Supposedly it was "decloaked" by a coronal mass ejection... but it's still about 30 times too far away from the sun to have been hit by it.
Anyway, looks like another Mercury double image from HI1. It's caused almost the same hoax about five times.
What the satellite does, it takes two images several hours to a day apart. With who images, they can separate star light and most of the sun itself from the image and get clean data of the mass ejection itself by eliminating any light sources that didn't move between the two images. But the downside is that Mercury and Venus move too fast accross the frame, so instead of the two images cancelling, they're doubled.
Edit: Looks like that's the explanation Daily Tech is giving again.
Except that the explanation is WRONG!
Its a CONSPIRACY, they've killed off every media mogul in the world and replaced them with ANDROIDS reverse engineered from QUATLOOSIAN technology found on the crashed ship that they shipped to AREA 52!
The object is actually a cloaked TAMPFAZAZZOZIAN DEATHNAUGHT coming to INVADE!
well whatever it is I dont think its what this Russ Howard guy said from the previously posted yahoo article ;
"Head NRL group scientist Russ Howard and lead ground systems engineer Nathan Rich say the mysterious object is in fact Mercury itself. And what we're seeing in the footage is the equivalent of Mercury's wake, "where the planet was on the previous day," as it travels through the solar system on its natural gravitational path"
Lamesauce explanation...if you dont know what it is, just say that....not like we as a race know everything that is out out there.
imo if it was what they said, why didnt anyone ever see this before? not like Mercury just formed as a planet last week.

Actually, that has been seen in images from this particular space telscope a lot. There's dozens of public images from STEREO that show double images of Mercury or Venus, and even several that show two images of Comet Elenin that somehow didn't get added to the already huge train of conspiracy theories attached to what's otherwise the least interesting comet to come through the inner solar system in the last decade.
It's actually kind of disappointing the Elenin images haven't created any kind of noise. The image it was discovered on was a composite of nine separate images and appears to show a fleet of objects flying in a formation.. Not a STEREO image, but the same effect, and it's a lot more compelling than the laser pointer conspiracy theorists thought was a UFO following Hale-Bopp.
It works in a similar way to a 3D movie camera, but instead of the lenses being inches apart they're a million kilometers apart and hours out of sync. A 3D movie camera will end up with two unresolvable images of anything too close to the camera, and STEREO will do the same to anything in the inner solar system except the object it's focused on.
NOT TO MENTION if it WAS hit by a CME, it would effectively be toast...or at least all the electronics
Well, if they are using warp travel, not really. Remember, a warp field, um, warps space around the ship. That in and of itself provides a ship a lot of protection.
matter meets antimatter perhaps? Arent we supposed to see a second sun in the end of days?
Not speculation, it was confirmed quite a while ago. If I remember right, it was the first definite natural antimatter observed, and was how they determined what to look for to find antimatter plumes around black hole accretion disks.
But it's not significant amounts. Antimatter isn't that special unless you have a lot of it all at once in a non-vacuum. If you've ever had a PET scan, you've been bombarded by a beam of antimatter which was allowed to annihilate inside your body. If you gathered up the entire antimatter belt around the Earth and dropped it in somebody's lap, they'd probably still be able to have children. Even Jupiter's magnetic field doesn't trap enough antimatter to create a reaction that could be imaged.
Also, and more critically, Mercury doesn't have a magnetic field.

Next week: Large peices of debrie near mercury :O

If I recall correctly, a new earth and new sun are created after the old son and old earth burn away. Which is technically the life cycle of stars.
