Hello all! This post is for those of us who roleplay within Star Trek Online, and how we play our characters. If you somehow thought it was about something else, then sorry! These arnt the droids you are looking for.
So I've been looking around some of the RP fleets still active in STO, and done a bit of thinking on my own character and how I'd roleplay her, when a few thoughts hit me:
Star Trek Online sets each of us up as the Captain of our very own starship. That's a pretty high rank to get right from the get-go, and when I last RP'ed most seemed more then happy to run with it.
But now, fairly often, I see fleets and communities roleplaying on one or two ships, each led by one captain with the other members as acting as subordinates, chief or even petty officers. Now it's caused me to wonder: How many people actually play their characters as captains these days?
It is what the game tells us we are, and I imagine when we first dreamt up our character most would first think of a Starfleet Captain. But I can totally see the appeal in roleplaying on one ship in an Enterprise-like setting, and can imagine why some might give our characters a demotion or two to fit in there.
So, what do you think is more common nowadays, and wich of the two is your character?A Captain, or a Subordinate?
I enjoy play by post RP, in fact i enjoy it at times more than the game its self and would like to help buff/rebuild the RP community on these boards.
Call me a madman but i enjoy playing an entire crew and having them interact with each other and the plot at large (playing as one person on a crew never excited to me) what if your at the CONN you only speak if the captain says turn or if enter/leave orbit. or the CMO. sometimes I've wanted to shoot someone so I had something to do.
Captain. I will be friendly and social and work with others and such, and take advisement and coordination from someone who knows a situation better than I do. But no way am I taking orders from someone because they've decided their imaginary rank gives them the right to do so. My ship, my crew.
I am in an RP fleet on each side of the wall, and I play both types of characters. It's harder to play subordinate characters, but it makes any RP more multidimensional. In my Fed fleet there is a pretty rigid rank structure for characters. Only a few are able to play as admirals and wear commensurate uniforms, everybody else must be captain or lower. Quite a few either opt to be subordinates (or have alts for it) to other captains.
I'm not sure whether I like one or the other better. My favorite char is in command on the KDF side, but my favorite Fed char is a lowly Lt. RP-wise. I suppose Fed subordinates are better off (if less interesting) in that they are far less likely to be abused the way KDF subordinates are open to.
The RP Fleet I'm in takes a bit from the official progression and its explanation (Any rank because of special deed X gets command of ship Y because of the troubled times) if a char wants to represent a lower rank then captain. We are usually proud of our Boff creations and don't want to take their jobs away
I played my character as a captain aswell, but I'm actually not sure how to play her when I'l be returning after my vacation. Once you peg a character as a captain it seems to me it'd be darned difficult to play on an RP ship as, say a Commander. That's the dilemma I am facing at the moment.
