Turned on DirectX 11 in space everything is fine and much better but when I go to ground everyone's skins is a bit odd.

Just noticed the academy building has also gone black.

Is this my computer or the game?

Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 410M

Ever see the Wizard of Oz?

Im melting......melting......meeelllllllttttttiiiingggggg......oh what a world what a world........

Seriously probably just your settings.......in that they may need to be toned down a wee....I understand that while you may have top of the line hardware.....STO is kinda picky that way....just sayin...:D

Its to do with the lighting quality. If it is set low the problem is not visable.

This looks like it could be our known issue of "Shadows look blocky".
Would you say that all the other shadows you see in the game look similarly blocky?

    Thanks! :)

I noticed it doesn't occur with all rendering, it seems to pick and choose yet stays that way with certain elements......IE

    The faces

    The sky

Some buildings used over and over throughout similar missions

The lighting and shadow quality once dropped in setting seems to squash this to an extent.

At least thats what I have noticed...

    Does that help at all?

Saw it on face on Startup Screen, then running around ESD lots of blinky shadows. In space, saw it toward some of the "corners" of space while moving camera around starship. Changing lighting to low solved the issue.

    Thanks for the reply.

No I would say they look normal, took a screenshot so you can judge for yourself though.

Its normal for them to look slightly terrifying?

Suddenly I want to write a foundry mission about killer shadows...but I think Doctor Who already did one.

try beaming down to Starfleet Accademy... the whole map is flickering

and shadows are not the cause i turned them OFF -> no change

only when i deactivate dynamic lighting the black stuff in the faces and on the buildings goes away...

i interpreted the "shadows can be blocky" line in the patchnotes... that.... the actual shadows can be blocky, but i actually see no change there, i just thought that the Dev's only noticed this Problem now that some shadows IN SOME MAPS look more blocky than in other maps... but they did always in DX 9

Can you tell us a little more about your settings? Are you playing windowed/full screen/windows maximized? Have you enabled DirectX 11? Are there any particular settings in the advanced menu that you have seen that turn this problem on and off?

Does the same with windowed/fullscreen/windowed maximized. With DirectX 11 on. Messed around turning things on and off and found that turning Framerate stabilizer on made everything look how it should. Hope that helps.

    Kirihoshi,
Thank you. That fixed my issue as well.

    Fark,
I am also having the same problem as mentioned before (and that the above change fixed it).

My PC is running the following:
    Video - NVIDIA GeForce GT450
    Driver Version - 285.62 (dated 2011/10/24)
    Windows OS - Windows 7 (ultimate) SP1 64 bit

    Stats in STO

    i noticed

    turning OFF

    "post processing"
    AND/OR
    "screen space ambient occlusion"
    AND/OR
    "cinematic foucs (depth of field)"

makes everything black flicker even worse

    thats noteworthy ...i guess?

framerate stabilizer ON ...confirmed! it fixed the flickering and gets rid of all the black stuff in faces and on buildings completely, but i also see a unacceptable loss of Framerate ....as bad as from 60 to 30

so if that option is supposed to "stabilize" my framerate by bringing it down to a crawl, then i guess it's working as intended ;P .... *NOT going to use THAT*

also setting shadows to LOW gets rid of all the problems, by simply removing all of the shadows;P

i also noticed that ALT+TAB seems to work better since the last tribble patch, now the picture only once shortly flickers black when i change certain graphics options... which is new, it never did that before

I've also noticed a dramatic loss in framerate with framerate stabilizer on. It's still playable but nowhere near as smooth as it is with it turned off.
