This idea was brought up before, I think some players want more non combat game play in STO.
In Voyager they entered the Delta Flier in a race held by three factions that just ended a war. They were competing to help promote peace. This idea would take place in the neutral zone.
It would be is in a sector and captains would go there to test theirs ships against others. Both Federation and Klingon could compete with and against each other. It would be considered a safe zone and the factions wouldn't attack each other there.
It wouldn't have to be very complicated just some flashing buoy's for the coarse. With a cork TRIBBLE going down or up. Through a asteroid field, some would cross the track and could impact your ship slowing you. Or maybe destroying your ship and knocking you out of the race. With maybe two routes one to avoid asteroids but would be longer.
Also through a nebula that would slow your ship like in the Briar Patch mission. A few power up rings could be added like in the Devian featured episode, when you sling shot around the sun to go back in time. A incline in the track of the maximum climb rate for ships.
There would be a few rules like if you left the track you are disqualified. There would need to be a finish line and a timer. So players could go for records in classes and all around fastest time.
With cruisers inertia drift this could be a lot of fun. It would also give you something else to do with shuttles and fighters. It could also be a reason to make alt's with traits just for racing. Or a new build for a parked character.
It could be another social aspect where you could go just to watch and chat or to compete. This would be game play with high replay value.
Would like a sorta race introduced that was kinda like a fun orientated race that loved games (sure theres one or two in trek) that had on the ground mini games like racing or fun fair kinda thing like shoot to win a prize kinda stall etc and in space around it was things like ring races around a sun and back or whatever (have some hazards too like a area of plasma to slow ppl down if they didnt do the right way or somit) and there must be a leader board to show the daily high rankers otherwise its boring without trying to beat a time or person, i vote for times tho. It must be persistent not instanced as well.
Like I said in the OP the Delta Flier enter a race in Voyager. It had nothing to do with Star Wars.
pew pew!
It's a none starter unless you allow for craft modifications and rewards leading to such otherwise what would be the point of racing identical ships young padawan?

Different builds, batteries, engines, ships and traits you can do many different things to get different results. Not to mention racing at different tiers.
That was also the reason for different routes and the power rings from the featured episode. The coarse can also factor into the races.

Englebert my darliing, please don't think i'm winding you up. You were always one of my favourites and quick to back me up back in the days when i was fighting the corporate Cryptic bullcrap ( and here I am with every opportunity to tell them "I told you so"
I think the idea has merit, and I would certainly enjoy racing my delta flyer or peregrin falcon against others. I think you could get enough variety with the addition of 2 -3 more shuttle-sized ships mixed with the variations in consoles everyone equips.
There really is many ways you could modify ships and builds for racing. Things like using batteries emergency power to engines, powers up on the coarse. Consoles for engine power or turning. Then there would be the different classes of ships to race with. I think the replay on something like this would be very high.
Maybe they could allow a few abilities like tractor beams, repulsors and power siphon. For a contact type of racing. There really is a lot that could be done with it.

I think it would be really fun. It would give players something other than combat to do.
So here's my +1 vote for this idea.
