I'm not far from knocking out the full diplomacy bit, but I'm wondering if I have to do this exclusively with duty officers now or do the diplomatic missions do a whole helluva lot?
I wouldn't say so. The missions only give 10 DXP, and in my case I still need 50,000+....that 10 DXP isn't hardly going to dent it. I'm starting to wish I'd actually bothered to get it back before the "revamp".
It would be quicker doing the diplomacy missions as most of the DOff missions take a number of hours each. But the Duty Officers offer a lot of DXP as well. So in other words, both will work.

does not matter. you seem to pick up 10 dip xp here and there from either. it's a grind either way. At least doing it via doffs means you get to personally do something else.

okay, so it is exactly 10 points? That's terrible. Wish Cryptic would have cared enough to readjust the point system for dxp when they changed all of this.
I guess it's too much to ask that Cryptic give a **** about anything other than money. Maybe they should read the Facebook IPO letter to get a glimpse into a model that doesn't **** every one off in the end.
None of the other commendation categories have an extra method of gaining the XP. It's lucky we get any extra diplo XP at all from doing the diplomacy missions.
The doff system is now the primary way to gain mass diplo points, but doing the diplomacy missions like the investigations and First contacts should be something fun and extra to gain DXP. It would be nice if they raised the amount you can earn from them instead of 10 points, but they probably figured you'd be using the doff system mostly.
And it's not like they want you levelling to max diplomacy in a short time - all these new commendation systems are meant to keep you doing stuff while you're in game over months.
*sigh*. Sorry, lots of pent up rage against Cryptic. This probably does not need to be a flame thread.
Still, Cryptic sucks. It just so happens that they picked a good IP and somebody else could have done it better.
doubt it. this game is alot better and you should give the game and devs more credit. i dont think they need to up the xp since doff missions can give 347 xp on a crit.
I would be happy if the DXP missions were changed so that:
- Some become random hails (slightly akin to how patrols have been struck off the main mission flow)
- Some (first contacts) become the final missions reward from a DOff DXP mission arc (akin to Ambassador Neelix going off to meet the natives a few times, only for Janeway to put her foot in it by arching her arms on her hips...)
DOff mission arcs have proved sucessfully intruiging among people. Lets tie these defunct missions IN to the DOff system, instead of having them linger on as the decaying husks of a diplomacy system that was long forgotten before it ever got properly started.

Prior to f2p, 15 a month x 12 = at least twice as much as you would pay for your out of the box game. Which means that they should be putting out the content of at least one out of box game to keep up with the value of payment. Cryptic didn't and cared more about C-store. I know it's f2p now and what have you. They still failed me. I have no love for them, particularly after reading about the whole grab bag bit. That was sick and unethical.

It took me a couple of weeks of regular play to hit Marauder. It's not awful and realistically didn't require any more active play than the old Diplomacy grind did, the difference being that I could do the old Diplomacy in around 20 marathon hours whereas the new grind had to be done in spurts of play.

i dont care about grab bag if it helps put out new missions and gets more devs hired. why should it bother you? just dont buy the grab bags then. but they did support this game. hope you know b4 pw they were down to about less then 20 devs trying to keep this game alieve.

Which speaks to the point that perhaps had Cryptic not ruined its reputation and focused on content that entire time, things like this might not have happened. I don't feel bad at all for Cryptic on that one. To boot, they've been focusing on Neverwinter the entire time anyways, taking away from development of the games they already have. Not my fault.
Cryptic consistently does things that are outside the interest of long term loyalty and gain, and inside the interest of short term money grabs. That's their business model. That's their fault. It's like the Odyssey class starship and the BOs that they said were going to come out with but didn't. Why not give away a ship with awesome BOs and a separating saucer. It builds good will and gets people in the game to take a look at what you do have up for sale. But Cryptic doesn't think like that.
I work for a company that's very customer service oriented and I can tell that Cryptic fails. They don't care about the clients and that's why I don't care for them.
if it helps put out new missions and gets more devs hired
by the by, that argument has been going since day one. Look how far it's gotten STO. Do you honestly think that if Cryptic gets more money they will spend it on in game stuff? Nah, they'll spend just enough, and then all of the rest on more C-Store items and their bonuses. Just you watch. As history teachers love to point out, history repeats itself.

There's so much wrong about your assumptions I don't even know where to begin. Unfortunately, etiquette requires I keep what I know to myself due to the circumstances of how I acquired it.
I'll just say this, Cryptic got the short end of the stick when it came to Atari. Their move to PWE is probably the best thing to happen to them. And they WANTED to add content. But when you get no money from your parent company for almost a year, it's kind of hard to do that.

dude you are miss informed. sorry to burst your bubble but atari would not give them the money to make new stuff. the devs did what they could. the company that bought atari name was killing this game. what ever this is turing into troll thred. maybe you should just google what happened or listen to a dev pod cast or something.

Oh come on. You know me. We are old chums ( I'm the guy sent you champions in the post, plus those 500 cp for free )
You don't have to be my friend or agree with me. but it's broken and an incessant grind for newer players.

You are misinformed/ Atari gave cryptic development money Which Cryptic spent. cryptic earned, in revenue, over two years, $27m which they spent. Cryptic then went in to lose a further $25m after that over a two year financial period.
other people might be misinformed, but we, the shareholders certainly are not.
As for 'the company that bought Atari name'? You are confused in your timeline
The only real advantage to Diplomacy missions at this point is that they are relatively quick and easy to do when you're in the middle of your Strange New Worlds Exploration cycle grinding Dilithium.

lmao shareholders? are you kidding me? we are not. not lifers not subs. oh and that mill ur talking about, take it up with cbs

If Atari spent $25 million on getting the game out and then immediately sold Cryptic for what they bought it, then yes, they lost $25 million. That doesn't mean Cryptic is a money loser. It just means Atari wasn't patient enough to get their investment back the way MMOs earn them.
This is similar to a guy buying a house for $100,000, spending $25,000 to fix it up and then selling it for $100,000 because he wasn't willing on waiting for the housing market to come back. He lost $25,000 on a house that is still worth $125,000.

My understanding was that Atari borrowed $40 million to buy and fund the development of CO, STO, and NWN. How much they might have lost is really just paper pushing. Bioware "lost" over $100 million, possibly much more, from revenues making SWTOR. But they are large enough to absorb such a development hit. Atari clearly wasn't.
Either way it's a new day with new bosses who seem to have a real plan in place: a plan which includes schedules, regular updates on the website, and so far they seem to be on course. It grows tiring to keep talking about the past. Ultimately we have to deal with what is here, IMO.

Sorry mate. You are one of the few here I like to read. But that's not the case. Atari lost their purchase, their investment and their further bankroll on Cryptic. Cryptic had close on 100m in and their net output was $25m in the hole. That's the truth. It can't be avoided.
Oh come on. You know me. We are old chums ( I'm the guy sent you champions in the post, plus those 500 cp for free )
You don't have to be my friend or agree with me. but it's broken and an incessant grind for newer players.
I thought that was you and it's good to see you back.
I think it's an interesting but woefully incomplete attempt to rewire how people play.
By itself it's a pain.
As part of a larger plan, I think it can work. And Heretic has shown the ability to get stuff done flying solo on projects and Cryptic is staffing up. Several posters here are, I believe, at various stages of being in the running for jobs and there are some clear signs that Cryptic has more money to play with now.
So I think it's not a bad idea to rewire how people play. It's kinda clunky at present but it's not unsalvagable... and if they went back to a reward cycle like the old one, they'd end up focused on adding a new marathon grind every month.
The staffing up gives me some confidence even if D'Angelo isn't the most inspiring spokesman ever and I have tremendous confidence in Heretic. Honestly, I don't think the added grind would be painful at all if every duty commendation category had rewards on par with Diplomacy/Marauding and we saw new categories added once or twice a year.

They did borrow 40m ( in euros) to fund the cryptic buy. The 35m ( in euros) that PWE paid has paid off 26m of that debt ( that might be in dollars, i can't be arsed checking ) and the rest has gone ionto financing ongoing operations.
But I'm sure many of you remember me telling you about Atari never being able to afford this and i was right, again.
and it all comes back on cbs pushing out a game that was not ready. dident it take 5 years for wow to make it and then release it? we all know sto was not ready. cbs would have pulled the ip and no sto. atleast pwe knows mmo and this game will go into full glory

My point was that what Atari tells its shareholders is designed to keep them as shareholders. HP lost over $1 billion on the Palm purchase but it was HP's own actions that lead to that lost. Atari may have lost their but on Cryptic, but Atari didn't help it much.
In any case, this is why I invest in mutual funds. Less likely to lose my butt.

At some point, somebody at Atari should have questioned developing four MMOs simultaneously and whether rapidly releases would mean breaking even much faster than a five year development cycle.
I don't think they were very pragmatic or informed with regards to their investment when they picked up Cryptic or that they understood what an MMO meant in terms of ongoing commitment.

The game is still broken, new players have old content that will soon be old content. the old problems will resume soon.
