Thoughts on STO now that I've VA'd and LG'd from scratch

So I'm going to post my various thoughts about the changes of f2p now that I've maxed out both a Fed & Klingon Tactical from scratch.

I'll start with the Klink since I just finished this tonight and it's freshest in my mind.

The thing that ****ed me off the most was when I made LG I was all set to go get a carrier and play with those for the first time and low and behold I can't without spending either 120,000 Dilithium that I have no where near enough (I've got about 20,000ish) for the BG one OR spending 1600 cp to get the Fek'lhri one. I'm a life-time subscriber (paid monthly for over a year b4 switching) with 547 days in game (I took 69 days off once) so that makes me a gold member and seriously at the pinnacle of leveling a Klingon you're not going to give me a new ship??? Even though the reward per level and commendation window says I do get one STILL when I click on my progress bar.

I'd love to test the carriers out (heck, for that matter a few of the lower tier Klingon ships as well) but you won't give me one and they are PROHIBITIVELY overpriced so I won't be testing them. Nice way to shoot yourselves in the foot btw. You want high level Klingon feedback but.....you're like a (anachronistic stereotype forthcoming) "French Maid". "I don't clean windows", "I don't....".

What's even worse is I've got TONS of ship slots I can't afford to fill up. Also, I made a simple mistake purchasing a lower tier ship that wasn't geared for my career track. I bought a Vor'cha (cuz their cool looking and canonical) and when I realized my mistake went to go buy another ship (which on Holodeck is easy with EC) to find out it was 80,000 Dilithium (I had about 10,000 at the time). What makes me sad is what happens when a new player comes along, makes the same mistake and is stuck with a ship for 10 levels. They just might bail on the game.

Which brings me to level advancement. It is ridiculously fast now with cxp counting towards regular game xp. Don't get me wrong I dig the DOFF system. I think it's a great enhancement to the game in general. Yes it needs to be reworked a bit in terms of how long it takes per level (I'm wondering if I'll hit tier 3 in any category other than diplomacy before 1/17/12). However, it provides for some serious power levelling in its current state. On both my Fed and Klingon I advanced FAR faster than the storyline missions granted me access to certain features (Like my RA Fed not being able to get into Gamma Orionis because I was still doing Romulan Missions, yeah ROMULAN SECTOR missions).

Crafting - didn't even bother to try because again with the Dilithium cost this solo player found it semi-pointless while on Holodeck I've got several characters maxed out (for the 3rd time btw, not sure I'll do it a 4th time on the main if it's "reset" yet again).

I did appreciate that I could still buy gear (both ship and crew) for EC still on Granalda Station. Sure it wasn't the best but as fast as I was progressing it didn't need to be, not at all.

I did not do any STF work on f2p because everything I was hearing in the chat channels was that even on minimal difficulty the chances of reward failure were extremely high so I thought what's the point of doing that and getting frustrated on the test server. If new players come in, advance to 51 in a week and then start hitting a wall on STF's and fail constantly what is their incentive to continue to play something that isn't fun? Again it seems like you might be shooting yourselves in the foot here. Sure make the STF's more difficult at the various difficulty levels but when vets are complaining about the changes and failures what are the newbies gonna think?

That's it for now, I'll finish my thoughts on the klinks and start in on my Fed experience later.

It's supposed to be fast. They increased the rate at which we level on Tribble for testing purposes. It'll be a lot slower when F2P goes live.
