This post is my subjective impressions from about a week of play, while it's still fresh in my mind. To get it out of the way: I'm not familiar with the source material (though after playing I asked for a TOS boxed set for my birthday), subscribing is never going to be an option for me (but the c-store is), and right now I'm pretty sick and I'm hoping that doesn't effect my writing too much.

Anyway, first impressions:

The Good
Ship combat. The naval feel of the combat works well, and is controllable for a gamer with poor reflexes (such as myself).

Shooter mode. Adds some novelty to the ground combat, and feels natural given the ranged focus.
Events. I like the system, though if what I've seen of it is the extent then it's not so interesting.

Themeing. As I said, I'm not familiar with the source, but the setting is compelling. There's not much in the MMO space that is genuinely space themed (from what I can gather the obvious other one isn't really a space game).
The Bad
Sector space. Weird hybrid of star chart and space flight, slow and oddly scaled too. To my mind it would've been better just to have a detailed map from which you choose your destination.

Heavy plasma torpedoes. The deal is supposed to be that they're very powerful but can be shot down, right? *miss**miss**miss**miss**miss**miss*"right shields down""hull integrity below 50%".

Bugs. I've run into one a couple of times that simply stopped me from using any of my ground powers. Weapon included.

The Confusing
The skill point spent requirements for the next rank of skills. I think it may have been mentioned somewhere, but when I was buying skills nothing was telling me why I couldn't get the skills that matched my current map.

Dilithium exchange. OK, so someone's selling C-points for x amount Dilithium. So I click on it and nothing happens. Right. So I guess I need to enter in how much I want to sell my Dilithium for here? And... feh. Maybe another time.

Bug. A display bug with engine stats meant I had a green mkII impulse all the way into the 20s

All said, I'm enjoying the game and intend to keep playing.

basically you put how much dilithium you want to sell, and how much you want for it. then you wait for someone to buy it, just like the exchange. it does take time. IIRC there is not a mail notification like the exchange

Just found out another thing that I was apparently confused about up 'til now. On the list it goes.

try to skill starship targetting, use "fire at will" BOff or "eject warp plasma" to catch those big ones, mines/torpedospread also can kill those slow moving torps too. also i noticed that if u use "scramble sensors" that torps may be confused too and u have a bit more time before they hit u.

In an emergency I have also used boarding assault shuttles to intercept the incoming torpedoes. I had already fired everything I got and already used brace for impact so Boarding Party was the last resort!

Unlike phasers, the assault shuttles do not miss, they just ram the torpedoes head on, saving the ship. Helps that the shuttles move at a very high speed too and you get 3 shots to nail the incoming torp.

Lastly, Evasive Action and/or an engine battery can give you those valuable few extra seconds to shoot down the torpedo before it impacts your shields. Angle your ship away from the incoming and fly away as fast as you can. If you have mines, drop them, they will detonate on contact with the torpedoes or home in on them automatically if they have a few seconds' warning time.
