Log-in queues

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I've recently had my first "waiting in queue" messages when logging into STO. I think that's good news in a way because that means lots of people are playing :D (Of course that's just short term - long term I hope nobody has to wait in line :))

Anyway, just now I was 2 out of 1116, and I got in almost immediately. Does that mean I cut to the front of the line because I'm a gold member? If so, well worth the $15

With the Steam intro this week, and the Anniversary Event coming to a close tomorrow, I'm assuming there are tons of people trying to get those free ships. But it should die down in about 4.5 hours. :)

Guess after the server crash they've set the queue threshold a good bunch lower than before.

The crash yesterday was related to a database optimization that we put in to help improve peak capacity. We turned off that optimization after restarting, so the capacity of the game is slightly lower until we get a fix live at the next restart. We lowered the population cap to account for the reduced capacity, but it is not very much lower than it was yesterday.

Please could you confirm... this is temporary?

We will continue to increase capacity over the coming weeks. We have a bunch more software optimizations that are in testing or development right now. Our goal is to never have players wait in a queue, and we will keep working on it until we get there. That being said, the wait for silver players is pretty short even with over 1000 in the queue.

Can you confirm that next Saturday when the FE's are returning after a year hiatus, the server won't crash like it did pre-f2p when the FE's were released?

How many players are there on the sto server at anyone time tho?, Just curious.

Unfortunately, I think they will never just out and tell us for all sorts of reasons. I will admit I am just as curious, and as angry as I get about things with this game, I still want it to succeed very much so. While login queues suck, I am proud we are hitting them regardless of the number of peeps on because it tells us that it definitely was more than it was yesterday or the week before or whatever.. and that has got to be good.

This is the first time I've seen a queue with STO, though I have read it has happened, and I smiled. No sense in getting mad about it, just like with any MMO they'll tweak it or throw hardware at it or both and we'll be back in business after a few weeks at the most.

it's not even that long a wait, most of the time, so what's the big deal?

That's great, thank you :) And yes the wait was pretty short, no great problem, was just curious as to how long a timeframe was expected.

honestly, the fact that there are server queues shows that population is generally up.

hopefully that population will stay increased, its been much busier in the last few weeks in general than December was, just from the amount of instances and players visable in social hubs..

I just hope "the community" doesnt start the endless bickering, finger pointing and name calling that seems to appear the second anything doesnt work absolutely perfectly in this game, because that will solve the "log in queue" problem by driving people away.

I expect even with software optimisation that queues will be possible next weekend with the FE launch.

the only people who will be waiting are the F2P crowd, cryptic put in place incentives so you dont have to wait IE the subscription process.

That is the reason they put in "priority access" so if you dont want to wait then subscribe if you dont want to subscribe then dont complain.

I hope the whole front of queue thing doesn't end up an a la carte option in the C-Store.

Your queue position is 688 out of 690.

Not worth it, even for free.

Better get it sorted pronot, otherwise u wil loose players. And its nio enabling some players to do the q event either is that fair ???? Don't think so

Well, if the queue isn't enough, my hotbar is all messed up, AGAIN.

Every time I log in, no matter which character, my skill bars are all rearranged into some random order. I will NOT rearrange them again.

Like I said before, not worth it, even for FREE.

Log in. Press "P". Check the little box that says "Lock". This will help immensely, though you will still find situations where you will need to reassign your Boffs to their correct stations when switching ships.

I'm happy to see the area's filled up!... I just came back to playing and went F2P... after I realized i wanted to respec I re-upt for 1 month to get the benifits of that plus all the other goodies bag space vault space etc... But I did notice a que on Sunday... being as I'm now a gold member... Should I even see this que window? I was 2 of 1108 or something to that... but that's not what bothered me... I thought it was "NO" que... Just want to make sure I'm getting all my benifits and not just some of them. If it's front of the line for Gold...I'm completely happy with that as long as all other gold members are also seeing the same.

Hey Cryptic, you guys say this:
    Priority Login Free [?]
Gold Members bypass login queue and can log directly into the game.
and then do this, so which is it? And why do you guys think it's OK to promise one thing then do another?

    I'm just curious.... ya'know?

As a gold I was quite pleased to not have to wait in line behind 1200 other people yesterday. Don't see how any sub can view waiting a few extra second as any more than an extremely minor irritation.

Edit: "bypass" is one of those tricky English words. Does it mean cut in front of the nonsubs, or jut get shoved straight through regardless of server capacity...* shrugs*

Well, you know, if the words "Login Directly" weren't there in the feature description, I could agree with you that the word 'bypass' is open to interpretation... however, since they do promise to have us "Login Directly" and for some that is clearly not the case, they obviously say one thing and... well... do another.

Regarding waiting a few extra seconds and seeing it as an extremely minor irritation, that's not even the issue. You see if I have more than one games to play and limited playtime, whenever I'll see a queue in STO, I will simply cancel the log-in request and go play something else because my time is precious to me and the latest trend of disconnects I've experienced in STO and waiting-time in queues aren't contributing to a pleasant user-experience in a game I've supported in various ways before it even launched!

You do realize that if you log in when the server if full, the best Cryptic can do is push you to the front of the wait list. When the server is full, it's full, and you cannot get in until someone logs out. Think of it as an amusement park where you can get on a roller coaster via the exit, bypassing the waiting line. If the roller coaster ride is currently full/in-progress, you have to wait for the coaster to stop and someone to get off before you can get on.

There is really no way around this. Cryptic certainly isn't going to reserve you a spot when they have no way of knowing if/when you are going to play.

Reserve me a spot??? Heck, they can't even keep their game stable enough not to have map-transfer errors or simple disconnects that never used to happen to me before F2P. Believe me, as a software engineer, I understand network stress and queues and all that. What I don't understand is why they keep promising things they should well know they cannot supply! That's no way to build a user-experience which will convince people to keep buying their stuff.

About what you said earlier in your post regarding not being able to plug someone into the game, well, I hate to tell you but in essence it's definitely possible to take someone off the game and put someone else in instead! Like anazonda said:
    anazonda wrote: »
TBH I see no reason for this to happen... In all honesty I truely belive that any F2P player not currently in a mission (of any kind apart from the DuOff system), should simply be ditched from the server to make room for gold members when they try to log in.

People who pay for playing a online game shouldn have to stand in queue to do so when F2P non-subscribers are taking up space...

Flame me for saying that... I don't care... Deep down you know I am right.
Cryptic has increasingly degraded the value of a paid subscription versus a free account so much so that even the basic SLA is devalued, so the very least they could do is be honest about it, you know?

Oh wait, never mind... what am I saying? It's an MMO and the EULA/TOS already cover all this... carry on Cryptic, keep spitting in our face and telling us it's rain. ;)

Everyone knows it's technically possible, but Cryptic isn't going to boot someone just to let you log in.

And while I'm here, you are not going to get any argument from me on the state of the game, including but not limited to no support, bugs, lack of content, and broken promises. But for this case, you cannot really expect anything more than being moved to the front of the wait queue. Cryptic cannot reserve spots or intentionally kick people that are already playing.

What I realistically expect is Cryptic modifying the F2P Feature Matrix to say that Gold members would be placed higher in the queue, but to be honest, that's not going to make things better and even once more servers are added (if they ever will be), Cryptic is losing our faith and good will in the long run. To be honest though, I'm not really sure they can afford to care anymore.
