Im a Gold, and I feel more than a little torked off. There is absolutely NO incentive for us to keep our subs besides some very small things like the 400 CP stipend. If it was like 1200 CP it would be worth it. Game's 12 bucks a month, and it would make CP defined as 100 points per dollar for Golds.
It makes much more sense to me, but otherwise the Silvers are getting all of the breaks (with the exception of the Sector Block Advertisements on Voice Chat, which most people don't use), they can even buy EC cap extensions which make the Silver EC cap virtually an option, and the Golds and Lifetimes are being shafted, exactly like we knew we would be.
Its a pretty sad state of affairs, the Subs are PWE's constant revenue stream. Its a guaranteed source of revenue, every month they get real, hard currency from us, yet they're treating us like their red shirted step-children. Something needs to be done about it. The current incentives to stay gold aren't very appealing. There is no attempt at retention. There's no "Stay Gold" retention program like the Army's "Stay Army" retention program, they simply do not care which I see as being equal to suicide and I do not want to see that for this game, it has an unbelieveable amount of potential. The only real attempt is the 400 CP stipend and thats honestly not very much for 12 bucks. For the same 12 bucks I can buy 1000 CP if I'm a Silver. Its 60% more CP than the Gold Stipend.
Honestly, I dont really see the point in keeping a Gold Sub unless they do something to make us either more Elite, give us something private that the silvers cannot do, or some such. It makes no sense at all.

They make far more off the c-store than they ever will off subs. One good ship costs more than a monthly subscription, and the small things are even larger sellers.
They will never make Gold more attractive because they may their money from the Silver players (via C-Store Purchases). We have to wonder if Gold would have been offered if STO started out as F2P? I see Gold as a remnant of the previous subscription model to retain existing players, and to offer an option. I only ever played for free on Champions Online. Everyone has to make their own decision.

It's painfully obvious that 'gold' exists so that us lifers don't feel like we've been bent over a barrel.

Yeah, but I don't feel that way. I have well and truly covered any monthly subscription with my LTS well before STO went F2P. I feel for those that were no able to do that. C-Store was here before F2P so that does not change anything for me.

I'm pretty much in the same boat really. I was only a couple months off of being paid for. I bet most of us are, as marketing really dropped off for the game shortly after launch.

Absolutely correct. I believe that there is no need to have a legacy sub model if the Free/Silver players get just about everything we have. I do have reservations regarding using microtransactions as a revenue model, but it does work sometimes.
If they think they can make it work, as I believe they do, they may as well just tell the lifers and subs to go to hell and convert their accounts. Except more diplomatically and businesslike of course. I see no reason to have Gold Accounts that give the Subscribers about nothing, when we can spend the same amount of money for a larger amount of direct CP.

The key in this, is that not everyone will realize they are getting nothing, some people just aren't that aware. So they'll end up with the money lifers put down, plus micro transactions, plus a few (not a lot) but some subs.

Yeah, I know. Alot of people aren't aware, and if they ever woke up and cancelled their subs, it wouldnt make much of a difference because of the microtransactions making the bulk of the revenue as you said earlier.
I know better (because Ive been playing this game since 2010) than to think they'll actually do anything for subs and/or lifers. It would be nice but it wont happen. Eventually we're probably all going to get converted. Thats what I believe based on the current tide of the game's administration. Ive never played champions so I have no idea what happened there but it seems to me they're trying to reduce us to a minority and then quietly eliminate us as being something legacy that is completely irrelevant in the "New" form of the game and its economy. Its a good strategy, I applaud them for their business acumen. I dont appreciate it being a Subscriber, but I do understand where they're coming from. Its just a shame really.
I guess this is mostly me wanting to hold on to the past and the way things were. It doesn't really matter to them in the long or short run though.

As a former Gold member that switched to Silver, I can say there are only a few things that would ever make me look back and grasp for the shiny title again. It isn't the measly amount of cryptic points offered monthly, it isn't the small privileges within the fleet....
No- the only things I could see in the future that could make myself, and other players in the same predicament make the switch would definitely be to add more privileges to Gold. I discussed with my husband earlier this evening what are very reasonable and possible privileges they could have. More game content to those who pay more...such as opening more of the Gamma quadrant... having special events with high quality items or priceless opportunities only available to Gold members... an extensively enlarged list of missions...etc. Another great idea came to mind of perhaps raising the level cap but only for Gold members after a certain point.
Currently there is no reason to make Gold members stay and it's disheartening. STO is my favorite MMORPG I have ever played, and I would gladly pay for a new sub. if it were worth my while. I personally don't buy things from the C-Store...I am heavily oriented around leveling up my characters and team and going on story-based missions. I'm close to the level cap and am very attached to my main character and would find a way to pay the sub every month again if I could keep leveling her up.
I didn't initially make the switch because I was angry at the little difference in account types, but merely because I was having financial difficulties and a bank that didn't communicate with itself. This is why I emphasize I would FIND A WAY to pay for a sub--because STO is my recreation choice.
The key in this, is that not everyone will realize they are getting nothing, some people just aren't that aware. So they'll end up with the money lifers put down, plus micro transactions, plus a few (not a lot) but some subs.
I just realized myself...I had forgotten about the lifers... shouldn't there be at least 3 levels? Platinum, Gold and Silver? Or Gold, Silver, Bronze? If I were a lifer I would expect many privileges even above Gold since I paid a very hefty sum.
I know many Gold members that truly don't realize they are getting a bit of a rough deal... so I completely get this point.

I agree with your points, and it would be nice. They wont do it because they simply don't care about Golds and Lifers, but in a parallel universe where Cryptic and PWE cared about their customers and their customers suggestions, it would be very cool.

Well I never really expect them to do any of these things. Or at least not any time in the perceivable future. I simply know those would be things I'd be willing to pay a sub for...and little else. In all reality some Gold members might be satisfied even if they made say...1500 [cryptic points] a month or at least more than a Silver could get...which is what...for the same price as a sub...1000? Cryptic points wouldn't be enough for me to go Gold. That's just my style of gameplay. But even if I wanted them...it would definitely have to be a substantial amount in comparison.

In a perfect and just world, maybe. But they already have our money, what would be the incentive?
When lifers complain about thing we get labeled as whiners. Look around the forums. Its happened before. I was FURIOUS when the ball dropped about STO becoming F2P. So many A S S kissers out there tried to tell the general population how the influx of new players would be good for the game. How? Except for a silver players buying a cap increase here, a new ship there, or buying nothing, how its that better than guaranteed income from subs? $15 a month from players that felt invested in the game and LTS who also felt invested in the game. We pushed the developers to add content, fix bugs, equalize the KDF with the Feds, and not put every new shiny in the C-store. But with F2P, that all went away. Their is no reason for the game to progress. New bugs are rampant(autofire anyone?) but we are told to endure because there is no reason to complain about a F2P game. Its like going F2P justified the treatment we were getting before. Its just more of the same...
I am the first to tell the devs when they do something I like. Sadly, that isn't often. With a sub based game you feel like your voice has more weight. For instance, we were told the Ambassador Class was coming,
(http://www.stowiki.org/Engineering_reports/20110819#In_Development look under in design discussions)
that was 6 months ago. They push things off. They add new fluff. "oh, joy, I got a new Horta pet!" Gimme content, gimme game bug fixes, gimme endgame that doesn't involve grinding. Gimme a chance to earn new high end stuff with out grinding my life away because you can't come up with any new ideas. Its all bs. If a person can make a new mission in the Foundry in a day or less why can't the devs? Why am I a horrible person for asking these questions?
I don't mean to hijack your thread but I have to say.
Your avatar. Hoo'ah 1AD!
I was HHC 1AD stationed in Ansbach Germany from '89-91. Served division tactical during Iraq 1. :-)
Okay, back to your regularly scheduled post.
Hooah! I'm actually from the 470th MI Bde, during OEF 5/6, got out in 2008, but I kind of hate Griffins and didnt want to name my fleet after them. Always have hated Griffins. I love my old unit but I hate their choice of SSI and what we call ourselves. So that was kind of out.
Anyway, my fleet's XO was in 1-6th Infantry during OIF 3 or 4 so we figured it was appropriate to name the Fleet after the 1AD. Its Joint Task Force Old Ironsides, because I have some Navy people in it too, hence the joint part.

I agree with you as well, its always been a question of mine as to why a great foundry mission only takes at most a week to produce, yet the devs can't seem to do that. And their toolkit is better than ours. Ive often thought about cranking out 20 or so really high-quality high-speed foundry missions and then sending Cryptic my resume.
And I dont know why the community makes people out to be the bad guy when they make suggestions about things that have a huge and undeniable need to be improved. The critics just want to see the game thrive. People just don't seem to understand that constructive criticism isn't negative, its the critic attempting to make whatever they're criticizing better.
It's painfully obvious that 'gold' exists so that us lifers don't feel like we've been bent over a barrel.
See, and I thought Gold was set up so that Cryptic wouldn't cross the line with lifers and violate the terms they set forth when selling the LTS. Which is what F2P did.
So don't stay gold. Going silver is in fact the best any subscriber who's characters are already leveled out can do. Sad but true.
In a lot of other MMOs, this type of response is common on the forums and kind of comes across as rude to some. But in this game, and in this instance, it's really solid and sound advice. As Schneemann points out once you've levelled or even just had a sub for a month that was paid for to get the bonuses, the silver sub is pretty much far more bang for your buck.
You can continue to play and enjoy the game, but the silver offer is just that good compared to the gold. So this is one of those times where it's not a snarky "if you don't like it, lump it" retorts. It's just good advice.

I'm with you, alot of times in MMOs it is a really rude thing to say, but in regard to this game its honestly sort of sadly funny that the Golds are being treated the way they are because the silvers are getting much more for their money than we are. But then again MaoMaoAi's comment about not really wanting anything from the C-Store is something I do agree with as well, I want the Galaxy Dreadnought, I already have a VA Retrofit and its not something I ever use. But then again, If they make a Sovereign Retrofit, Id want to get it. The Odyssey class is what Im using at the moment but I haven't tried it with an STF yet.
I'm probably going to hang on to my Gold for awhile and see if anything improves, but I seriously doubt I'll keep it if something doesn't change very quickly.
Anyway, I get the list of gripes about endgame content, episodic content, etc. It really gets my gall that if you want any real content after you do the Undine front you have to do Foundry Missions, and while alot of them are really good and you can tell the designer put alot of thought into making them, there are some that really suck. Or shouldnt be in this game because it'll have things which contradict canon. But then again, as its been said, a player that knows what they're doing can make a decent foundry mission in less than a day, and a very good one in less than a week. Its taken the devs more than a YEAR, not a month like in most MMOs, its been a YEAR waiting on Cryptic to make new missions. And now we get six, a new one each week. I appreciate the effort, and Im looking forward to playing them, but its honestly not enough. What happened to the idea to remaster some more important missions? It was a good idea, and I liked the two they redid. And with the way the new mission interface works, it would be really sweet to do that some more and let us know they did it through the mission interface. Alot of people never redid the remastered missions when they came out because they didnt know what was up as the replay interface was really clunky (new players have no idea how much easier it is to replay now that we dont have to go to the Bridge and then the office, then use the computer and pick which mission it is from the name only, it was truly terrible, you guys have it easy).
Starfleet got two remastered missions, KDF got none. KDF continues to have like zero content. I wish they'd listen to us and actually make new content, or make sequels to the missions already. Or make something to explain the Borg invasion of Defera better, more Borg missions that aren't STFs in Gamma Orionis, Joint Missions with the Remans as well as the Klingons against the Undine or Romulans, etc. I could go on, but everyone gets that its not that hard to make new content, but Cryptic concentrates on making fluff. Its gotta change if they want this game to be successful with the micropayment model.
Just more of my two cents, its up to about a dime now.
