Online gambling and Poor Customer Support

Given how terrible the customer support is and how they are exploiting what is technically a gambling format to extract cash from people I will be ceasing my subscription and no longer purchasing C-points.

This'll mean I lose.....not a lot and hopefully pass a message (however miniscule) to Cryptic.

never thought of it as a gambling format, but makes sense. if i assume your takling about those box things that you can buy with cp, and you may or may not get something from it.

I suggest you just cancel your internet then and never play a online game.

Every game has a lottery style event to it. AVA has their Capsule shop, Combat Arms recently added a Roulette Wheel. Hell, STO here has had Dabo which is like uber Roulette for the longest time. Youre not upset about the gambling aspect otherwise you wouldve left when Dabo was introduced. You're upset for not getting a free lottery ticket.

The event is 100% optional and you dont get anything overpowered or uber from these boxes. TBH, you get better ships from the C-Store and I guarantee the RA ships are just as good.

I really am tired of people wanting free tickets for being a subscriber or a gold member. I also was a subscriber, I bought their deluxe edition when I started. I dont gripe about not getting freebies, I enjoy the game. IF I happen to have a few bucks, sure, I'll throw 6$ their way for a chance to play.

I say good riddance to people like you who want a free ride. Have fun elsewhere.

They aren't the first to do it, but it is a gambling format, and the last game that did it that I played introduced wonderful new things into the game using it as well, and saw a brief surge in cash in-flow, but then saw the last of it's staple customers peel away because we all realized that it was just an online casino with pretty ships and a token mission or two to justify being called a game... That game shut down all of it's servers at the end of 2011 despite having one of the most prominent science fiction brands in the world behind it...

There's a fine line between throwing in money makers to make some cash, and just being a pretty cash vacuum...

I've thrown gobs of money at STO to 'enhance' my experience since before the game was in production... I make good money so I feel no shame in that...

But they crossed that line now in my humble opinion... and I feel like I'm logging into a scam at times...

I don't want to feel like those sad people who spend everything at Tribal Casinos or on lottery tickets for a chance to win something instead of seeking a purpose in their lives... I want to play a Star Trek game.... But I feel like the former is the new target audience, along with kids that really should be saving their money in these times...

I hope they reverse course on this... cause I can afford this money machine only because I'm not gullible enough to fall for it forever...

If it's the game you love then you should be looking at what this format did to the games that embraced it before.... Those games are gone...

Your ironic usage of the phrase "free ride" is noted however...

You did mean that ironically ....since you're the one who's only playing cause it's free now...right?

Say what you want, but selling products on the market with a chance to win or lose is called gambling...
They are called scratch cards... you buy a scratch card and you might win or lose, they have legal regulations behind scratch cards to (obviously) regulate fair behavior... the fact that a video game based on STAR TREK!! (star trek which is based on a universe with no money and where mankind has no need for material possessions etc etc) is promoting a scratch-card based promotion is not cool

who said anything about free tickets??? HAving certain things in a game should be based on how much time and grind you put into a game. not how big your wallet is...

also being tired about people complaining? then your in the wrong part of the forum.

and my last point... "I say good riddance to people like you who want a free ride. Have fun elsewhere???"
well frankly with comments like that no wonder the STO community is raging.

if you my friend are cool with pay2win.... then i suggest you take your compliments to another thread :p

Addressing each part of your post:

-Not every game has a 'lottery' where you pay RL cash for a gamble, not a problem using IG cash for whatever purpose. IG money has no impact upon RL where people (not myself in this case) may have issues with self control and spending.

-The spending of RL money may be optional, yes. However, with the constant spam of Galor unlocks it is actively encouraging the gamble. A kind of..."Look what someone else got! Could you be this lucky?".

-I have no issues with ships being sold to us via c-store, there you get exactly what you pay for. There is no gamble inherent is such transactions.

-I signed up for this game pre-release, stayed with it for ages even when the content was non-existent, and resubbed as soon as I heard they were moving out of that drought. I have paid a good amount in to the c-store for ships/costumes/items. I have not played this game for "free" at any point nor have I expected "freebies".

-I am not leaving this game, simply no longer paying a subscription or paying for c-store items until there is evidence that some of what we, the players, have given to Cryptic is being used for improving the abysmal customer support and hopefully they realise that the gamble boxes aren't the best method for pulling money from us.

Hope this clears things up for you.

The only game that does gambling right is Guild Wars. Everything is either rewarded to the player, earned by completing tasks, or if the player so wishes, buying it from other players who earned it themselves. Nothing is ever bought with real life cash other than the expansions or cosmetic items like costumes, but you see no items that grant players an edge over others.

If this Galor ship was a permanent Cardassian holo emitter instead of a brand new ship it wouldn't be so bad and it'd match the other items in the lock box.

Calling it gambling suggests there is a chance to lose. Since you always win something, it's not gambling!

Sorry to hear that you're disappointed in the game; however "I quit" threads are not allowed, this thread is now closed.

Hope you stick around for updates and return in the future! :)
