So apparently Lock Boxes drop as "Mysterious Lock Box" items that need a key to unlock, which *then* drop either a normal or golden cardassian lock box, which itself *also* needs a key to unlock.
I was down with the one key thing, but 200 C-points a pop? I'm not really so fond of this plan.
The mystery box from STFs shouldn't require a key to open. If you're getting the popup that you need a key for that particular box, try changing maps or logging out and back in.

Aha...so I wasted a master key for nothing on the box I got from an STF? Great:rolleyes:
And yes, it required one to open...
I got two boxes, opened both. I believe a Cardie box was inside them (which is what actually required the key). I'm only down two keys, one for each box.
(I know, confusing example, but that's what happened)

Ok I would get this fixed now becasue at DS9 there are a lot of people calling you(cryptic) scammers and yes it does take a key to open.
Yeah if you hvae a key in your inventory it will use it to open the mytery box place the key in the bank and open it in inventory it says requires key which is opposite of what the item description says.

I have wasted 4 keys now to find this out.
The Mystery boxes don't need keys, I just double clicked mine and got a lock box from it

It kept taking mine a couple of minutes ago i had 4 boxes and I had ten keys now i am down to 2 keys left. 4 for the mystery boxes and 4 for the lock boxes
This is making me very mad because i just spent real life money for those keys and there went for chances for the only good item in the box.
Q: How does the Mystery Box that can be purchased from the STF General Merchandise store work? A: When opened, this box gives you a normal Cardassian Lock Box most of the time, but can rarely give you a Cardassian Lock Box Gold. These Mystery Boxes do not require a key to open, but the Lock Box you get from opening one does.
Q: So why would I purchase the Mystery Box at the STF store instead of purchasing from the Dilithium store? A: The Dilithium store always gives a normal Cardassian Lock Box, while the STF store gives you a chance to get the more desirable Gold box.
The Mystery boxes don't need keys, I just double clicked mine and got a lock box from it
It sounds like it doesn't NEED them.. but it's using peoples keys who have them in their inventory. Not sure if that's the case though, just what sounds like.

I just jumped in-game and tested this out, as did QA. The Mystery Box I purchased for 5 EDCs from Roxy on DS9 did not need a key to open -- the CLB inside did.
i have purchased 24 of these keys and again with the boxes and on the jemhadar ship release i bought 26 of the boxes both times i ahve come up empty on one of the special ships and i find this highly unfair it means in total that i have spent 5000 cryptic points that £40 and i have gained basically no benefit and its not just me there alot of people who spend alot of money on this game and when special come up we come up empty why is it that when we try so many times we gain nothing i dont wanna sound like a whiner but it is so unfair that we invest so much time and money in a game we care about to recieve very little in the way of specials so can you please answer me why myself and so many others have to endure the pain of lost funds for essentially nothing

Unfortunately, you took a risk and you lost.
If you went to Vegas several times and spent several thousand each time and never won anything it would be the same situation.
What's the old saying? "Many will play. One will win" or something to that effect except in this case it is "Lots will play. Some will win"

so we 1st need to spend edc's on the boxes and then real money on the clb's in there ??
Money grap.

I think what people are saying i here is the following:
Have some keys in your inventory
Buy and STF Mystery Box
Open it and it will deduct one key from your inventory
If you have no keys in your inventory it will still open. I am not in game to check this out but that is what I discern people are saying.

Because it's a random chance, and a low one at that.
Do you have the same reaction when you don't win the lottery, even if you spend $100 on lotto tickets?
for those that didn't realize it Cryptic is now owned by Perfect World Entertainment (PWE) who is very fond of lottery boxes and you will at least 1 if not more variety of box in any of their other games.
so complaining that Cryptic is at fault does no good and should be redirected elsewhere. and as long as ppl spend money to purchase the lottery box items PWE will continue to use them as a means to make money for themselves.

You don't have to buy them for EDCs, the CLBs drop in-game as extra loot from killing mobs or completing STFs. I know I have a lot of Rare Salvage left over, so I find it nice to be able to get a few extra boxes with the Rare Salvage that would have just been taking up space in my bank.

is there a reason (out of money) you SCAM us by only allowing us FED/KLING Ships and releasing the rest by 100.000 itemmall (Cryptic Points) purchase????

They have said OVER AND OVER that CBS would not allow them to release ships like the Bug or Galor without making it ultra-rare.
Now, are there ways they could've done it that wouldn't generate revenue? Sure. That's a different argument. But they've made it clear they aren't allowed to just release them as C-Store or in-game ships to anyone who wants one.

Yes there is actually.
CBS who owns all of the rights to the material will not allow (and has stated this on multiple occasions) cryptic to have players fly cross faction ships. They don't want the image of Star Trek ruined by a bunch of Federation captains flying Jem Hadar Attack ships and now Cardassian ones too.
CBS did agree that if the chance was INFINITELY small to get one, then they would allow Cryptic to put these ships in the game. That way the image of the Federation remains and a few lucky captains are allowed to fly the ships around. This reason is also why Cryptic bothers to come out with a small background on each of the ships and why we have them.

Seriously? CBS Ruined Star Trek with Enterprise and the last 2 Movies...
and the RAGE is about paying 25$ for a few crappy resources and pets with no value and NOTHING wortyusable, temped to chargeback with this scam...
An infinitely small chance unless they're handed out to people "in the spirit of the season of giving and goodwill."
While a good number of people are speaking out on the issue on the forums, the vast majority of players who have never even graced these boards are out there hemorrhaging cash for C-Points playing an game of chance with undisclosed odds.
Simply put, the concerns and complaints of the people against these cash grabs are falling on deaf ears. PEW/Cryptic will continue to do whatever brings in pure profit, and keeping gold subs around isn't part of that equation. They stand to gain more from micro-transactions from silver members than retaining long-term players.
Much like these "lottery boxes," the numbers just aren't in our favor.

There's no scam. They were very clear about what you might get. YOU, somehow, assumed you would be guaranteed a ship after X number of boxes. You were wrong.
I bet if you try and charge it back, you'll fail. There was no lie, no fraud; people who buy lottery tickets and don't win can't cry SCAM either.
Comments
So much for "gold subscribers will not notice any changes to their gameplay experience!"
Kinda of funny to see how far they have gone at Cryptic to get a buck. I almost feel bad about it. Well, once I stop laughing I will. I promise.

Well you don't "need" to do anything if you don't want the items. If you want the item(s) in the box then you can obtain boxes three ways:
According to the FAQ the ship drops from both with a higher chance from the gold box.
