Blocky Flickering Shadows

Hi all,

I'm experiencing really bad shadows, I know a few threads also talk about this, however I would like to share with you a video showing exactly whats going on:

When viewing please select "Original" for best quality...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9NYJ3uUqTM&feature=youtu.be

My pc:

Win 7 64bit
SLI nvidia 480GTX (296.10)

Just an update really after a little research, it seems that the same issue was found in Skyrim.. a work around for this was to set the following parameters in the .ini file:

iBlurDeferredShadowMask=7
fShadowDistance=3000.0000
iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=4096
iShadowMapResolution=8192
iShadowMaskQuarter=10

Star Trek however doesn't have these options in their prefs, but must be adjusted elsewhere, I do not know.
But the Shadowmap Resolution / Distance is definitely the problem.

Please can any other nvidia users either confirm they do or do not have this same issue

Many Thanks

Xoranium

    I have an AMD graphics card so not really all that familiar with the Nvidia cards but have you tried changing the performance/quality setting for the graphics card itself and seeing if that helps any?

    Thanks for your response Voices,

    I have tried every conceivable scenario, with settings in game and within nvidia.

    I'm pretty sure now this is an issue with the Cryptic game engine's ability to sing on the same hymn sheet as nvidia hardware.

    :(

    one of the Devs said either earlier today or in the past couple of days (my days are all mixed up lately) that they are working on converting and correcting many of the models because of an error with the DX11. It was in one of the threads. I know they use #D Studio Max to create the 3d models so if that's anything like the others I've used they could be in for a real work load if there were conversion issues.

    none of the fixes people have suggested for either Nvidia or AMD cards have worked for you??

    Hi Torlak,

    That thread seems to be a different issue, my textures seem fine in both dx9 and dx11, however as you can seen on the video just the shadows seems to be drawn incorrectly, I would also like to note that even on my character the "flickering aspect" is noticable all be it very subtle, probably due to there being many light sources inside, problems in space are at its most apparent while there is only 1 light source (a star).

    Hi Voices,

    No my friend, no fixes atm. The only way to stop the flickering is to set the shadows to low, I do run in DX11 and the shading (with shadows low) is very good by that i mean the ships hull goes dark when i move and turn and is seemless and very effective, however whilst setting is on low no shadows are cast on my hull via nacelles etc.

    DX11 is the way to go and it pleases me that the devs are working on this because even though only a little of DX11 is available, what you can see is much much better than DX9 both in game speed and visual quality.

    I had this problem for quite a while with my vista 64 pro turns out it was actually windows itself that was my problem. It kept forcing me to use the version of driver it wanted. I had to forcibly remove the driver it kept installing then install the version i needed manually. this is a bit to explain so here are the sites i used to find my solution.

    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx
    http://www.techfuels.com/windows-vista/30617-force-drivers-vista.html

    I have a ati 6790 so the first is from my card. the second is a general info site.

    hope this helps some people if not then it can be we have different problems. like i said it worked for me.

    PS: The game looks Amazing now that i have the right driver.
