I caught the gist that originally it was more of an artifact of the new mission interface, and not an intended path lock in, but with the way things are laid out now it's really easy to 1) become stuck if you hit something that's broken, or just hit something you can't wrap your head around, 2) become bored, 3) climb a nearby clock tower and go on a rampage because you are a vice admiral and you have to do fire caves AGAIN before you get to the juicy borg content center of the game.
At the current rate of xp gain I don't see anyone reaching the transwarp conduit before they reach Vice Admiral unless they ignore dilithium gathering (which silver's cannot do) and the duty officer system all together.
Also, it kinda burns a bit because the gear the missions drop gets more and more useless as you level, because you're outleveling the missions so much.
Also, I miss being able to pick and choose the featured episodes. Doing things the way you are doing them makes the game more linear. And Sisko could tell you, being Linear ain't the greatest thing in the world, ya know?
I've complained about this as well. The other problem seems to be that a lot of the required levels for missions have been revised upward, which only makes the problem worse. You basically have to use the doff system if you want to keep up with the missions. It's kind of a mess.
My character is RA4, and I'm still not out of the Cardassian sector episodes.
