2 Year Event - Why am I not excited

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
While reading this, it is important to understand that I am not ranting... I am seeking answers.

At the one year anniversary, I was excited... In fact I was standing ready waiting for Q to appear in ESD and have all the fun they promised us, and they succeeded. I had a blast.

This year I was equally excited, and could'n wait for it... Q was coming... Good times.

However, for some reason I am not excited anymore.

It is really weird, cause I am having fun with this years event than last year. I love finding the little Q's and hunting them to extinction (even when they turn into tribbles).
In fact... I think it is the best event so far.

So why am I not excited... why is it that I can't find the spirit there was last year?

There's your answer imho. The first year of STO, when it was in its prime. The new ESD (though I still prefer the 2409 ESD), and the celebration fo Year One meant a lot more than it does now. STO is just in another year now, more a of a "Meh, year 2, whatever..." instead of the "OMG THE FIRST YEAR MARK WOOOOO" that we all hopefully felt a year ago.

STO imo has become dull, there is the problem at hand, it's nothing new to us now...hell Q is even overused now...he's here every other few weeks or so (or feels like it).. things are just getting re-used over and over, and after a year of no true content I can't image why others must feel the same way. A new FE finally coming ending the drought (and possibly starting anew?) might be what we all need, but for now, as I stated, STO is nothing new anymore...we're just "used to it."

    My 2 cents.

Ever gone to a major sporting event? Say, NFL, NCAA football, MLB? That first time you go you are so excited and you enjoy yourself even if the game is a disappointment. But by the time you get to your fifth or sixth trip, then your enjoyment is dependent on the outcome of the game.

It was fun last year because it was new. While it is still a fun thing to do, that "first time" excitement isn't going to be there.

Nope... I regularily go to other events of diffrent sorts however... Get excited every time, cause it's diffrent.

I am by no means dissapointed in what is out this year... I just dont feel the "yay" feeling. I also didn have it when the game launched now that I think of it.

Edit: and as said, i still have huge fun chaseing mini Q's

The magic of dimishing utility I suppose.

Wait until this time next week. "The 2800" ought to inject a little more novelty and excitement than a few stray Qs.

i know in my case any chance of excitement at the 2nd anniversary is completely swamped with the anticipation of the new FE next week..

the anniversary event, well it feels half-hearted this year, like they put something together because "they had to" or something.. thats not to say its not fun, the banners are awesome and the Odyssey class launch was good and its quite fun to run around ESD as an undine or spider.. but its basically the same concept as last year, and as i said, right now i'm more excited about the FE.

maybe thats why you're not "feeling it" this year too?

Well, I'll admit, I've only done the Q event once this year... and, to be honest, it wasn't that awesome. It feels like they spent 5 minutes putting together a simple quest, and threw "Q" at the problem. Q is being overused... for every event, and they need to stop doing that. It's gotten old.

It took me until tonight to even bother doing any of the Anniversery stuff, and I'm only really doing it now because I'm on to get the new Enterprise. So... all in all, not a great event. It feels like they put more effort into the one last year...

It is not as novel. You probably do not have as much interaction with the Devs. It is not such an exploration of a relatively new and unknown game but just the continued relationship with a game you have come to know very well. Your view of everything is probably a little more critical now and less childish with unfettered hopes and expectations running wild in your head.

Not to talk too much about other MMO's but when I played EVE I can say that the first few months were the most fun I had in that game without a doubt. Learning all the new stuff, setting up new ships with new weapons, doing new things every day... After that novelty and fun was over and it got into the long drawn-out grind fest it stopped being fun anymore... It was just a chore to get to the next goal with no real joy to be had...

I think almost any MMO can suffer that feeling and it can feel that way here in STO as well. It is not that you are not interested in playing or even failing to have fun with the game as a whole or the events but that familiarity and lack of surprise and novelty just leaves it feeling a bit less exciting... It is the difference between hoping into a new car and driving down a road you've never been down as opposed to driving the car you've driven for YEARS down a new road you've never been down. The new road is interesting either way but driving that new car is far more exciting than just seeing a new road.

Part of it might be that we just had a Q event, over Xmas. We didn't have that last year. I know that was part of it for me.

I fear Cryptic is at serious risk of overusing Q. Next big event of this type should be run by Admiral Quinn and Chancellor J'mpok. Or if not them, ANYONE ELSE EXCEPT FOR Q.

Q has better things to do that constantly throw us parties. The writers of TNG knew that, and tried to use him sparingly for fear of making the fan base bored with him. Cryptic is risking giving us that very boredom.

There's truth here. The only thing is it would generally require creating two events (imagine running the winter race on Andoria and Rura Penthe). That's a resource issue, and cross-faction players couldn't hang out.

Also, how would that work? Quinn and J'mpok aren't going to order us to go have fun. Now, if they found a random (maybe even already existing) NPC on ESD and the First City to say, "Hey, all the cool kids are going to Andoria for a party." I would have no problem with that.

There was a lot of optimism last year, but unfortunately the months that followed drained most people's enthusiasm for the future. Despite the release of the flagships this year, excitement does seem lower than what was found at the first anniversary.

I think if Cryptic ever has more and fresher meat for people to sink their teeth into, that excitement will return.

    Bring on the 3rd anniversary!:D

    Sounds like a personal problem.

This game is what you make of it, the fun you find in this game is what you make of it, the excitement is what you make of it.

I've made a choice to have fun, be excited, and enjoy the experience of this second year.

I am reminded of a line from a Song...

Same as it ever was... Same as it Ever, was....

its a rehash, of what we had last year with a couple of new bits added on to make it "new". Actually reminds me of the "improved" tutorial. That wasn't.

Might just be burnt out. Happens to me every few months. Might be best to put it down for a while, do something else, or better yet, something different, even if it means missing out on some events.

Keeping busy with something else has the added advantage of passing the time so the game can develop without having to sit and watch it move at an agonizing pace. I missed out on the entire initial run of the Breen series, but when I did come back, the Devidians were in full swing and I was loving it again.

Seems you think that I do not enjoy the game. This is not the case. I do... otherwise I would not log in every day. My focus in this thread is about the 2 year anniversary event.

    It felt 'half-done' to me...

They should have just paid somebody, to be able to use the music from TMP for the Odyessy Unveiling...

They should have reversed Q's Dancing toons between ESD & First City...

They should have added New Music to Club-47... (man, that tune is getting Really Old)...

They should have added a party atmosphere to Quark's at DS-9 some how...
(as well as Leeta and the Dabo Screaming)

They should have added MORN to a seat at Quark's...

They should have had the BORTAS already outside the window... (THAT was a Really Big Boo-Boo)...

They should have made the Red-Light District of First City, a complete party zone... (PvP Fights and Dancin'g Orion Women everywhere)...

They should have... (add your own reasonable idea here...)

It was just Lacking..., in a more-than obvious manner... IMHO.

Well it's likely either burnout or overly high expectations for the event in question. And if you're pretty sure it's not the former, my money's on the latter. In which case, there's really nothing anyone can tell you about the "why".

Why ARE there so few episode missions? I've played them all and they really aren't anything too complex. There isn't really even any gameplay variety in them. Seems like there should be many many more.

Most of the actual storyline missions are rushed, because of a very long story involving the original studio creating STO and a pony.

Basically Cryptic had WAY too little time to create a full game...

If you look at some of the more recent missions (Stranded in space, Doomsday Device, Breen Series, Romulan "Cloaked Intentions" and Devidian series), the quality is raised immensely and have actually served to improove STO both in entertainment and tech.
