Dear Cryptic - I hope you read this: I used to support your "actions" for 2 years + (open beta til today) - but now, I have to say...no... I undersand you went free-2-play (you HAD to) but THAT does not exuse what you are doing now. There HAS to be better ways to get incomes from STO then having the current Vacum-cleaner aproach???
(example: adding 1 item with even intervals that you KNOW will attract VERY MUCH attention but make the possibility of getting that item lower then the chance of finding a water bottle in the middle of Death Valley, Califonia at Noon).
Please answer me this:
WAS this YOUR IDEA CRYPTIC or was it (not so)-Perfect World's idea?
Maybe I'm wrong but I can not seem to see this happen with Champions Online? (correct me if I'm wrong on that.)
If I had a monhtly subscription, (I'm a lifetimer), I would have cancelled my sub. and deleted the game now that I see which way this is going (yes it took me this long but I was living in a dream world apperantly).
I'll end this "complain thread / anger thread" with this:
Cryptic - You have been standing at the edge of a cliff, but instead of walking AWAY from that cliff - You took a BIG step forward. I only hope you have a parachute somewhere.....and thank you GOD that STO is free-2-play cause its absolutly NOT a pay-2-play game now...
Sensors indicate incomming flaming and trolling.....
I'm a lifetime sub also. I think its pretty crappy of Cryptic to take advantage of their loyal pbase that already took a financial leap of faith by purchasing a lifetime sub, to turn around and "force" them to buy more things through C-store to participate in new content. (ie... one of a kind ship)
Maybe I'm wrong but I can not seem to see this happen with Champions Online? (correct me if I'm wrong on that.)
Actually...it did sort of happen in Champions Online.
They introduced the "grab bag" over in CO, prior to bringing it to STO.
What they did was create a new (or redressed) Archtype, as well as a cooler redress of a previously existing Costume Set, then they made it available entirely via random chance in these grab bags.
The flames on the forums continued for well over a month.
I hate being this annoyed by what they are doing, and I hate participating in misery threads... But it's gone nuts, all of the good things are being offset by twice as many bad things... and the most insane profiteering I've seen in entertainment since the last time I was in a strip club... Which might be cheaper than this "free" game at this point...
I know they are banking on free players, but they are going to lose the paying players in the process... and frankly, free players are not going to shell out like paying ones do... That's why we were here from the beginning, with every pre-order we could get... A lesson they will have hopefully learned 12 months from now when we have all realized that for the price attached to everything in this game, it's actually a lot cheaper to just play a monthly sub game...

I don't think the Champions online grab bags are nearly as bad as STOs. For one, the Grab bags had a new Archetype for silver players, gold players pretty much had it off the bat. Secondly the grab bags also had costume pieces from these bags which popped up somewhat often and allowed for some neat variations of the norm. They were not that difficult (as compared to STO) to obtain and they were not as in demand as in STO.
All in all the Champions bags did not take without giving like the STO bags. In champions you got some good stuff with your bags, whether or not it was the "exclusive" item. In STO the bags take without giving. You either get the exclusive or you get TRIBBLE. Most of the time you get TRIBBLE. Champions balanced their grab bags, the items were good enough to get some sales, but they were not OMG I MUST HAVE NOW, I'VE WANTED IT FOR THE 2 YEARS I'VE BEEN PLAYING items.
Unfortunately the items in STO are not balanced in that way. They are VERY desirable items and quite frankly the only items worth buying the chests for. If there were other good items in the chests then perhaps they would be worth buying and there would be less flaming.
I think they are shooting themselves in the foot anyway. I know some ppl buy stuff from the c-store to resell for EC. Cryptic keeps having these events and it crashes the market on the ppl that were buying the stuff in the first place. They're just gonna quit buying it and wait for the events, hoard it and resell later.
The model has other flaws as well and it really could be done in a more acceptable manner with out coming off as being greedy/sleazy/slimy...
and the x whoever got a ship needs to go. (i really hope that is a bug and they didnt do it intentionally)
Regardless, the 400 item limit is already showing its weakness under the f2p model since you can make 10 new noob characters and place 400x 1 mineral or 1 unreplicatible orders on the exchange. One guy held the common unreplicatables market hostage for at least a week and it looks like someone doing it alien artifacts.
I do have to say I enjoyed star trek better as a subscription model for a number of reasons. To me all this lottery TRIBBLE sucks the fun out of the game. Its like a dark cloud hanging over it or something.
No one is forcing you at gun point to buy ANYTHING from the C-Store, in addition you can exchange dilithium (which can be earned from missions) for C store points. You do not need to spend any money to get them.
well have to say yes we no ur trying to make money from a free to play game but now ur just taking the utter **** tbh. And the fact ive been on since 10am uk time till now3am uk time grinding my butt off to try and get a few boxes hopeing for the galor class ship to come and only had 1 box all day and yet ive seen ppl getting 2 or 3 galor class ships from boxes and me nothing but TRIBBLE im very dissapointed in this now rigged game so sad realy but this is wot happens when a company gets greedy
I am just going too say there going too burn out faster then Jimi hafa with all of this TRIBBLE i like the game but soon i will get annoyed enough that i ant going too play either. And i have a life sub.I mean i know they need money and every thing but this is getting out of hand.
Those of you not familiar with the asian MMO gameplay market, gather round and listen close. This is normal. Every month or two months, they will release a new, top of the line piece of content that can only be won by a lottery mechanic at a low (2% or less, being generous) chance. In most cases, this is a required aspect to play high-level content, but fortunately that has yet to become the case in STO.
Don't believe me? Ever played Cosmic Break?
Twas a shameful way I learned this, ah well, I don't think I've ever spent so much money on something free in my life, but that's how they get you. The only way to win is not to play. Don't be that guy.
WAS this YOUR IDEA CRYPTIC or was it (not so)-Perfect World's idea?
.
Based on the research I did, these things are coming straight from Perfect World's other games with some minimal Trek makeup and prognostics being applied.
I let my subscription run out a while ago. Until Cryptic stops this P2W and Blatant Ferengi Cash Grab mode of operation, they'll never get another cent. Talk with your wallet, folks.
Very true, but in this case, Cryptic is selling stuff without actually disclosing exactly what they are selling, so there is no way to make an informed choice.
It's not desperate at all. People pay for this TRIBBLE and they know it.
Lets take a stroll down memory lane to the Galaxy-X originally the only way to get that ship was to refer 5 friends to the game and if they signed up for a sub for one month you got the ship for free. Well there seemed to be a lot of players with more money then friends. They went out and bought 5 copies of the game (at the time about $30) and then they activated 5 new accounts putting their original account down as a reference. So they could get that ship that wasn't all the great but they just had to have it.
That's $225 for one ship. And people ate it up. They ended up halting the refer a friend thing and just putting on the C-Store so people would stop making BS accounts.
If people hold their own money in such low regard I don't see anything wrong with Cryptic or any other game developer taking it off their hands.

i play at least 3 other PWE titles on a semiregular basis & they all have at least 1 or more lottery box that you can buy for "zen" that has some elusive item (be it a pet or gear) so i can tell you it was no surprise to see the lottery boxes in STO when i logged in this morning. the only surprise is that it took them so long to do it. and they will continue to add more & more lottery boxes as long as players pay for the keys/boxes.
This is yet another thing added to the game since the free to play build went live that i have found a fun killer. I have been a life long Trek fan and really looked forward to this game, but if this is the direction they want to take it i am sad for the IP. Maybe we'll get another company to make a real Star Trek MMO that won't turn into a bunch of Ferengi carnival barkers trying to hawk their latest junk.
Gene Roddenberry would weep at what you have done to his beloved IP. You spit on his ENTIRE ethos by this course of action Cryptic/PWE. That is why i did not continue my sub this month.

Must be nice to have that option, I'm a lifer and I seriously doubt I'd ever see a penny back from Cryptic or Perfect World.
Welcome to free to play. Looks like all us lifers should have bought more TRIBBLE from the store. As it looks like they found someone who would in free to play. There are people complaining about dropping 15000cp and not getting that ship. Well with a drop rate of one half of one percent it looks like you have to drop 20000cp in order to lock up your chances.
None of this bothers me, it takes about a minute to find out this is a rip of if you check to forums before you buy anything in the store. What bothers me is the message flashing by every 5 minutes that some one has got the ship. And it's happening so often it's realistic to guess Cryptic is making 3000 dollars an hour off this rip off game, so we are sure to see many more.

Hate to say it, but no he wouldn't. Because he would be right there for his share of the profits. He'd only be crying if he wasn't getting any money from it.
no offense but getting tulaberries from a lock box is just an insult... i would love to keep supporting this game but for now you have lost my support with useless loot box grabs such as that........

Really? It's been said in many threads on this forum that Roddenberry was just as much a merchandise huckster as Lucas ever was, and Lucas practically invented merchantainment.
So yea, he would have stood in line for his cut--no, wait, cut in line in front of everyone else for his cut.
Sorry, Roddenberry may have been the genius that created Trek as we know it, but he was FAR from a philantropist.
You don't need to buy things no one is holding a weapon to your head!
If an item in the game that is new and out of your reach financially or using what you collect in the game then tough luck. The game allows you to earn c-store credits totally free.
If you care so much, get back in the game and get playing to earn instead of crying on the forums.
I am kind of having fun with this. I have never seen an MMO go F2P. I was wondering how they were going to raise revenue to keep the business up and running. Well, I got my answer. I get a kick out of what the devs are doing and the heat they are taking for it. My personal impression of the game appears to be something very different from what it actually is. I am glad for that enlightenment.
Do I like grab bags, not really...
Do I like that they are in STO where I purchased my LTS, no...
Do I think Crytpic has ripped off LTS players, yes.
Do I have a moral dilema about it, no, or I wouldn't be typing this.

There is no difference between Cryptic and PWE. They are the same.
I think PWE brought in a whole bag of tricks to make F2P profitable.
Personally, I'm all for it, provided some effort is made to keep PvP from becoming an unbalanced mess. Not because I only care about PvP, but because in PvE the new stiuff is just fun and interesting, and balance doesn't matter. And the mystery boxes don't bother me - I just don't spend any $ on them.
Notice the Dilithium exchange Disabled too? they dont really want to give free keys out either... Ill be selling my boxes or deleting them and probebly now letting my sub run out... silly paying for nothing i need anymore

What an obvious attempt at a cash grab scheme. Obviously don't care about keeping your current members.
So disappointed in you.
Lost my vote.

100 c-store credits for a key to open a box with a battery?

If you bought the keys, you're more responsible for these items than Cryptic and PW.
People made this mistake all too often in the past, with Atari. There is no difference between Cryptic and PWE. They are the same.
