO, and i would like to see at least two traits that they are known for and one negative trait they are know for. after all with out a little dysfunction what fun is there lol ;)

    Well have to be careful of god-modding but NPC's are kind of a gray area. you cant directly control another Players NPC's, least with out permission in the Out of Character thread. but you can use them in minor ways so long as its in a limited capacity

    I myself will, as the GM, Make a number of NPC that you the players will be free to use at your will.

    Count me in.

    This is a rare opportunity for me to exercise some unused literacy interests that I've been yearning to unleash for a very long time now.

    Despite collaborative writing efforts being few and far between (outside of formal Literacy Challenges or private RP guilds) I've been penning down my character's thoughts for several months now as she interacts with and progresses in the STO world and its worldwide playerbase.

    The character bio below is slightly outdated as it doesn't have a narrative covering STF lore yet but that's in the works too.

    Character Background - Fredegonde Valmy (Updated as at Mar 2012)
    Omega Force Academy Introductions (STF Lore used to teach new players and Fleets on STF competencies and backstory).

    I also produce video logs as per my signature.

    That said I have a habit of playing only one toon and developing her to the maximum possible - in this case it's up to your discretion if my style and writing interests (notice a lot of RL naval jargon tossed in) suit your storyline.

    As for godmodding you will see no such nonsense from me. I'm a rather submissive personality and I am happy to follow competent leadership.

    I only get riled when there's any sort of inactivity or not being communicated to (which affects mission completion - I don't like silence!)

    I would like to start this Friday afternoon. please don't feel intimidated. its a lot of fun. :D
    Tease #2

    Priority one message form Starfleet Command.

    Admiral QuIn: I wish that it were under a better condition that I am contacting you. However Starfleet finds itself needing skilled officers to form a task force to investigate research facility Harmony Station. It is operated by a conglomeration of corporations that pool there resources to advance technologies for the Federation. At present there is a Starfleet sanctioned think-tank working on the Undine problem. Sorry that I can not go into further details but it is highly classified. 12 hours ago Harmony Station went dark and we have lost all contact with the scientist inside.

    Your current orders are to proceed to Harmony Station in the Risa Sector and reestablish, and if necessary regain control of the faculty.

    A detailed listing of the Stations layout and last know status will be messaged to you upon arrival. Admiral Quin out.

    @carmenara, I have the bio for your captain but i would also like a list of your NPC's your bringing. If you can drag people to fill the roles of those NPC's that would be awesome but if not its okay.

    I could always 'recruit' some Cardassians but I am not sure if they are experienced enough in fast-paced RP to be a match for me.

    I will also likely be deploying one single character for quality control purposes, if that's fine. If I had it my way she'd be a non-combatant 'foreign advisor' but as it goes in STO but as it stands I am rather annoyed about being called "Admiral".

    cc. Cardassians.

    My dear Cardassian cannot even type. He flies his Galaxy-X with a laptop keyboard comprised of duct tape and peanut shells.

    I have no idea how he flew STFs with me last weekend :D

    ps. Typical violent Cardassian humor in this post.

    As for being a one person army well. I can always bring Redshirts Unlimited!

    Well this is suppose to be a Horror story, so having some people that i can.....find interesting ways to kill. would be advisable. Note that im making some of my own NPC's to fill that purpose but the more the merrier.

    I think the Cardies would love the sound of that. Me no, I don't like the death and destruction. Unless its Borg being mutilated :D

    Whatever the turnout we should be thankful there are still talented RPers / GMers / writers willing to host public events for us.

    Creativity and in-character interaction need not be secluded into mysterious guilds practising their arts in secrecy. I for one, look forward to participating in this endeavour :3

    Nador, good to see you back in action. maybe one day we can finish our last RP, you know when your rig is not on the verge of self destruct.

    Also Carmenaras character is hardly the standard Federation Captain type form the bio i read. If i could make a suggestion why not be on her ship. Say as a political attache` on route to ESD when diverted to the Risa Sector. That way one we don't have to worry about a Cardassian ship investigating a Federation Starbase. And second you two will be more easily able to bounce dialog off each other making for more dramatic story.

    Just a thought

    I finally finished the gauntlet of 1,200 Soldiers returning from Combat. May be next Monday will be a good start. One hint for your Captain though....It isn't exactly what your thinking....Cardassians wouldn't make things THAT Obvious.:D

    If there's going to be a joint-ship activity for the transit to Harmony between me and... some Cardassian, then I propose we can start writing our scene as early as Cardies can type on their peanut and duct tape keyboards. I will transmit scene details via secure channel.

    Hint for nador - What do these terms mean to you (2 and 3 will be used to produce 1 for my/our fanfic):

    1. "Quantum slipstreaming captive carry transit"
    2. "Lyran pseudo-fighter"
    3. "Sensor shadow"

    Secondly, you have about... 1 day, to get ready a Galor class vessel for said project.

    --

    The more content we produce to fluff up your thread, the better, seeing as there is a low possibilty of further external contributions at this point. As they say, quality > quantity.

    1. do you mean like prisoner transport?
    2. Lyran, that is a name i have not herd in a long time. Good ol SFC. this will be mostly ground based so i do not know if fighters will be necessary.
    3. Is this a way to through off a enemy? Kind of like the holo shadow that the Rode Island has?

    what do you mean of 'get ready a Galor Class'?

    I've got my GM notes arranged, i'm not a big fan of railroading a player just for the sake of story. i have a few outcome arranged but i myself don't know how this will end. You will win and defeat me just because that is the nature of the game but my favorite part of GM'ing is making players think of how to do it. :D

    Ahhh. You Federation are always concerned when I crash your party :D

    My writeup yesterday was more for Gul Nador's benefit than anything else. You know how we Cardassians need some friendly threats and challenges in order to build a trusting working relationship.

    I also wanted to make his little trip to Harmony Station in his duct-tape and peanut-encrusted Galor a bit more interesting than just clunking along at Warp 3.5. So I thought to do an experiment to attach the Galor to the secondary hull of a Starfleet BCE (ship background backstory fluff to follow) by use of a gravitic anchor... then activate the quantum slipstream drive and see if it still sticks at Warp 35 :D

    A Galor class destroyer is not exactly as small as a Lyran PF but given the sheer size of a star cruiser, and the fact that I can tow away 3-5 Borg Spheres simultaneously for about 20km with TBR1 + EM3... does make a Galor look rather tiny compared to Starfleet's current graviton generator tech.

    The way I do things, I don't just magically appear at the RP venue without some sort of background... which does not affect your established GMing but rather enhances it.

    Don't get me wrong. I'm not exactly alien to Gul Nador in-character. Infact we work very well together on the Allied Reconstruction Project for the past month or so despite unwanted interference from passing Federation fleets, and are active in the same theatre of operations.

    You should see the REM command console on his 'borrowed' Federation Galaxy-X in last week's STF exercise.

    There were so many peanut shells on the console used in place of LCARs keys, my crew mistaken it for a Cardassian portrait.

    EDIT:

    This is the Great Peanut Monument Gul Nador erected on Cardassia to commemorate his peanut-keyed victory in Infected Space STF.

    dont worry about not being none Fed, well make it work.

    but there are so few of us for the RP community that some character story flexibility will be necessary so we can do a variably of story's. but that is for another day as we have this one to play.

    My primary computer blew up during an electrical storm. Yes two surge protectors (or so called surge protectors failed and fried as well). I am now relegated to a very old laptop with very small keys and a mouse pad (which slows me down and makes it easy to hit the wrong button or overdo it. That's the consequence of using EPS to directly power computer systems; a key weakness of Federation technology. On certain vessels improper field installations of EPS capacitors to boost flowrate may overload the capacity of surge protectors (for reference, a typical "blue" Mark XI EPS power booster provides a 35% power transfer rate.)

    Cardassian systems by contrast are far more robust; crew consoles are physically separated from hi-powered systems and thus operators are at no risk from infamous 'console explosions'.
