What does Critical Severity actually mean? and how does this back up to Accuracy? Meaning what would you want more of that is better. Accuracy or Critical Severity in a ship weapons Systems
critical severity meas that it if you hit with a critical the severity of the hit would be higher than a normal critical by the % of the severity bonus. accuracy depends on the target some targets will have a high defense that will cancel out your accuracy bonus but this also works both ways. i always go critical for dps as this can helps with the misses that i have.

Why not go with accuracy, so you don't miss in the first place?
From what I've learned in WoW, accuracy is king when it comes to actual DPS. It even increases your crit chance against slower targets, as excess accuracy is converted to crit... [citation needed], as I may have misread how the attack tables work out.
Big numbers are fun, but constant numbers are better. This is especially true when dealing with those ridiculously evasive high yield plasma torpedoes.
Critical Chance is your chance to land a critical hit.
Critical Severity is how much more damage you deal when you land a critical. So, 50% severity means your critcals deal +50% damage.
Accuracy is your chance to hit. Defense improves your chance to be misses. They counter each other. Accuracy and Defense only work in space (there is no missing in ground combat RPG mode, and Shooter mode is entirely player-skill driven).
If your chance to hit a target is over 100%, your Accuracy overflow is added to both your Critical Chance and Critical severity.
The exact math was discusses in Episode 76 of STOked:

Species really.
Unless you want to go from Homo Sapiens Sapiens to Homo Habilis.
(ok so it's not really correct... Caucasian>Asian is a race change. Human>Ferengi is species change.)
this is why acc 3 is best, acc 2 too if you can get it. it allows you a better chance to hit when your target is at its speediest, and hits hard like the the crit modifier weapon when you get your target slowed down. works all the time as opposed to the crit modifiers. dam mod is still nearly worthless, it needs another buff

My understanding is CritD is For when you crit How Hard it will be.
e.g
kicking someone in the shins is default attack
missing and kicking in the balls is crit
kicking with steel tipped boots is severity
As in the damage done when you get a crit.
And for me accuracy is more important. Getting a 200% critical once in a while is not as important as hitting the enemy.
HAH! Love it!
It explains it so well.

thats going to be my new sig. thank you for that nugget of gold.

Hmmm.... So when can we get Character Trait Respec!!!
Yeah I'd like to trade in my Efficient Captain trait for a trait that actually does something noticeable.
Sure am glad I took the Accurate trait though.:D
Or for that matter, Race change ?

I don't think I've ever used crit severity, as it seems that you need a high crit chance first to make severity worth while.
I could see using a purple antiproton weapon with: Crit Chance X2, Crit Severity X1.
That ought to rock right?
