Best course of action?

Hi everyone. I haven't been able to play the game now for at least two weeks, because the computer the game is installed on isn't working at the moment. My Dad has tried to work out what the problem is, and to sort it out. He's reassigned the hard drive the game is currently installed on from C to J, so we are using an older spare drive as our main C drive (from what I can understand, we can't get the service pack 3 for windows to install properly, yet it installs fine on the backup/temporary c drive). He's tried to reinstall windows on our old c drive, with no luck, so even though he didn't want to resort to it, he's going to format the c drive, and start from scratch. He is also considering buying a new harddrive (possibly a terabyte drive), but at the moment the prices have gone through the roof, because their area of manufacture has experienced extreme floods, thereby stopping production.

What I'd like to know is, are there any files and/or folders from STO I should copy onto the temporary C drive, so when I reinstall the game, it will save me having to download of a years worth of patches and updates, or would I be better off just reinstalling and downloading all the updates? I know with some games, you can copy across things like previous patches, to save on download and installing times, but I wasn't sure if that was the case with STO.

Thanks :)

just copy the whole game folder on your backupdrive, and when you reinstall the game, copy your backed up files over your new install, and your done. - OOP

Thanks for the advice OOP, I really appreciate it :)

If for some daft reason I haven't got enough space to copy the whole thing (or some files don't copy across), then what files and/or folders should I make sure I copy across?

the two main folders you need to copy are the the /live/piggs folder and if you have screenshots you want to keep , the /live/screenshots folder.

Sorry for the additional post everyone, I didn't want to start a new thread, just for this one question.

Since the harddrive that STO (and other games and programs) were originally installed on keeps overheating and switching itself off, my Dad and I have gone halves on a new motherboard, a new 2TB drive, and Windows 7 (because support for XP will finish soon).

What I want to double check is, does STO work without any problems on Windows 7? I know it says on the back of the box for the game that it's compatible with 7, but I wanted to make sure there weren't any major conflict issues with the game and 7. Plus, because the game was previously installed on a different drive and on a different operating system (windows xp), will I be able to reinstall it (albeit onto a larger harddrive and a new operating system (windows 7) without any hassle? Or will the game refuse to reinstall, because it had been on a different system before?

As suggested by the previous posters, I've saved the folder that I needed to (plus all the other ones, just in case), so I'm assuming that once the game is reinstalled, I just need to move the saved /live/piggs folder to the STO folder, overwriting the original one that came with the game, right?

It has no issues on Win7.
