How to TURN OFF Galor spam! READ!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Right click your chat box name and scroll down to " SYSTEM " the yellow box color and click the check area to uncheck it. This will turn off the stupid galor announcements that no one cares about. Hope it helps! :)

it will turn off chat messages of that spam but not the messages shown in the middle of the screen, also will remove other system messages from main chat aswell. But yea there's nothing else right now to turn it off all together, hope cryptic gets some flash of wit here asap~

If I could get rid of the messages going across the middle of my screen I would do it. Nothing seems to work for that, unfortunately.

No. that won't do it. That will turn off the messages in the chat window, not the one that pops up in the middle of the screen. its a system message and as far as I know there is no way to disable a system message in STO.

and I assure you people DO care about them. Just not in a good way

The only workaround that will actually do it is to open up your HUD and hide the notifications window itself, but like it was said earlier you'll see no notifications whatsoever that way. Small price to pay however?

You also won't see those mini-dialogue boxes that sometime pop up during missions (I think you may also get one when you go to thrusters near ESD) and contain important dialogue. They seem to appear in the same place as notifications. Those little things can be hard to read through when they're in the center of your screen.

I'm not sure what the problem is for you guys. It works for me and the messages have completely stopped. Double check the steps just to be sure. Other than that, I don't know why it wouldn't for you guys but it works for me. I tried. :)

    RE: Galtor spam

After some thought on the subject here is what I am doing.
Every time I see one of these notifications in the center of my screen that someone@somewhere has unlocked a Galtor I report that person for spam and here is why.

Every time someone pays to open one of those lockboxes they are gambling that they are going to get something they want, well when they win that ship and the spam goes out they are also gambling that I will see it and report them for spamming since Cryptic/PWE was nice enough to send their account info, so they get two chances to gamble! Double the pleasure, double the fun as the saying goes.

And Cryptic/PWE also get to take part in the fun because they are now gambling that if enough people get angry over being “muzzled” for 24 hours and make a big enough noise about it then people will stop buying those keys and the cash cow goes away…or they could disable the report spam function and the “gold sellers” will be out in force and then STO ends up getting a bad reputation and people start avoiding it, and then the cash cow goes away. Or maybe people make enough noise about their account info being spammed to the whole player base that people start to avoid the game…and then the cash cow goes away.

And Even I get to have some “fun” as well because I get to gamble on if Cryptic/PWE will shut down my account. So you see everybody gets a chance to gamble!

For the record I don’t give a rats backside if Cryptic/PWE want to sell keys for in game items, if you want to waste your money on it that’s your business, I do however care that I am forced to look at this spam in game every time someone gets a ship because some marketing jack@#$ thought it would be a good idea to spam peoples account information without giving me a way to “unsubscribe” from it (save eliminating all system notifications) if I am not interested.

So if you win a ship and find yourself “muzzled” with a 24 hour timeout don't come whining to me about it, send an email to Cryptic/PWE.

    Enjoy.

    Edit:
The point of this exorcise was to draw attention to the problem by showing Cryptic/PWE that their cash cow could be put in danger through player displeasure over their choice to spam account info with these announcements that we can’t unsubscribe from. Think of it as “starving the beast” by removing income.

Askray made a good point about the futility of going about it in this way so I have adjusted my approach to the problem. I’ll just go back to a free silver account until this gets sorted…because I will not give them money to shove spam in my face. They can make plenty of money off these lockbox and key things without having to spam the entire player base. So when the spam is gone, I will re-subscribe and give them money, till then not a penny more from me.

Now if more people do the same, and are clear about why they are doing it then we can get enough attention to get it resolved by “starving the beast” that way.

The spam started because of money, we need to make sure it ends because of money as well or else it’s not likely to go away…ever.

Unfortunately it also turns off your loot notifications so unless you are set to manually loot you have to catch the pop up window above the chatbox to see what you got or open inventory.

I know this thread is old but I found it when looking for a solution to this problem, and I just wanted to throw in a tidbit that doesn't seem to have been mentioned here:

You have to turn off the "system" channel in all of your chat feeds, individually. If you right click on "Chat" and turn off the system channel you'll stop getting the announcements. However, if you then switch to the "NPC" channel, you'll start getting announcements again until you turn off the system channel in that feed, as well.

Hope this helps some future humans!

Thanks. I've been wondering how to do that.

Edit: Oh, it didn't work. Too bad.

as someone who occasionally opens boxes I wanna note I'd rather not see those eaither. how many times do people pull out a galor only to be flooded with offers to buy it?

In before this thread gets locked because some idiot necroed a thread created over 2 years ago.

Click the arrow on the bottom right corner of your mini map and select 'Notification Settings'. At the very top under 'Announcements' uncheck both boxes for 'Gameplay Announcements'. You'll never see a message on screen again when someone gets a very rare ship from a lockbox, which seems to happen every 2 minutes for a couple weeks after a new lock box is released.
