    From the article:

"The developers found that players didn't really like paying for content"

I think you'll generally find players have no problem paying for good content. It's bad/lacking/no content they begrudge shelling out for.

"it's possible for players to hit the level cap and get the best gear inside of a single day"

That's a bit of an exaggeration, isn't it? Surely. I'm two years in (off and on) and happily plodding along at Lt. Cmdr.

t's a shame that the video is better then alot of the content in the game right now. I hope that there's some Polish to the Game before F2P that adds more "Remastering" to Eposide missions to improve them.

World of Warcarp and it's bloatedness...

And STO.. is a lone parent.

According to D'Angelo, it's possible for players to hit the level cap and get the best gear inside of a single day.

It's also possible to produce regular content updates.

What does the above quote and my first sentence have in common? Neither one happens often in STO.
The developer has a target price per Dilithium they hope the market hits, but they'll for the most part leave it up to the playerbase to establish prices.

Don't suppose you guys would mind telling us what that price is since you're just going to manipulate the system until it gets there? I mean, why pretend players set the exchange rate?

It's good to know how long I have until F2P hits, though. Now I can plan out all the things I need to do for my characters before F2P takes those options away.

EDIT: The new video is nice, though. Probably because Dilithium isn't in it. ;):D:p

Its not an exaggeration LOL. If you look at players who got so bored but loved star trek so much they stayed around for a long time and kept buying character slots there are a lot of accounts out there that have 10-50 VA/LG's. Is only difference between the factions is that the federation side's content is more from the end of commander to VA. Where as the KDF sides is more of from Lt to Captain. It's all about how you grind each faction out you can casually play a few hours a day and be a VA or LG within a week thats what they are talking about and when you hit that rank you pretty much have enough data samples to craft out the best gear in the game do 3 STF's and you got nothing to do on that character after that.

good video, hope the jem hadar scene is from the upcoming DS9 FE series :)

I'm just worried that with a January date people are going to be too wrapped up in playing SWOTOR for it to be a strong relaunch.

Two things stuck out for me:

    1)

Edit: [snip] I was corrected by another forum member and found I was incorrect in what Dstahl had previously said.

    2) "The developers found that players didn't really like paying for content, so for Star Trek Online Cryptic is taking a very different approach."

With respect, this is an unfortuante conclusion to come to considering many developers successfuly sell DLC in addition to their games. The simple fact is, if it is worth the buy, they will buy the content. If it is not, they will not.

I propose that we bury the term "Content" here once and for all and replace it with a new term that might be more clear: STORYLINE MISSIONS
Players want missions. If it is worth it, they will buy even more missions, if not, they will not.

So January 17 2012 huh? I'm wondering why they're even still locking themselves into a date with all the work that they want to do, that needs to be done and the holidays coming up. At least it's not December and they won't be rushing it out 30 days from now. If the new skill tree takes as much work as the DOFF system, we're in for a long conversion process on that system.

The developers found that players didn't really like paying for content, so for Star Trek Online Cryptic is taking a very different approach.

And that approach is to make people pay for no content.

I mean honestly no new content for half.a.year. And we're going to be talking about this on all the places you broadcast yourselves too, because you've chosen at this point to neglect us who pay you, in choice of those who might. Well, hell hath no fury like a gamer scorned, so lets just 'hope' you get your act together, very soon, or you'll find Cryptic will be more so in the Crypt in six months time.

Dstahl repeatdely along with others always said there was never any plan or intent to make STO F2P. The excuse had been that the plan had changed when PW came along. That raises many questions for me regarding former STO leadership.

I've been closely following the game for quite some time and not a single time do I remember anyone making this statement. The statements basically were about not doing it in the immediate future. It was known that they had considered F2P from the start but decided not to - but wasn't stated that it was due to Atari.

I think one of the reasons it's taken me so long to rank up is because I wanted first to max out diplomacy, which doesn't really give much by way of skill points. Gets you a tonne of data samples though :)

The new intro was nice. I alsoapplaud the decision to Wait until mid-january for the F2P launch. Gives them 2 more months to refine the new systems and to do a fairly comprehensive bug-hunt.

Yeah I just got done watching the video on IGN. That's like sending a picture of a brand new looking ford mustang and then you get to the actual car and its all rusted out on cinder blocks (which is STO compared to that cinematic ROFL). Nice cinematic but a far far far cry from the game LOLS. Also and yea wish the KDF had some content like in the cinematic (we still have our content missions in the old crappy looking qo'nos). Yeah I'm not gonna pay any more waiting around till january for something new to do LOL.

Agreed, the 2yr anniversary would have been more meaningful for the relaunch. The current date seems random - but I don't support changing after announcement.

If you look at it from KDF side at the moment on holodeck we do not have a diplomacy or equivalent but when you are leveling up on KDF side and do the sorties you get so many samples on the way up a lot of times you get so many you end up having to sell them off to get space. Overall I do see what you mean though. Also reminds me I have 2 characters to make in a week to VA and LG so they will be ready when i come back after it goes F2P.

Wow, I am so glad I'm not a paid subscriber right now (though I kind of regret my lifetime sub). F2P was announced in Sept. No content will be released until Jan, 5 months. There was hardly any content before that, Season 4 was in July, and that hardly counts since most of the cool new stuff was held back (DOFF). That brings the content lull to 7 months.

What exactly are people's subscriptions going towards right now? The last year has been a joke for content.

Follow up, LOTRO gave subscribed players a Turbine Point reward for every month they were subscribed between announcement of their F2P conversion and the actual change. Why isn't Cryptic going to do the same thing? Right now everyone's subscriptions aren't paying for any content or additions.

Eh, I'm guessing they don't want the anniversary events to coincide with the post-release break-in time. Kind of annoying if it had time-sensitive rewards but there's server issues.

It'll be a good post-launch party though. And anything shiny in the festivities will garner a bit more press and good screenshots for gaming sites.

Yeah, this I agree with. Would also give even more time to make sure they iron out as many Bugs as they can, polish the misions up even more. And make sure they can bring the Ground skill revamp to the game at the same time as the space revamp. Though from what I've seen of the Space Revamp.. Needs more work IMO..

Please for Pete's sake...Stop beating a dead horse. Yes there has been a lul in content. The developers know this already. They are working hard and there is light at the end of the tunnel. So enough with the lack of content talk already.

Oh dude you do not want to see our exploration side either, the npcs most of the time if yer lucky enough to get a mission to fight npc's they spawn on rooftops you can't fire at them and most of the time its to destroy these tribble domes in space that are on asteroids that look like they are cut in half. For ground missions you usally have to kill a pile of tribbles, flora plants, or borg tech the borg left laying around. On top of that the objects are bugged and cannot be scanned. The only purpose to play them is the feeling of playing in a klingon designed ship LOL. That and if you like using cloaking devices as much as I do or lauching a gazillion pets at a target.

The process of making Star Trek Online subscription-free is a little more interesting than what we've seen in the past. It's due to STO's level of difficulty. Simply put, it's not very hard at all. According to D'Angelo, it's possible for players to hit the level cap and get the best gear inside of a single day. The end result is that totally sweet loot doesn't feel as totally sweet as it should. "A lot of the things people acquired weren't worth very much to them," D'Angelo says. So the plan leading up to the switch to free-to-play is to make the high-end stuff more difficult to acquire, and the low-end stuff simpler. Put simply, "[We're] revisiting the game's economy."

While I'm in general agreement here, I would certainly like to be able to play this game without having to hire Goldman Sachs and watch "how-to" videos on insider trading.

I think (well, more like I hope) that they will be moving new content from Tribble to Holodeck piecemeal as it becomes ready. They are already doing it with the ships. When you think about it, this makes sense, because you do not want to move the entire shebang the night before your F2P launch. You want to move it a piece at a time, make sure everything works, and have everything in place at least a few weeks ahead of time in case there are some bugs that need to be worked out. Then, when F2P hits, you just update the website to allow silver players to make new accounts.

Of course, I could be way off here. Maybe we will see bupkis on Holodeck until the middle of January. :(

It was a nice demo video at least. :)
