You know, the ones that are temporary? The timer that basically invalidates gold-pressed latinum as a currency? Yeah, how about those? I've only made two threads about them last year. Any chance of these getting made into permanent items so that latinum isn't completely worthless?
The usefulness of GPL in it's current state is pretty embarrassing. Such an overlooked opportunity. It would be a great way to obtain more personal vanity items or "black market" items. Perhaps more items for the ready room or personal quarters? Or maybe unique equipment that's not so easy to come by through the Federation or KDF.
...and yeah, holo-emitters should be a non-perishable device. Make it a worthwhile purchase.
I remember Borticus said that improving the holo ship timers wasn't gonna happen.
I believe it is sorta a CBS thing. They can't be "permanent" since they are not Federation or Klingon ships, and the CBS guy said that they had to be temporary or ultra rare to keep Federation space from being full of D'kora, Cargo and Jem'hadar ships.
Don't get me wrong, I want better Holo-Emitters also, but it's not gonna happen.

Then why bother having them in the first place? They're the most pointless vanity item in the game right now, and latinum as a currency is almost completely worthless as a result. More importantly, the shift in appearance goes away as soon as a ship enters red alert. It's not a permanent transformation by any means. If they're really that concerned about new players seeing Cardassian Galor-class ships flying around Sol, they could just increase the price of the emitters and limit their use to system space. The shimmer effect already makes it very apparent that it's not a real ship.
Beat me to it. I knew this would be the very first reply though hehe.
According to the STO Wiki, the timer on the holo-emitters will reset if you zone with the emitter deactivated. So as long as you don't use your emitter for >15 contiguous minutes, you can use it indefinitely. Don't know if that is a bug or by design... but it certainly is a total waste of GPL to spend 50,000+ on a 15-minute gimmick. At least in its "bugged" state the item lasts "forever".
As to the uselessness of GPL, I think the problem is that there are simply too many forms of currency in the game, despite their work to reverse that with the "new dilithium economy". We still have things like EDC/RBS, etc. that are only used for a few things, there is unreplicatable materials for crafting, etc. Basically there are only so many currencies that are needed to serve the needs of an economy, and since they have to tie dilithium into as many things as possible in order to remain solvent, GPL is just the one that gets left out.

Visually, they reset. Functionally, they don't. It will say 15 minutes, only to revert to the actual time remaining as soon as you use the item again.
I just wished they had a timer on these things or a tab by your ship that tells you how much time is remaining. Plus 15 minutes is way to short. I think for the price you pay for them, it should be at least a few hours (minimum an hour, maximum 3 hours, especially for the more rare/expensive ones) That way they still aren't 'permanent', but players are getting more bang for their GPLs so to speak. Plus at least they need to put a visual timer that you can see on these things, so you know how much time is left until the item is consumed.

They do, but only when they're equipped to your ship. The tooltip from the device slot and the icon in the power tray tell you how much time remains.

I really hate CBS, must they control everything. They cancel their series, they prevent developers from being creative etc... they're being too anal. I understand they are protecting their property rights, but damn, going too far in protecting.
I wonder how much royalty is CBS getting from Cryptic/PWE? I know they are getting something, its not like they are handing their licence for free.

I don't really hate them, but I agree that they're being far too over-reaching in this instance.
Holo Emitters are designed as a cash sink to get extra energy credits (in the form of Latinum) out of the economy. That's why they're so expensive and don't last for long. The only problem I have with it is that GPL isn't readily available, you have to gamble for it which kind of defeats the point of a cash sink.
Personally I haven't bought one yet as I have no need for it, but I can see what they're doing with them and why.
GPL NEEDS to be made into a currency that can be used to purchase dilithium on the black market. We have all this GPL - at least I have lots of it - for no useful reason. You can't use it on the exchange, you can't use it at vendors (except for the useless holoemitters) and it just seems like this was such a pointless game addition.
Several players and I bought some Gekli HEs yesterday under the assumption that they were no longer under a timer because there is no mention when you purchase of them lasting 15 minutes. I think I used mine off and on for a good 45 minutes during an STF.
I'm just wondering... is it certain they are on a timer still? Because we were using them for a while and they didn't disappear from our inventories. Also I didn't see any timer going in the little icon that appears under your ship with active ship powers. The only time it went away was when I died, but I would just turn it right back on.
So yeah... just wondering if they quietly removed the 15 minute restriction recently.
If they didn't then that's really bad because there is nothing indicating that you can't use them forever when you buy them, which is highly misleading.
edit: okay, so it is limited... but to 1 hour. I think it should be permanent, to be honest. I'm not sure why it's on a timer for that amount of GPL.

Also, buy a drink, maybe it'll bring you good luck!
Occasional DOff missions?
Is he allowed to put his hands on the hologram?

I'm still trying to find out what Energy Credits actually mean? LOL, give me some energy
