Will we see a huge flood of new accounts, or just a few hundred jump on deck?
I know when DCUO went F2P, they had a huge jump in players, and the wait time to log in put people in line of 4000 at times. Will this happen in STO?
they may have been so just when it went F2P is it still like that?...no are the server still as full as when it went F2P or they now like they where before hand?.....yes
will this happen to sto?....yes
will it stay like this for sto?.....no
game go F2P for a reason
this game has been selling for 10$ for a reson
Well it's far better than the 1st week of F2P on DCUO, that 4000 count to get in was nuts. I just hope we don't see that same type of que line to log into STO the day it's fully F2P, I know a few Trek fans that told me, they wouldn't play until it was free, now that it's going that way. My friends are getting ready to rock, and their friends and so on and so on. lol

Most games after going f2p see a drastic increase in numbers. I can list several mmos who did this recently and became much more popular and successful. Also, people who have criticized those games, have started to like them more.
Will this happen with STO? Yes it will.
One smart thing they did was to open up the ftp gates for prior subscribers early. Let them get in, check things out, and decide if they want to continue before the ftpers with no prior experience get into things.

When Age of Conan went F2P, Funcom one month later had reported to the media that 300,000 new accounts were created since.

key ??? is did they hold them account are they still have that many being made every month or is it like all game's that where P2P then go F2P after a few months after they are back to the same more or less then they where before F2P

I think it is since the f2p launch, but regardless, AoC had more problems than STO. Not to mention that the fantasy genre of games is starting to wear off and now sci-fi looks like the new future.
Like I said in previous posts, STO at least tries to be different than the mainstream mmorpgs, so people will try it out even if just out of curiosity.
At the end of the day however, the numbers will increase as it is a natural effect of the free to play transition.
Will this be a long lasting effect? Well, STO survived until now with a relatively small sub base, so I see no reason why the game won't after the large influx of free players arrive.
Cryptic needs to market the game properly before the 17th, though...
I have a better question: How many accounts do you see closing next month?
None, since Cryptic doesn't technically 'close' accounts. Remeber every rage quit thread that get's closed get's the "your stuff will still be here if you ever decide to come back" message.
Lot I think. This game had not enough content and was too bugged to pay for it regularly. But as free to play it's interesting alternative for other F2P MMOs out there. Especially for people who like space combat as STO has arguably the one of best space combat models. I returned as subscriber (although I have switched to F2P), but I already have some friends who quit the game some time ago returning to it.
IF Cryptic starts to add new content (for dedicated PvErs) and do something to make PvP enjoyable for common Joe the game may stay on market for long time. And earn a lot of money. P2W drive is powerful money sucker and even I may buy some Cryptic points IF I see it's worth it (so if the PvP is repaired or good new content is added).
I've been telling everybody I know about the 17-01 release date of STO F2P. I'm also a lifer and hope to see more people who enjoy the game as much as I do. One of my big questions I have for Cryptic is if they remember that old referral program? Could SUBSCRIBERS and or LIFERS ONLY get some kind of bonus or discount in C-Store Points if they refer a set amount of players who spend a set amount of money? I could see a bar being set at $10.00 as a requirement for the people a person refers to spend before the person who refers them gets a 10% discount or tier the discounts with the number of people they refer and spend money.
I don't know exactly how many are subscribed now and/or lifers, but I'm sure it will get a bump of over 1 million on the very first day. The more people who download it and begin to play it will tell their friends, then those friends will tell their friends to add to the community effect.
The episodes are great for people advancing in rank and thus will pull the new people in to the storyline of the era, however more people will come for large-scale fleet fights shooting over territory. What better way to spend time, money, and comaraderie then to FULLY engross into a raging war over territory that advances the overall storyline of the game?
I expect a flood of new people. I returned with early silver access because I had a subscription for two months, giving me early access. Many people were dissuaded from playing because of the 15$/month subscription fee, since they won't have to pay it, the only issues will be age and computer specifications. I think we'll see at least 1000 new players on the 17th. I can't wait for all the new players.
.... Well, STO survived until now with a relatively small sub base, so I see no reason why the game won't after the large influx of free players arrive.

So how many more accounts you see opening on Jan 17th?
Far more than anyone expects. Even Cryptic.
In all truth when 17-01 hits. I'm expecting the servers to go down. At the very least, I'm grateful I'm usually sleeping during primetime because ESD and DS9 are going to take FOREVER to load with all those people on there.
I think like most games that are either F2P or are going to become F2P, there will be the initial surge and for STO it will be very big.
It's free, it's a good IP, so it's going to be worth many peoples time to download and check it out.
That said, a lot of these new people will either have played and left already or know about STO's history which is negative to say the least. Even Cryptics name is said with derision and scorn when talked about in many forums. Great on character choices, poor on design and content. This will have an effect on people playing and staying.
Many will join and many will leave simply because it's free, however the mindset for F2P is that you don't feel the need to play a game as it's not costing you anything which means you tend to leave and play other things unless the game has plenty to do and is fun. Subs games subconciously make you play because you need to feel like your getting your monies worth (hence why so many lifers still hang around STO). Okay I am generalising, but I am sure some of you understand the point I am trying to make.
The final overiding factor isn't about the new accounts or how many stay, it's about what people spend. They could have a million new accounts made and 100s of 1000s of people playing, but if no one is buying anything, then the game will fail.
This is my worry that with lack of content and what we have being repetative, the only thing really going for STO is for those people that like the RP aspect.
I think this game will stay on life support indefinately.
Still, it's free and I ain't gonna $itch too much about the game anymore.
I will play and have fun for the limited fun factor the game offers, but I will never spend a penny and from the sounds of things, many others won't too...
Yes, foundry missions. But foundry itself is inaccessible for silvers and judging from the desription in faq on the website is still on tribble - so it will stay this way.
I have few years of experience in creating missions for Rebel Squadrons (X-Wing and TIE-Fighter games) and wanted to check STO foundry and ... nope, thank you very much,m this feature is not working either.
If foundry is STO salvation, then STO is already dead. Because there is no foundry.
Will we see a huge flood of new accounts, or just a few hundred jump on deck?

To answer your question, I'm guessing there will be several thousand new accounts.
I know for a fact that a good number of my warband clan members will be joining me (about 4-5). Have you tried to get any of your friends into the game by enticing them with the idea of playing STO for free?

I see STO doing the same, exploding out the gate and keeping a lot of players.
None, considering that unsubscribing won't, technically, be possible anymore

Its salvation lies in the Foundry:
