@Handles and Characters - People and Twinks

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Hi,
the seperation of @Handles (Players) and Chars (Alts) is sometimes confusing and inefficient.

I don't like...

1. ... that I cannot sort people by @handle in the fleet roster. In the fleet rooster I am interested in people, not in their hundreds of twinks.

2. ... that mails to the fleet or @handle are multiplied for each char/twink (see next point).

3. ...it to receive mails about expired exchange items, but I need to be logged in with the associated char to claim the items (wasn't like this in former times).

Discuss. :-)

Have Fun

I prefer the @handle system for one major reason; if some yahoo is already running around with the name I want (ex. Jefferson), I don't have to spell it in Moonspeak to use it (ex. J3Ff3Rs0n).

That said, some additional @handle based organizational options would be wonderful, as the points you raise are valid.

"Twink" usually refers to a low level alt who has been the beneficiary of a high level alt's favors and is itself a reference to gigolos with male benefactors.

I'd stick with "toon" or "alt" or "character" or "char" to avoid ambiguity there.

But I do like that I don't need to select a unique character name. Unique to Account only :)

    Aye, Fixed, that one...

@Handle was one of Cryptic's best inventions. MMOs have always been plagued with "the name you wanted is already taken!" -- until @Handle. I'd call it the biggest MMO innovation of...whenever Champions came out, 2009?

Having said that, more functionalities would of course always be welcome.

Aye, I just want some useful organizational options. That @handle based system is fine, but sometimes (I listed the reasons above) you are directing to a person (@handle), sometimes to a char (alt/toon/... whatever).

Whenever I go to other MMOs, I just can't imagine why no one but Cryptic uses a system like this. Where is the fun in people hogging all the "actual" names, or promoting people to run around with "names" like "Icanhealu" or other mangling of words, 1337 speak, or random numbers.

    Moving along...
Some organization might be kinda nice. I can't imagine it'd be terribly hard either, but probably not a high priority.

I just wish I could change my handle from @BlackV7 to @The Most Interesting Man :(

but I'm afraid any attempt will just TRIBBLE up my account, aside from a few things on my end.

Except a player has ABSOLUTELY ZERO privacy, and it makes it harder to RP at times.

I play characters who are very different from one another. I've even RPed with the same player on different characters in different MMOs and those players had no idea I was the person behind those characters. Some characters I even have for solo play, where I can hop on, play the game, and not have lots of people send me /tells.

Here, *everybody* knows *all* the characters I play. There's absolutely *no* privacy. Even setting on the "anonymous" feature (which is an absolute joke) doesn't help. As soon as you log into character select, it says "@username has logged on" to everyone on your friend list. Only when you actually *enter* the game does it go 'anonymous', but then sends "@username has logged off". So, again, everybody on your FL knows you're here. Also, the anonymous feature does *not* work with people who use the outside messenger programs. Want to just come on for an hour of play and not be bothered? Want to play an alt nobody knows about? Can't happen if you have even one person on your FL.

And the fact that CO, CO's Test, and Tribble are all tied to the system doesn't help either. Want to do some serious bug testing on Tribble without people talking to you? Won't happen.

Sorry, the @handle is the *worst* thing Cryptic has done for MMOs and I'm *very* glad it's not implemented elsewhere in this form.

Now, the problem with "not a high priority" is, that it would never be fixed. But at least the feature to sort players by handle in the fleet roster shouldn't be hard to implement and would be a great enhancement.

I've got to agree. It makes alting much easier, and allows you to tell if you've teamed with or met someone before. Plus, again, you can call your characters whatever you want without worrying about someone having taken that name!
