Q's Winter Wonderland is open and ready for you to explore! Designer Jesse Heinig lets us know about all of the great Holiday Gifts you can earn while you are there in entry #7 of the Season 5 News Dev Blog series.
You can also check out the Holiday Event FAQ here.
I love the Calvin and Hobbes inspired snowmen and the slip slidin' reminds me of slipping around in a former Cryptic game instance! Loved it!
There was a bug with the accolade, could not complete it. The "Klingon Customs" would not complete for me.
Also the race que was really frustrating. It was really challenging to actually get the race started.
1. A few rare gifts will have a Holographic Tribble, which both Federation and Klingon officers can use. The Holographic Tribble creates temporary holographic duplicates of itself when petted, so that everyone on your team can gain a tribble bonus.
2. Some very rare gifts will have a mobile emitter for a Holographic Science Officer, an 8-hour skill point boost, or a booster pack of Duty Officers.
Ok...so where is our chance at getting the playable borg race from the lifers considering you are now giving away a chance at our recruit a friend exclusive gifts.
Once your friend has purchased Star Trek Online, youll receive a brand new title Courier as well as an exclusive Holographic Tribble Pet! Whats more, you both can enjoy:
A special power to instantly travel to your friend (first 30 days).
A 5% Captain and Officer skill point bonus when youre teamed up (first 15 days).
A 5% damage bonus when youre teamed up (first 15 days).
Once your recruit has subscribed to the game for a month, youll earn:
A new title: Recruiter. An exclusive Holographic Bridge Officer (works with Federation and Klingon players).
400 STO-only Cryptic Points.
Definitely appreciate the effort here. I'm still concerned that the Jem Hadar fighter is too powerful. It could easily have been a vanity ship with shuttle like stats, but now we have to worry about its impact on PvP.
I think everyone should also keep in mind that if history has taught us anything it is that anything "rare" or "exclusive" will EVENTUALLY be in the C-store
So let me get this straight ... You can buy the winter package which will give you only *one* of the following at what is a starship price? (ie. You can get screwed as easily as you can win something decent?)
The best thing about presents is that you never know what you're going to get, but it's usually something good!
Buy a Winter Package to give to a friend, or open it yourself to get one of the following tradable items:
Unique Jem'Hadar Attack Ship
Faction-appropriate Duty Officer Pack
Holographic Science Bridge Officer
8-hour XP Boost
Gekli Space Pet
Targ Pup Pet (Klingon Empire characters only)
Exocomp Pet (Starfleet characters only
Eisilum Crystal Horta Ally
Polytrinic Acid Horta Ally

1-hour XP Boost
Blue Winter Package with a space or ground weapon and holiday crafting materials
The Jem'Hadar Attack Ship is a small starship, similar to an Escort or Destroyer. The staple ship of the Dominion fleet, these ships were used with deadly effect during the Dominion War. Small, fast and maneuverable, the Jem'Hadar Attack Ship packs a punch that is larger than expected for a ship of its size.
Recently a handful of these vessels have been found adrift and abandoned in the Alpha Quadrant and both Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force have been scrambling to acquire as many of these derelicts as possible for study. The ships are always found undamaged, but with all systems offline and registering unusually high neutrino signatures. The ships are models commonly seen in the late 24th century, but all appear to be in prime condition.
The Dominion has not expressed any interest in retrieving these ships, and has not responded to subspace messages sent from Qo'noS or Deep Space Nine. For now, the appearance of the Jem'Hadar Attack Ships remains a mystery.
Note: Because the Jem'Hadar Attack Ship is a tradable item, it is unlocked per character and not per account. After unlock, go to the Shipyard on Earth Spacedock, Starbase 39-Sierra, Deep Space 9 or Qo'noS to select this ship.

Its gambling, plain and simple. And if you choose to gamble, then you only have yourself to blame if you are unhappy with the results.
Wow, thank you Cryptic for once again smacking loyal customers in the face. It honestly is no surprise that you would turn around and give the other referral program perks away, it's just a bit shocking you decided to do this now when you already got a good number of loyal customers mad at you already.
And if youve really earned Qs favor, you have a chance to win a special new starship one of the Captured JemHadar Attack Ship that Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force have been finding scattered across the quadrant. This attack ship is a fully-functional unique escort vessel that can be commanded by an admiral. Only a few will be found, and there is no other way to acquire them. Thus, youll never see more than a few of these ships in sector space, and having one is a special experience that not all admirals will experience.
BWAHAHAHAHA!
Oh, this is rich. This just... really, this takes the Denobulan cake!
I hate to sound like a troll, but this is going to be immensely entertaining to watch.
This frankly makes me mad. A money Grab is hardly in keeping with the spirit of the season and that is all this event amounts to a money grab. Thank you cryptic you managed to take a big fat dump on the holiday.
It may not be in keeping with the "spirit" of the Season, but it is definitely in keeping with the fact that Christmas has become a secular holiday and is all about making money for businesses.

Considering that they quote a Rule of Acquisition right there in the article....

Yes... because it's part of a gamble means they are handing it out to everybody.
Yes... because it's part of a gamble means they are handing it out to everybody.
Even at a gamble, it harms the value because it grants an alternate method to grab an item that had to be earned a separate way. It's like a baseball card company making x amount of cards and selling those. They have high value because there is only x; then one day they decide to make more and let potential buyers a 'chance' to get them. The value would most certainly drop and the previous card holders would no doubt be furious.
paying for a *chance* to get the items you want isn't a nice gesture
Just so im clear, can the jem'hadar fighter be earned via the race if we are lucky?
the exact quote is 'Only a few will be found, and there is no other way to acquire them' so I would say that would be a no
The best thing about presents is that you never know what you're going to get, but it's usually something good!
so.... whats this 'usually' statement supposed to mean? thats not a smart thing to say when people are paying money for something.

No, you have cryptic to blame for making something people want only available via gambling
and with this package its becoming blatantly obvious that this game is becoming a typical PWE pay to win game. whats that about asian game companies selling keys to open chests that MIGHT have a reward inside? wait what? we were told this was never happening here....? hmm.....
and on a related note.....
generally when there are holiday rewards in game the company GIVES them to the players, for their loyalty to the game.....operative word being GIVE.
so now we have to pay for what every other game gives out for free

In those instances, card game companies (a great example of this) will generally re-issue the card with slightly different markings, the old "Black border vs White Border" routine. the first run cards will then still remain valuable to a degree as collectibles.
No one would argue that Marvel or DC reprinting Spiderman, Superman or Batman #1 would devalue an actual vintage copy in mint condition.
Back to the earlier question, what happens if a commander or captain gets this drop? is it impossible for them to get it (much the way green weapons drop based on level), or does it unlock and is simply unavailable for use until they hit VA.
My tac Klingon would be a force of nature in this thing, but he's a lowbie, so if I'm power-leveling, I'd rather prepare now...

Said card companies have since gotten rid of White Border cards. (And a good thing too, they were ugly!)
I'm kinda "blah" on grab bags (being a CO player, I've been tired of them for a while). I'm hoping my random number generator luck will be good for a change, because I want those scarfs badly.
As a Calvin and Hobbes fan, I love the snowmen, and once it finally snows enough up here in Yetiland, I think I'm going to try and duplicate some of them. Photos will be taken of course, assuming we actually get a good snowfall one of these days.

My only complaint is...wheres the music =P

is it permanent (ie not going away after the event ends)
and as its a VA/LG ship according to the post yesterday can a lower level character still win it or can it only be won by a max level character?

Red Matter Capacitor, TR-116 rifle???
Please cryptic I want the Rifle!! (Have the Cap)
I love the skating lake and the animations when you lose your footing!
The snowmen are really funny too. You guys have a really good sense of humour.
I like the race idea too.
Well said...very well said...
Can you put it under the Computerrized Christmas tree in my Mess hall??
(Also can you computerrize a Christmas tree in my mess hall?)
