Suggestions & Questions on Targetting Controls

Alright, please pardon me if I'm simply making a newbie mistake, but I simply can not figure out how to do something as simple as target an (off-camera) enemy directly behind my ship. I've tried using the 'target nearest hostile' and 'target next enemy' / 'target previous enemy' commands, but with no luck. Is this feature simply missing from the game, or am I just not clever enough to figure out how to do it?

I find it very annoying to have to move my hands off of the flight controls in order to simply target my enemies so I can fire at them, I should be able to do all my targetting via hotkeys, even if I can't see the ship currently on my screen. I should be more worried about how to blow the borg to tiny bits than how to click on that regen probe hiding behind the command ship or rotating my camera to target the Jem'Hadar attack ship on my six o'clock.

On a general note I would love to see a few additional target controls added to STO:
1. Target nearest projectile.
2. Target nearest fighter.
3. Target nearest DD / BB / DN , etc.
4. Target nearest ship attacking self.
5. Target nearest ship attacking ally.
etc.

If you want to see my dream target control setup, take a look at Freespace's control config page. ;) I could always target exactly what I wanted to, when I wanted to target it in that game, whereas in STO managing your aim becomes nearly impossible in a target-rich environment.

Thank you in advance to any dev who takes the time to read this and to anyone who can tell me how to improve my management of the existing target commands. :)
