Today is the birthday of the first lady of Star Trek!

Although she is no longer with us, she will always be remembered with love.

I was born in the mid-80s, so really I was late to the Star Trek table by the time i was able to understand what it was all about. However, growing up watching The Next Generation from a young age there was always one guest character who I loved more than any of the other characters, and that was Lwaxana Troi.

Majel always without fail lit up the screen. She was beautiful, strong, witty, and most importantly warm.

When watching Majel and Marina there was never any doubt in my mind that she was Deannas mother. More than that, she played the role so convincingly that I always got the feeling when watching her she was my mother too!

Majels portrayal of Lwaxana will always be one of my favorites in Star Trek, and I will always remember and cherish her because of it.

Star Trek will never be the same without you.

Today is Majels day.

what i remember most is the time she used for her betazoid character, Lwaxana Troi. Chasing after Picard with a perverse delight and Odo a little later. preying on the strong type of men they were and finding out they are nothing more then kittens to her, always brought a smile to my face when i see Picard's head poking out and looking around when he knows Lwaxana is nearby, classic :D.

She always seemd to me like a really nice, charming person - and she did so much for Star Trek.

[ However, I found her character in TNG/DS9 to be REALLY, REALLY annoying, and I always died a little on the inside when I realized "this is going to be a Troy's mom episode". :p ]

I would love it if Cryptic could sample as many of Majels computer phrases as possible and get them in game. Im sure it would mean a lot to the player base and Majels family.

I'd imagine that's governed like likeness rights. We can put in Picard, or Spock or someone. . . but it can't look like the actor who played the character (and thus, not like the character) unless we pay for the right to use their likeness. I'd imagine her voice, even though it was used on the show, is very similar.

But i thought likeness rights didnt apply when the person in question was deceased? Im not suggesting you do it without permission, just thought it would be nice to look into. Could you pass along the suggestion?

    Thank you :)

The definition of likeness rights vary from state to state and from country to country. It's a legal battle best left alone, unless you have clear permission from whomever will fight against you (such as direct decedents or a personal estate) or the person has been deceased for a long time. For example, I think by law in California you retain personality right for 70 years after death, not sure about other states.

Ahh, I dont know how it all works as its completely different in the UK. I wasnt suggesting they do it without permission, they could seek permission from Majels family. I think it would be a really nice touch for the fans and something to honor such an important lady in our beloved franchise!

it wouldnt be too bad, Eugene Roddenberry is the only known direct child between both Majel and Gene, whats more Eugene was involved in TNG and other smaller trek works. if Cryptic had a good case for adding Majel's voice to the game and that it reflects Star Trek francise and CBS quite nicely, it may even convince Eugene to allow Majel's likeness to be added.

When it comes to the idea of adding more sectors to expand the Gamma quadrant on this game, will Nimoy provide his likeness once again?

Majel was in my opinion the Empress of the ST universe.

Well clearly she would be High Empress Lwaxana, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, and Wielder of the Holy Rings of Betazed. :D

Saying that.... Whats the life span for a Betazoid? Could Lwaxana still be alive in 2409?! :D

    Dear Majel,

I will forever know you as Luwoxana Troi. And forever will I be grateful for the comedy you instilled upon the series. I hope that, where ever you are, that you and Gene are planning the next set of Star Trek adventures with Q and the rest of the continuum.

    Thank you.

    -Los

I loved the guest appearance by Majel on Babylon 5 as Emperor Turhan's Seeress wife. One of the outtakes was her walking face first into a doorway. You coudl hear the crew gasp, only to have her turn to them, smiling and say, "Guys, I'm used to it." :p

I think in California, those rights still apply. That said, it may be easier to buy/license/negotiate for a deceased person's likeness because the competing offers aren't rolling in.

Shatner would be difficult because WoW might offer him a ton of money to endorse their game. Doohan's estate, on the other hand, has fewer competing offers and may settle for less, particularly if the use is seen as a tribute to a beloved family member or something that actually elevates Doohan's profile back up in a way that could lead to other deals.

Most of you are probably too young to remember the first lady of Trek debut to the Star Trek series, but I will always remember her as the true:

    #1 of the Starship Enterprise

According to Gene Roddenberry and Stephen Whitfield, the prominence of a woman among the crew of a starship was one of the reasons that the original Star Trek pilot was rejected by NBC, who, in addition to calling the pilot "too cerebral", felt that the alien Spock and a female senior officer would be rejected by audiences, <---Those were the 60's for yah.

She was the first onscreen commander of the Star Ship Enterprise - Its too bad that the times did not coincide with Gene's vision of the future.

    Really? Commander (onscreen)?

What rank etc etc? I was always under the impression she always played an underling-type of some kind along with Diana Muldaur (Dr Pulaski TNG). I thought Uhura was the only one to hold any position of "power" as it were.

Yes. In the first pilot of TOS she played the first officer, credited as Number One I think - after the TV bosses of that time ... I am not repeating everything which has been written a few posts before ... ;o)
She staid as Nurse Chapel - your underling ;) - and oh wonder, the alien (Spock) was allowed to stay and to become first officer even! Possibly because he at least presumably has a dingeling needed to be fit for command ...

You might remember the two episodes with Pike - the not to talkative fellow in the wheel box you communicated by beep and beep-beep for yes and no. Spock was under trial for breeching the quarantine of Talos IV. More then half of these two episodes was a recut of the old pilot, in which the Enterprise, then under command of Cpt. Pike., made first contact with the inhabitants of Talos IV.

amazing how spock shows such disregard to starfleet and complete loyalty to his former captain when he was in need the most. didnt think vulcans can show such affection and they are usually more frozen over then an ice planet in the middle of its own ice age.

back on topic, i remember the times of nurse chapel, but they didnt stand out as well as Lwaxana Troi though, some really memorable moments on trek where Majel stood out best.

Half-Vulcan - and even real Vulcans can get heated up - they have emotions, strong ones! They only subdue them - most of the time and more or less successfully. ;)

    Yeah, back to topic!
I agree, Chapel was seen on screen more often, yet she had not that much of a ... hm ... stage presence shall we say, that Lwaxana had!
