Romulans introduce the plasma torpedo, which can catch someone off guard if they're not used to destroyable torpedoes that pack a massive whallop when they land.
DIfferent damage output, different tactics, and welcome to NPCs that can cloak under fire (cheeseball tactics, considering that neither the Fed or KDF cloakers can do that).
I've never been one-shot by a double-d. People need to learn how and when to use epts or science team. Torps do minimal damage against shields so when you see the barrage coming at you adjust and buff. The game has things like brace for impact, polarize hull, etc for a reason.
Each species requires different tactics. You can't fight Roms the same way you do Klinks, and that carries on throughout the game. Borg need different tactics then Trueway, and so on. If someone thinks they can just push the same 4 buttons from 0 to 50 and everything will be the same they're in for a disappointment.
The Romulan series can be a dog... but by the time you get up towards the end of that series, you'll be owning all those Mogai's... and will be proud of it...
Keep at it, I do them on elite difficulty now, and leveled my science captain on that setting... it took a lot of repairing / retrying to get through a few of those

To assume that the experience remains the same for everyone is to deny the obvious... they change the game and the effects more than any game I've ever seen or played...
I get one-shot by platforms still when on elite difficulty and have been here since beta, and have deleted more VA's than most people have played...
There is no single tactic, there is no single technique, there is no secret formula, there is no uber... That's fallacy and once in a while you just get your TRIBBLE kicked trying to find what works for you...
People aren't always doing it wrong... They are just experiencing the game...
If I could lend any "secret tips" for your first time through the Romulan series... it would be to purchase the automated defense turret and use it in your Tactical console... the sacrifice of damage stinks, but it will frequently stop the plasma torpedoes which are the bane of any Romulan Alpha...
I think the C-store still sells them, or that one of the ships you can buy has a similar console...
I know "spend money" is a disappointing answer, but I put one on all my new chars when I level a new one through that series, and it always pays off...
And the Science BO skills 'Polarize Hull' & 'Hazard Emitters' (which you could get by without in the Klingon story arc) become really useful against Romulans and the other more advance enemies (e.g. Borg, Breen) that will be encountered...

If the OP fails at captain in one of the free tier 4 ships, at normal level, he IS doing it wrong. Perhaps he should be mashing his face toward the top half of the keyboard where the numbers to fire weapons are.
OP, check your settings (difficulty) and that you didn't have a vice admiral friend in your party when you started a mission.

Someone should retry the Romulan series on elite, then you'll see what people talk about when it comes to being one-shot. And sometimes you can't even prevent it, as it seems some of their ships are equipped with photon torpedoes while the rest are plasma. You can't shoot down high yield photon torpedoes, and with the massive damage they do on Elite, shields are practically worthless. The Borg tell you to lower your shields, the Romulans do it for you by force.
I'm not sure where you are in the mission chain, OP, but if you're not halfway through it, it's only going to get worse before you're finished.
Also, for plasma torpedoes, I recommend redoing the Klingon mission which gives you the hybrid plasma-disruptor arrays and stick them on the back of your ship. They've got a massive boost to accuracy, so it shouldn't take more than one volley to bring a torpedo down. Save Fire at Will for the ships that fire off three or four torpedoes at once.

I've only played on elite since the difficulty system was implemented. Fighting an AI is still fighting an AI. Giving an AI ship more damage resistance doesn't change things that much. It simply means you need to understand what your abilities are.

Have you run the Romulan series since the last patch where torpedoes are hitting in volleys at 15k damage?
Have a looksy at the three hundred beelion threads about out of control damage post-patch before you assume that the person must be hitting the idiot button wrong...
Thanks for the input going to give the info a run, didnt notice till last night that I could be joined by a higher ranked player fortunatly they hung and assisted which made it fun. cant give this game up been waiting for this since pong came out, going to work on upgrading my ship yeah some of what I have is outdated.
As a new player of STO, but by no means a new gamer, going into Romulan space in a freshly outfitted Defiance, after the first story arcs, was a bit of a rude surprise. Sure i learned to compensate for HPT spam, but even wary as I am now I find that escorts and battleships will occasionally spam abilities that will leave me waiting to respawn.
One tip I can offer as an escort pilot, is to keep the Hargh'peng torpedo launcher in your aft tubes. The AOE that it fires off after a few seconds is very effective at killing inbound enemy Plasma Torpedos and while it's damage is a bit lacking compared to other torpedos at my current level, that feature alone keeps it on my ship.

Without any substantial information from the OP, its pretty much guessing all the way.

You go from being able to stay AFK and win a fight to having to press a few buttons. It's not very difficult.
