OK, I'm mainly shooting this directly out at Cryptic/PWE, but I'm just trying to figure out why, given your usual downtime schedule of 0700 PST, have you switched it to 0000 PST on Fridays? I work overnights and Thursday night and Friday night are my only two nights that I can actively play STO. However, these last 3 weeks you have performed maintenance at a time frame that is FAR earlier than anything else you have typically done. Is there a valid reason for this?
The downtimes also wouldn't be so bad, if they weren't the longest downtimes I have ever experienced. Most games that do server downtimes as frequently, if not more so, as Cryptic can rush it through in 1 Hour max, typically 30 mins and with practically no problems.
Thanks to this, I am now missing out on game play and finding myself with nothing to do for 2 hours when everyone I know is sound asleep and I'm waiting for my gym to open. I realize this probably sounds lame, but it's getting really frustrating. Due to how this week is, I have now finished playing my handful of hours of STO for the entire week because of these early weekend maintenance runs.

Having a backup game is a good idea.
All eggs in one basket is bad. (Unless you grew up on a chicken farm and have a lifelong experience of carrying all eggs in a basket.)

Not quite the response I was hoping for, but still a true answer. If DCUO was actually playable as a lvl 30 DPS, I would probably check back in, but it's not. I was enjoying STO perfectly fine and I'm not particularly interested in playing much else. It's easier for me to focus on one, versus trying to focus on many.

You and most other forumites apparently.
Personally I'm considering moving to the sofa and enjoy myself with a game before starting the day of baking and caking. (Since I obviously can't play sto... although it would probably end in me cursing quite a bit like last night.)
But anyways... They have started having some different times for maintenance to please the masses.
Make one person happy so another is unhappy. That sort of thing.

Which is something I can understand, but like I also said, they could counter this better by improving their maintenance times. There are very few things that could really take 2 hours to perform maintenance on. In most games, standard maintenance that is done every night doesn't take longer than 1 hour. So what is going on that is taking 2? There is no mention of a patch in this, so apparently it takes 2 hours to take down the servers, perform maintenance, and move on from there?
I hear ya... its 6pm here in Brisbane, Australia and STO won't be online until around 8pm.. and its been this way since they changed the window. At least when it went down at 8pm our time I could get a couple of hours in before maintenance.
Thats the problem with any game that has people playing from "all over" - times that would suit me personally would frustrate someone else... Worst thing is that I also seem to miss every event due to this as well - they are either on during the day when I'm at work, or are at 4am our time when I'm sound asleep.
Unfortunately I've just got to deal with it because of where I live... so, unfortunately, while this is a pain, at least you live in a timezone allow you to join any in-game events at a playable hour. Still a huge bummer tho.

A server is a complex thing.
And how long other games take on their maintenance does not matter because they are operating on a different system making a comparison more than slightly skewed, no? It's like comparing time needed to bake a souffle to a flan. Whilst both are baked good they need different amount of time in the oven.
Additionally their other game Champions Online is going down for maintenance at the same time.
So who knows? Maybe STO only needs 1 hour to do maintenance but thanks to CO also going down for a patch they decided to extend the time frame.
Let there be some mad speculation! Aaaaand I'll get a cup of tea and migrate to the sofa. Toodles.

Last weeks was still 2 hours long, but I will. Just puts a dampner on my relaxation from a hellish work week is all.
Plus the fact that I know have 11 more MK XI requisitions left before I will even consider going Elite
