The coloured bits in skill tree.

A bit confused about the coloured bits in the skill tree, returning after a while to find all the skill points have been refunded and i've no idea where to put the points in, as far as the green/amber/red,
do i need to put them in the red part to get to the next skill? as it looks if i do i lose some bonuses.
Anyone enlighten me or provide a link please.
Many thanks.

The only prerequisite to get to a higher tier of skills is how many you've spent total.

If you look at the bonuses you gain, you get the highest bonus from the green points, slightly less from yellow, and the lowest from red. In general, yellow is the ideal and, and red is reserved for absolute must-haves (like if you want to max out DPS for an escort build).

Read the skill descriptions, they tell you what they unlock (i.e 6 points in certain skills will unlock an ability you can train a BOFF). You only have to spend a certain amount of skill points total (it says at the very top of each column how much) to reach the next rank, but you can spend them as you wish in indivudal skills.

Why the hell did they change it :)
it was easier to understand, every point you put in raised the skill why all this coloured TRIBBLE,

so if i put points in the red bit i lose bonus but do i gain anything else?
i also noticed that out of the few skills you get now some are useless to me coz i never use anything they give bonus to so where the hell do i put my skill points then why didn't they leave it as before, i had lots of options of where to put my skill points and only put them in what i needed.
Now all they've done is confuse the hell out of me.

Sorry for the noobness but i can't seem to find any written info i can read that explains it.

Same as before, you gain for every step, but after a certain point, just like before you gain less for each extra step. That didn't change at all.

Notice the lesser bonus as you put in more points. The first points gain the most the last are just to top off the skill.

Yeah don't look at the colors and think good/neutral/bad, think high/medium/low efficiency. Keeping your skills 'in the green" means you are getting the most stat points per skill point spent. The yellow zone gives you less stat points per skill point, and the red zone is the area with the most diminishing returns. Meaning the first 3 points you invest in a particular skill give a lot more bang for the buck than the next, 3, which in turn still give better returns than the last 3.

As to your complaints about the rework of the skill tree, I must say it seems you are in the minority here as most find the new skill layout much more useful and intuitive. Take some time and read the descriptions that come with each skill, they do a much, much better job of describing what benefits you gain for investing in that skill. Almost everyone agrees it's much clearer now. If you search on this forum you will also find a link to a great online skill planner where you can experiment with putting points into various skills, to plan out your point distribution before you finalize it on your character.

And yes, there are some skills that you simply won't find useful or interesting (inertial dampeners or threat generation, anyone?), and you shouldn't put points into them. In fact you are forced to skip over some skills since you only have so many to spend, and if you tried to invest in them all you wouldn't be able to really build up strength in any one area.

6 points in a skill learns you the skill associated with it IF your capatain can train other BO's, so for those skills, put 6, 6 is the "Optimal high" meaning at that point you spent the most efficient ammount of points, anything over that is what i dub "Min/max land" meaning unless yoru a min/maxer you really dont need those points.

so 3 or 6 points in skills are best when you can manage it, since only topping at 6 points lets you spend the other 3 points in something else meaning overall your a little better since you have more buffs all around.

the only skills i would probably do a 9 point max are the ones that boost HP and shields for ground and space, just for the better survivability.

personally i max any skill that gives me any kind of power boost, or speed/manuvourability.

but then i prefer to fly escorts like fighters, so its a personal preferance. only thing i would suggest people max is the driver coil for the increased sector space speed early on.

I put at least 6 points in all skills as i had to, to get to the next one, and put 7-8 in some just to use up the points,

i must say this is the first time i've played in months and i noticed an improvement in the damage i do and the less damage i recieve.

I do think someone should write up a guide for new or returning players since going free there has been some confusing changes, stick it on the front page so everyone can read it whenever they want,
coz unless you are a dedicated player and watch the forums all the time yopu can miss things that get buried in the vast vaults of the forums and can be hard to find.
