Flight Controls: Add 'Roll' to ship.

The game would be much more enjoyable in my opinion if your ship did not auto tilt back to level with horizon. Rotating a ship on its axis should be allowed 180 degrees to each side (as Im aware the game engine cant allow ships to loop...for some reason).

By having this, we could have a lot more flight maneuvers available.

My sample keybind:

ASDW = rotate ship in X and Y axis.
QE = roll ship on its axis.

Without auto-level with horizon (which should be a toggle on/off feature), one could point a ship's nose up and as it flies up you could roll it 180 degrees right and then use the right rotation key (D) to make the ship go down.

Additionally, a 'roll' control bar could be added above or below the ship's speed bar in the interface. This 'bar' would be a preset to have the ship constantly roll to either direction during a series of maneuvers. The auto-roll would not be as hard a roll rate as using the Q and E keys but rather a gently slow, constant roll until the ship reaches the max allowed roll-to position. Using the Q or E keys (manual roll) automatically resets the pre-set to 0 auto roll. Why want this? Because if I want my ship to turn to a side while rolling to have a moebius strip -like flight path, this will allow me to do it..and frees my hand from constantly and spaztically using the Q and E keys. Its like automatic fine control flight.

for this to be even worthy of the devs even considering it, it would have to have some sort of worth while payoff in-game. For it to be worth while they would have to change a good 50% of the in-game engine and atm they are not willing to do this. If you just want it for aesthetic purposes im sorry to say it would take too much effort for not enough of a change in game.

This topic along with adding dorsal and ventral shields (Top and bottom) has been talked about a lot and im sorry to say the devs said they wont incorporate either any time soon

Yes it would still be wonderful to get full pitch yaw and roll on these ships, but for the moment they don't have the time energy or design to do it. I agree though it would be fantastic. Same for dorsal and ventral shields. Lots of people like the idea but its definitely not on the short or medium list. I wouldn't be surprised if some guys in cryptic secretly would like to make it possible, but can't for various technical and financial reasons right now.

change the game engine? The ships already roll on their own. Its merely letting the player do it manually.

Just imagine if this game really was 3D in space. I would love to be able to come at ninety-degree angles above or below enemies.

This thread makes me remember starfox... i cant believe the engine of sto cant mach it.

    Press twice up to loop.

Press twice a side to roll.

Once you start the maneuver you can´t handle the ship until it´s finished.

    Sorry my english...

180* Rotation would allow the opposite side shield facing to come into action faster than turning the whole ship 180*

That and EVE, where the ships have at least the 90 degree pitch.

No, you all misunderstand. Im not asking for loops or barrel rolls. a 90 degree roll to left/right up or down is the max allowed by the flight engine so that is what i want.

Just let us bank the ship manually or in a slow slider control near the throttle.

Over two years and they have not given you that kind of flight, don't expect they ever will. Can the engine handle it? Yes, of course it can, but it's about how they wanted game tactics. STO space combat is very much Star Fleet Command because it works.

Alecto recently locked up a similar thread, though it wasn't asking for 3D flight. People were requesting ship emotes. One of the emotes was Barrel Roll. Another was Wing Wiggle.

Honestly though, all small craft should be able to preform a barrel roll maneuver and all large craft should be able to do a 180 degree emergency turn.

Space combat was based off SFC, time some of it was added.

Well I'd actually love to have the option to "roll" in the game, even just for the animation.
But as it has been statet previously, there is no point in just adding it to the flight control with no actual use for it beside nice looking.

So my idea would be to tie that animation to an ability. May be adding an ensign+-tac power (we still need more of those) that increases you defense while "rolling". (as an ensign power it could obviously be equipt on cruisers and science vessels as well)
