Star Trek Vanguard Book 1 was finished off by me at about 11:30 last night. I'd like to do a review here, but was unsure what you all would think about it. Would you like to start a book review thread where we each discuss our favorite, or hated, Star Trek books?

Well, I'll give my short review of the first Vanguard book..

    SPOILERS ABOUND!!!!!!

    The Good
The story of the Bombay being destroyed. Seeing the battle from the perspective of the rest of the crew first and then seeing the entire battle from the perspective from the perspective of the bridge crew was outstanding. After the battle was over you think back to that doctor who was sitting in sick bay bored. Did he make it to an injured crewman and patch him up just in time for the ship to explode? Great way to handle that battle.

    The Bad
The research facility that is really a listening post that really is a crater. Seriously, I didn't believe that it was a listening post used against the Klingons as I was reading the words for the first time. Why? 1) Why would the Tholians care about a listening post used against the Klingons? Of all the things to fight over, that isn't it. 2) I actually remembered the beginning of the book and knew it had to do with the mold with extra DNA.

    The Ugly
Journalist sleaze. The man is having an affair with another married woman and falls in love with her. He then runs all over the station trying to hide that fact after his mistress is killed when the Bombay popped and then lies to his own wife and the mistress's husband to cover his own but. Only for his grand search for truth to lead him to print a story that even by New York Times standards is flimsy. He deserved to be fired and tossed out on his butt by his soon to be ex-wife! Sorry, dude. But I find it sad that I look at your buddy, the Orion Syndicate tool, and I feel sorry for him having to hang out with you.

    The Pointless
TRIBBLE Vulcan chick. I understand there is a need to add a little more depth to the character, but I think a Federation ambassador having the katra of a former "lover" locked up in her head was depth enough. Add in the fact she seems to be Batman in her abilities to show up at the right moment, and I think she's the go-to plot device. On top of that, the scene were we find out she's in love with the Klingon spy is toward the end of the last chapter and last for all of three paragraphs! If it was supposed to be a teaser, it worked. Now I think she really is a Romulan. This short scene could have been put in the next book and I think it would have been better.

    The Absent
I found myself enjoying the Kirk and Spock scenes more than anything. For a book based on the adventures of Kirk and company, we don't see much of them. Some of the more pointless scenes could have been moved over to Kirk. I would have been more interesting.

But I bought book two for my Kindle. I'm hoping we'll learn some more about the Iconions as we go along (that part was a joke).
