A wider view, maybe within*company* ranks, there are some stunned folks seeing the reaction among the *gaming* population.

The bigger question is--How to save face from this.

    Answer: Bad idea, no?

    Stay Tune...

I love how Cryptic is silent on this topic, yet the majority want it gone, the thread is popular and ever growing. Another instance of Cryptic not listening to its own community. They are completely disconnected, and its a shame. Didn't use to be that way, but their goal for STO is now clearly showing. I've been the biggest supporter of this game, praising it from here to kingdom come, but even I'm starting to get peeved now.

I strongly suspect that nothing CAN be done, practically, until tomorrow morning - when they take the servers down for another round of maintenance, over which people will predictably complain again.

"The world is changing. Who now has the strength to stand against the armies of enraged fans? To stand against the might of nerd rage? Together,we fans shall rule the Alpha Quadrant. The old world will burn in the fires of forum flames. The moderators will fall. A new order will rise. We will drive the machinery of troll with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the Spam. We have only to remove those who oppose us."

    You are probably correct. :(

But they could still tell us that/ tell they are taking it down (if they are)

I will dream tonight of waking up to a STO without these dang messages. :D

I have to say, I'm rapidly coming to that point.

Ain't that the truth, and I'd know too...

Personally, I want a way to turn off MY Unlock Messages in addition to being able to turn off others.

If I get a Galor I'd rather the whole server not know about it. What business is it of anyone's what items I acquire anyway?

I love these ships but I hate the way you have to acquire them. I don't want to brag that I've gotten one. Really.

Maybe this was one big crazy misunderstanding. Maybe they meant to just send the notifications to a file somewhere so they could track it . . .

    naaaaaaaaaaahhhhh

Either way, I see maintenance is coming in the morning. Are our prayers answered? (hope hope hope hope hope)

I recommend this as the standard response. Fill up their support inboxes.

And then real tickets take longer to get responded to than normal. ... ... ... ...

"Normal" might still be long, but do we have to make it longer?

Moot point. Cryptic is an American company, and its servers are based in the US, therefore it is subject to US privacy laws - Not Chinese laws.

Not every little thing that happens to this game

BUT a grab bag that adds non-faction ships to the game? You-betcha. CBS approved both grab bag setups AND the ships inside them.

PWI, the company that owns Cryptic now, is an American company.

It in turn is held by PWE, a company based in China. (I may be getting the I and the E mixed up.) However, both Cryptic and PWI are American companies, both incorporated in California, and both must adhere to US laws and regulations. This includes what customer protection and data privacy laws exist in the US.

In general, an American company, even one held by a foreign holding company, may not violate those laws just because the holding company overseas said so, or because the holding company operates under a different set of laws. In fact, this is why there has been a lot of problems in international business and privacy law the past couple of years, since the US and the EU have 'different enough' data privacy laws to cause problems for each other.

Look, the Devs have to follow the marching orders from management and marketing. It could be an instance where they do not have the option to comment as this may not have been a Dev Team decision (Just like removing the PvE queue acess button from the minimap UI and I say that because it WAS there and due to player request Thomas The Cryptic Cat stated he got permission to put it back and is doing do.)

But, in the end, they haven't closed the thread and perhaps they are waiting until it gets sufficiently large so they can go to marketing and say:

"This is having a negative effect on the game - see here."

But, until it gets closed or se get some Dev comment, we can't know for certain who made the decision on the Galor announcement span; and if they'll allow it to be removed or blocked by a UI option.

Someone posted a thread saying that they cannot confirm the unlock message with his/her friend:
    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=253598

Do any of you know people that have seen a message saying that somebody you know have unlocked the galor, and subsequently confirmed it?

If the rumor is not true, great, then PW is just trying to money-grab us and ruin the Star Trek franchise.

If it is true, then it's a pretty big cheat, trying to lure us into buying keys by deceiving us on the odds of getting the galor...

This time, I am actually interested in hearing from those who have luck.

Just saw this on the Launcher, here's hoping they take this thing down:
We will be bringing down Star Trek Online (Holodeck) on Friday, February 10th from 12:00AM to 2:00AM Pacific Time (0800 to 1000 UTC) for maintenance.

I think this is an important point. Brandon HAS seen this thread, he merged a bunch of others with this one, but he has NOT closed it. So... I would gently suggest that we keep calm, keep expressing our displeasure calmly (maybe interject the occasional light humor.)

As has been noted, keep in mind that this is a typical thing in PW games; Cryptic may not have much choice about it, but they could go back to Upper Upper Management and say, 'This might not work too well in this game.'

One was in the TTS channel talking about how happy he was that he got the ship because he never wins anything - right afyter the announcement message with his name came across the screen, so I'd say the announcements are accurate.

This is yet another thing added to the game since the free to play build went live that i have found a fun killer. I have been a life long Trek fan and really looked forward to this game, but if this is the direction they want to take it i am sad for the IP. Maybe we'll get another company to make a real Star Trek MMO that won't turn into a bunch of Ferengi carnival barkers trying to hawk their latest junk.

I haven't been in game long yet since the patch, so I haven't seen this, but does this mean the droprate for the Galors is high enough that these messages are annoying?

Do the math. If the drop rate is 1 in every 200 boxes and ten players open an average of ten boxes every minute, then you are going to see dozens of boxes being opened in the average play sessions.

Basically selling lottery tickets without disclosing the odds of winning, potentially in violation of State and Federal law carries enough legal risk.

I sincerely doubt that Cryptic would go further than that and deliberately try to deceive consumers in such a blatant and obvious way because the potential civil and criminal liability. At least with the current lotto boxes, they could make a reasonable argument that they had a good-faith belief that their business model was legal. If they were shown to be purposefully lying to consumers about how many people were winning the ship lottery, they would have no standing to make the good-faith claim.

    1. The game is not truly free to play, a lot of us actually paid a lot for it before PW came around and robbed everything

    2. Why do lifetime subscribers have to suffer through this?

    3. Let me rationalize all this hate around here, for the sake of sanity:

    So,why is the message here?

It is not a coding mistake. It is also not for notification, because everybody knows about the business with the new Galor ship.

It's most likely a psychological ploy to sway your perception towards the likelihood of YOU getting the Galor. We all know the odds are astronomically tiny, as we've seen from the Jem. And because of that, most people won't feel like spending much c-points in an attempt to get one. Money-grab model busted.

However, with a large player base, it is not hard to imagine that a few galor ships would be rolled somewhere in the world every hour. By announcing this occurrence on every screen of every player, it would appear that the chances of rolling a galor is pretty high. After all, galors are popping out every 10-20 mins or so. Of course, on your own screen, you'll never see how many boxes have been opened. So this half-of-the-story spam creates an illusion of a "high galor roll chance". Instead, it's the same chance, it's just the occurrences that you're seeing.

Does it work? Maybe some people are really prepared to buy keys, and not rest, until they get their galor. Maybe. It works on 6-yr olds with less-developed awareness levels. It also works on adults, more often than one thinks. (you are not one of them, because you are already on this thread)

What really upsets me, is that PW is treating us like this. They are harvesting money off us like harvesting bacon off pigs. They are not even attempting to appear a reputable merchant. It's just blatant money grab. No shame, no self-respect. The Star Trek franchise and the DEV team is in the middle of it.

If all they can think of is money, not customers, than they will be "loved" likely how we all "love" wall street bankers. I'm just critically worried about the franchise. First, it ruins the name of Star Trek. Second, if I own the Star Trek franchise, I would be mighty ****ed to know that it's been reduced to some facebook-level money grab game.

I agree. I found it rather funny how convenient it was for them that the DL exchange went down today as well. All I can say is that it's a good thing my wife didn't let me buy the lifetime membership.

    Now this is interesting.

Have Cryptic built themselves a random spam generator?

    Interesting indeed.

I'm not going to derail this thread with my thoughts on this, instead, I'm going to bring it back on-topic by saying my poor UI window is now getting bombarded with so many of these stupid notifications that they have literally gone top-to-bottom of the screen a couple of times.

    OFF BUTTON PLEASE.
