Star Trek Online HORDE mode.

Greetings,

Last night my brother, some friends, and I were playing a little title that some of you might know.

Even if you are not a fan of it's style of game, or don't own an Xbox360 I'm sure that some of you have heard of the franchise Gears of War.

Well, they are amazingly fun games that can give hours of fun. It really started with the 2nd entry into the series which introduced a mode called "Horde". In this mode, basically you would team up with a group of players and fight increasingly difficult waves of enemies coming at you. And with each wave it would introduce harder enemies that you fight throughout the game. It could be played on different maps and honest to god many people didn't stop playing it until Gears of War 3 (Which recently came out less than 2 months ago) refined the mode even more and made it even better.

Basically in Gears of War 3, it still has the same basic principal as Gears2, except it added a lot more depth with A) Tower Defense like things you could do to help aid against the oncoming "horde". Plus at every 10th round. So.. Round 10, 20, 30, etc. up to 50. You would fight a Boss along with the rest of horde coming at you. These were usually things from the series, like the Huge Brumak, or Beserkers etc. like that. Basically some of the bosses you would fight throughout the game. After each 10 rounds the next 10 would become increasingly difficult. The enemies would have multipliers that increase dmg/health etc.

Now the point im trying to make is.. suddenly my brother and I.... Both STO players suddenly thought.. WOW.. Why on Earth doesn't Star Trek Online have something like this?

The game is already built on an "Instance" mission system. It's already built on 5 player party system. It would perfect sense in the Star Trek Universe too. 5 Players team up against an oncoming horde of Klingon ships. How long can they hold out? Can they make it through all the oncoming waves as the difficulty and enemies keep scaling upward? Will they be able to handle the Boss ships at each 10th wave? The super powered "named" special mob Negvhar? Or carrier? Or something new??? Same with the Klingons... can they withstand the incoming Federation fleet trying to fight over key ares along the neutral zone border?? New maps and scenarioes could be added too.. There could be a "horde" mode against the Romulans.. Againsts, the True Way, Against the Breen... Against Borg.. etc, and any future factions to come.

There could be leaderboards.. and tracking showing rounds completed.. time it took to complete the whole 50 wave event. Kill boards.. death toll.. Etc. for each player. There could be rewards based on how you do... XP could be given. There can be Horde modes for each ranking Gap in the game.. Lt. Cmdr... Cmdr. Cap.. RA.. VA.. and beyond. ANNDDD just like Gears of War, which lets you select the map and difficulty... Star Trek Online already has a difficulty slider in it. You could play it on the harder skill levels and the rewards could scale accordingly.

This makes perfect sense and it really bridges gameplay types. There are PvP players and PvE players. I've come to find that in Gears of War.. both types of Players love horde mode. The players who don't like head to head challenge with other players.. and the PvPers who just like to blow stuff up.

Cryptic Studios I'm asking that you should seriously consider a Horde mode and implement it into Star Trek Online. You have the perfect engine, and tech capable of doing this. You also need ot have mulitple different horde maps.. Like one with a ton of asteroids to dodge.. Nebulas placed throughout.. or Even Briar Patch like areas that make the Map and the hordes an equal as far as survivablility.

I'm telling you this would be a HUGE hit for the game and the community. People love the Space Combat in STO. It is clearly it's strongest point. Eventually, with the rollout of ground skill changes.. and hopefully ground combat becoming more balanced and fun.. you can eventually put in "horde" ground maps just like Space maps. It truly makes people work together, and stand together and fight.

Put a little backstory to some of the Horde Missions.. (You also don' thave to calli it "horde" mode) Halo eventually copied it and called it "firefight". The point is.. It would fit so perfectly into this game it's not even funny. That along with eventually competivie PvP scenarios like your upcoming "King of the HIll" pvp scenario and you could seriously make this game Rock.

Thanks all

We don't have many details yet for the ground portion of the Borg Invasion event, but I wouldnt be surprised if it was similar to this. Would be fun, sort of like when our fleet did a breaking the planet run to kill hordes of klingons at the release of season 4.

    Awesome.

I'm just so surprised this mode hasn't been really put on the idea front yet.. (maybe it has and we just don't know).

This is the most Perfect MMO to put this in. Horde mode honestly is what sold a lot of copies of Gears of War2/3. It's an awesome game beyond that but Horde keeps people coming back for more. Plus they just released a big updatefor it with new maps, gear, etc.

Seriously I would love for this thread to keep going to see if Cryptic can get a good look at it.

Couldn't someone build something like this in the foundary? Maybe include missions every few waves that need to be completed while slaughtering enemies?

Would be a fun passtime for fleets looking for something a little different in game in my opinion.

May get mistaken for a mission designed to collect accolades however...
