The latest patch notes seem to suggest there are plans for an upcoming ground tree revamp to match the space tree revamp.
I cannot emphasize how much I really DO enjoy melee combat. I recognize it's not everyone's favorite playstyle but I also don't see it as a purely tactical officer playstyle when the shows had EVERYONE dishing out melee attacks.
That said, not everyone dished out the same KIND of melee attacks and I think there's a template we get on the shows:
Tactical - Lunges, leaps, chokes (Kirk, Worf, Riker)
Science - Judo chops, stomach jabs, elbows jabs (Spock, McCoy, Bashir)
Engineering - Haymakers, face jabs, knee attacks (Scotty/O'Brien)
I would like to see each class given its own form of melee and its own skill to boost melee as a damage type.
Maybe the way to do this is to create universal melee kits or Engineering and Science versions of the melee tactical kits.
I'd like to see a skill for all classes that passively boosts melee somehow although maybe not a straight damage increase. The way I see it, sci melee would probably get a stun proc and engineering melee would get a knockdown proc, whereas tacs might retain their damage proficiency.
I know melee weapon damage is down relative to ranged weapons anymore. One idea I have is that maybe it should be kept down but speccing into your profession's version could bring it up relative to your level. That would match how some folks simply weren't hand-to-hand specialists and some folks were; it was never a class specialty though, exactly.
Finally, I'd suggest making it more dangerous to use ranged weapons at close proximity by having it so that the user takes slight radiation damage when firing at a target that's too close, making it so that distance relative to combat style and knockbacks matter more. (As a counter to this, I'd also suggest making knockbacks a bit easier again.)
