It's that time of year, when a large portion of the population files their taxes, and gets a nice disposable check back from the government. Perfect time to launch a Lifetime Sub sale in order to tempt people out of that money while they have it handy.
There really aren't any special things that would make a lifetime sub worthwhile since F2P. With F2P you're paying for a playable borg captain, a badge, 2 character slots (that you can buy on the C-store), and access to the Captain's table. All for the price of ~16000 Cryptic points.
As much as I like STO, as much as I would have agreed with you a year ago, there's no point now.
In all truth, the benefits of lifetime membership from F2P forward aren't worth it unless you plan to play for 2-3 years (where by would would re-coup your investment via the 400c store point stipend.)
As much as I enjoy Star Trek (wish I discovered this game earlier heh), I would prefer a monthly subscription than a 299 USD lumpsum payment, especially if it were non refundable. There's no guarantee that I'll be as active in playing STO daily like I do now, a year later.
I agree that the lifetime subscription is definitely relevant for a first-adopters' investment option. But then, I would have faced a not 100% complete game and the usual bugs along the way.
You also get the lifetime combadge, "Career Officer" in-game title and 400CP a month. Not to mention you wont have to worry about having an active account for veteran rewards anymore.
And about the "investment". It's not the frickin stock market or a lifestyle change, it IS just a game, it's not that big of a deal. For example my buddy keep's buying custom parts for his motorcycle, I think it's pointless as the bike already has what it needs. Why spend a few hundred bucks on new mirrors when someone can come along and crack one or he can crash and destroy everything altogether? But, more power to him if that's what he chooses to spend his money on.

i bought a LTS at launch, and i have 11 character slots right now and have never bought any. those vet rewards add up over time. we get free VA ships, and if you sub 1000 days you get a unique exclusive variant ship.

If I had been here at launch I probably would have bought one too. But now, it doesn't make as much sense.

Other then the money you would save by making all the comparable characters over a long period of time, your right. If someone played for say 2 years, then an LTS would be the way to go.
There's no guarantee the game will even still be alive by the end of the year. That's the worst case scenario, of course, but the point is that there's little reason to invest in the lifetime membership now, especially as the majority of the content is accessible for free.
I'd love to see a sale on the c-store content though. It makes sense to do it before many of the F2P players move on.

Yes, especially where there are a lot of gaming sites out there that keep going on and on about the limitations of STO gameplay... there has to be something to woo them and keep them here. IMO, as a new player, STO offers a lot of free content and excellent long lasting gameplay.
The levelling is... almost too fast! Compared to the sluggish pace of certain Asian MMOs.
I don't find anything frustrating about the game. But I do want more reason to pay a monthly subscription

Don't forget to tell them about the free back massages and donuts we get in the downstairs rooms at ESD. Or are we not supposed to tell them about that??

What's cool to some is lame to others.

We're not supposed to tell them about that.
